Let's be real. This argument of spanking kids is honestly dependant. Dependant on the parents and kids. I say this because whooping your child can be traumatizing or detrimental depending on what you use. My auntie used to beat her kids with extension cords and brooms. Now my oldest cousin is in jail for kidnapping and murder. My mom used to thump as as toddlers and as we got older, the item of use changed. From child flip flops between ages 5-8, and belts as we got older. At 17, she started using her hands. Like, she used to smack me. I never saw it as abuse because, 1 I could take it and she knew that, and 2 it was always my fault anyway. And it wasn't anything overboard. A quick slap to the face or smack on the back of the head.

I will seriously speak on the matter of spanking as someone who took a psychology course in college that required me to do a lot of academic research into the topic, i'm not an expert but i've had to read a lot of expert opinions and research on the matter. Spanking isn't as effective as a lot of supporters for it think it is, and its not because of spanking itself, but because of the way humans tend to respond to punishment in general. There's a lot of ways to influence behavior, two big ones is Reinforcement and Punishment. Reinforcement is things done to encourage positive behavior while punishment is things done to discourage negative behavior. Reinforcement is far more effective in influencing kid behavior then punishment overall, the reason being that kids can tend towards focusing more on the punishment itself than the reason for the punishment so they will prioritize avoiding or minimizing the punishment over correcting the behavior that got them in trouble in the first place. Punishment also requires to be done *as soon as possible* after the negative behavior for it to have a meaningful effect otherwise, while the kid may be told and clarified as to why the punishment is happening that still won't make the connection between the punishment and the behavior imprint onto the kids mind properly. Spanking specifically also has its own unique problems such as the fact that theres only so harsh it can get before it is actual abuse so if you become accustomed to spanking a child for say having a disrespectful tone, then punishing much more severe problems, if they come up, becomes incredibly difficult not to accidentally cross a line. And theres the problem of kids you can't spank and yes that is a thing, some kids if born with some condition or different type of thinking such as someone born on the spectrum, spanking will do exactly no good in correcting behavior because the kid most likely can not connect the punishment to the negative behavior yet, i'm autistic and i didn't fully understand why i got punished so much when i was younger at all until i was about 16 and had fully developed the ability to manually connect it in my head. And just generally with punishment, even in ideal circumstances, it just isn't as effective as reinforcement for some reason, its just something innate in humans that responds better to reinforcement. More specifically, the reinforcement technique that seems to work the best is removing things that the kid does not like as a reward for good behavior, such as giving them a break on whatever chores are assigned to them, but theres a ton of other ways. The thing about reinforcement is that it takes understanding your kid, which is important anyway, but i think thats why it isn't actively used that often by so many because for it to work well you need to really understand what things would truly be a reward for your kid but something like spanking, and punishment in general, is more intuitive to many people and thus swear by it even though the VAST majority of parents who adopt a minimal punishment but high reinforcement style of parenting tend to have significantly better behaved kids and those kids tend to suffer from significantly less mental stresses and issues then those that grew up in high, or even mid, punishment households, the defense of spanking of "well i was spanked and i turned out okay!" says next to nothing about spanking itself and more about how theres a million aspects to parenting that could have a positive enough impact to balance out the negative effects of spanking and about how people tend to misunderstand the effects their own childhood actually had on them, not to assume theres any "trauma" or anything like that, its just that whatever negative effects it did have are hard to understand especially when you're trying to look at yourself unbiased to understand those effects

Spanking isn't an action that is often taken for benign reasons. It's taken when the child is doing something truly bad. For example in the case of this video touching something extremely dangerous multiple times after multiple warnings. Or in the case of something from my childhood when I threw a glass cup against the wall during a tantrum. Those actions deserve the Spanking since they are severe actions. What you're father did wasn't so much discipline but teaching you a lesson.

A good method to use is one I use on my nephews that are 3 and 4. 1. Use a stern look. You know, that one your mom or dad would give you. 2. One or two verbal warnings depending on how you feel. 3. A time out. I make them stand in the corner for a few minutes. 4. If those don't work, them I'm bout to thump them hands. Now my nephews, just like all the other kids in my family(including me when I was one), are bad as fuck so they'll cry for a bit then find something else to do that they ain't supposed to.

