Watched a KZbin video by NaShan Clay recently on how much damage the no crying rule does to young people. When you aren't allowed to vent your feelings through tears, you vent them through anger. And when you aren't allowed to show or cope with emotions, but have to bottle them up inside up, they build up over time instead of healing.

At the age of 17 had a similar experience. Got beaten up and robbed on the way home. When I got to my corner, my guys were there hanging out. I told them what happened, couldn't hide it. I looked jacked. Well no one said anything or made any plans. All eight of us started walking towards where it happened. Most had knives. No guns in 70s. We walked about 12 blocks Iooking for them. By the 12th block my mind kicked in. What if we go to jail for this? A show called scared straight had aired. Not right or wrong, but fear of prison life stopped me. I told the guys, let's go home. Two guys robbed me. Years later I saw a picture of one of them in the NY daily news. He had become a famous boxer. It looked just like one of the guys. Not 100 percent sure though. Maybe 75 that it was him. Mike was lucky we didn't find him. And so was I.

I LOVE this novel. I think it's one of the best books for young people published in the last few years. Reynolds's verse is powerful, both the words and the way he lays those words out on the page. The audiobook, read by the author, captures Will's raw grief, and I had to pause it many times just to absorb the words and story. The graphic novel's watercolor illustrations bleed across the page like blood and transform the narrative. Every version of this novel is a work of art. Thanks for covering it.

Narratively, this seems to have a lot in common with the film City of God - unsurprisingly, given it's a similar group of children in a similarly bleak part of a city. It's also interesting to compare the particular rhythm and chopping-up of expected paragraphs to the high-energy, highly-mobile chopped-up editing.