Okay there's a difference between abuse and discipline, not saying beat your child, but a good spanking here and there isn't bad, where parents go wrong is when they spank their child and don't explain, with discipline, should come explanation, too show why they had that consequence, it'll help them understand with actions can come consequences. Also parents fail that when they hit their child but are hypocrites, it can damage that child as well so if you set rules for your children the rules should also apply to you, y'all may say ohh but we grown and they not, well you have to understand, your a blueprint that the child follows sooo. Don't tell them "do as I say not what I do" but "learn from watching me" and make footprints for your kids to walk in, it may not be perfect but they'll see that and chances are higher for them being better

Depends the severity of the situation cause if a kid started hitting their mother for example that shit is getting resolved real quick. If it's a fight with a sibling for example warnings will go out then if it continues actions will be taken depending on the situation of said fight. If that fails then discipline to the offender is taken. Etc etc. No solution is ever the same its always dependent on what is actually happening. The punishment should fit the crime after all

My parents never had a reason to use the belt, thankfully. My little ass learned quick. Hands, fly swats, and switches hurt like hell. I didn't even want to IMAGINE what three feet of leather would feel like. All my dad had to do was say "You want me to go get my belt?" And that was it. Like "Alright, shit, it ain't that important." What made it worse is afterwards, my dad would get emotional and hit me with "You know I love you, right son? I don't want to be mean like that." That shit hurt more than the whoppin because then I felt bad for making my dad sad. But overall, I'm glad it happened. It was always after being told several times to stop, and it taught me I couldn't just get away with doing whatever I wanted. When somebody asks you to stop doing something, you stop doing it. Actions have consequences. Simple lesson that has kept me out of a whole lot of shit in my adult life.

It really depends on the child. Some might grasp the reasoning behind your guidance and adhere to rules effortlessly, in which case, corporal punishment is absolutely unnecessary. While others may require firmer boundaries, where even corporal punishment becomes a necessary tool to break through their stubbornness. Generally, it's preferable to set these boundaries yourself rather than leaving it to society or law enforcement to lay them out in your stead. Punishing a child is never pleasant, but at times, it's crucial for their development.

You should definitely start with one or two verbal warnings (personally I would only give one), and if they still won't listen, then you spank them. Now, because the point of a spanking is to make it hurt so they never do it again, it should be only one good hit and that's it. From then on, the kids are more likely to heed the verbal warnings, so you won't have to do it every time they're in trouble.

Physical punishment will be dealt to a child. Either while they're growing up to teach them right from wrong, or when they're an adult... To teach them right from wrong. Not necessarily spanking. Physical restraint like a pin until they calm down and listen. Regardless, it is the parent's role to develop their children into functioning human beings. The government, schools, and social groups won't raise a kid for you. And they shouldn't be expected to. The number of young adults I've helped with mental health problems due to a lack of proper authority that they respect in their lives is honestly heart-rending. I met a kid once, 15 years old, who thought that showing respect was oppression. Not like a peasant to a king kind of respect, I mean peer to peer respect. Any level of basic value for another sentient being was, to him, oppression. Because of the extremely passive and peaceful environment that he was raised and coddled within. There are some wild ways the human mind can develop when raised differently.

Seriously? This is interesting to me can you tell me more about this or are you not allowed to because of some weird rule somewhere
@silverpact1008
@silverpact1008 2 жыл бұрын
@@phantom_blade555 I can absolutely share more. This particular individual was raised in a very new-age household, no physical punishments, no direct conflict between parents and child, etc. The parents were very soft on them, and they grew up spoiled and arrogant. Then, at one point, a non-parental male family member in their life enacted sexual violence upon them. This lead to them needing help and support, but because they were not raised to respect their parents, they also didn't believe their parents could help them. This, they internalized the trauma, and bottled it up. This heavily affected their development as a young teen transitioning into young adulthood. Their parents continued to treat them the same way, and by the time I met them when they were 18, their lack of respect for their parents, and lack of emotional stability due to not having an authority figure in their life, had led to a belief that treating any human being with a basic sense of decency or cordiality was a form of oppression upon them, an affront to their own freedom. It took me months of working with them for them to slowly realize how this happened, and why it would be destructive if they continued that way for the rest of their lives. In the end, he ended up sitting his parents down and having a very long, and heart-breaking conversation with them. The biggest problem with passive parenting, or new age parenting, or whatever one may want to call it, is a lack of trust and respect between parent and child. If all a parent does is talk down to their child, and always try to reason with them, then the child will grow up without someone they have to listen to. The reason people follow laws is because there's a very definite punishment that is very bad if they don't. Obviously, not everyone would run around in total anarchy if death or incarceration weren't on the table. But a lot more murder and theft would occur if the only consequence was a stern talking to, and being told to not use electronics for a few hours. It's very possible to raise well-adjusted children without inflicting pain and violence upon them. Just, not for every parent. It requires and understanding of hierarchy, and social consequences. There's a massive difference between talking to your child because they did something 'bad', and discussing your child's actions like they're an adult. The general psychological theory behind non-violent parenting is raising more well-adjusted children with less proclivity towards physical altercation. But to do this, one has to understand how it all works. Be able to provide a sense of safety and trust, as well as develop a position of authority and respect. It is, by no stretch of the imagination, a style of parenting that a majority of the current world's population can possibly hope to pull off with positive results. As we have seen in the past couple generations. More and more parents are trying to use this type of parenting, and the new generations are finding themselves less and less capable of handling the world at large as they reach adulthood.

You should always start with a firm talking to and, more importantly, explaining why what the kid is doing is wrong rather than just yell at them. Spanking is only a last resort if that didn't work. In my opinion, of course.

People really say spanking is worse then grounding or taking something away and I firmly disagree. Spanking lasts a few second maybe a few minutes at most. Taking something they like away or grounding them leaves some long term mental stress. This is from my experience atleast

I am okay with kids being spanked, i myself couldn’t but that is more so because when i was beat i was beat for no reason and was abused and i have trauma from my childhood so i myself could never do it because of that trauma, but as long as you do it right and not abuse your child i’m okay with it, i just can’t so it myself

I feel like you should always talk it out before resorting to beating your kid. Try to be a friend to your child. Tell them about the rights and wrongs. But if that don’t work you are still their parent before their friend. So they are going to catch these hands.

Proverbs 13:24 He who spares his rod hates his son, But he who loves him disciplines him promptly. Keywords "promptly" , "discipline", not abusive. ♥️ And yes also pray for them but that does not mean you spare the rod, all that comes together. Obey God He knows it all ♥️ there's always hope in the Lord through Jesus Christ.

This was a good explanation of the child discipline issue. When I was a kid yeah I got my ass beat for dumb shit-belt, hand, shoe, extention cord, tools that were used UNTIL mom realized they don't work as well as taking away my allowance or privileges. I think it's about finding what works best for the child. Sometimes verbal is best, sometimes the belt. No two kids should be disciplined the same way, but this is my opinion and I dont have kids so yeah....

As a kid i feel i didnt get any ass whooping from a family member i didnt deserve lmao. Maybe sometimes i could have gotten a bit more warning before getting jumped on, but its not like i got beat for no reason. But i understand both sides, always resorting to physical correction can be traumatic for kids. Personally With my kids i go with command, correction, warning, and then action.

If you come from an old school black family, you got beatins growing up if you was a bad child. At some point if it didnt go through your head that maybe if i act right, i wont get get in trouble; then Idk you are just not someone who comprehends common sense. Our parents did it for a reason if you didnt learn then you need to look yourself in the mirror and ask yourself, what really changed

Personally I believe that beating your child should come last but is necessary if reasoning with them didn’t work. Also I understand what scru thinks but if you leave an argument with an adult alone then they ain’t gonna change their mind but can agree to disagree and she same would happen with a child leaving whatever you disagreed about them doing unresolved

Just to be another expert in the comments I think it really comes down to how quickly you turn to "discipline" if a parents just smacks you immediately for anything, that's some abusive shit but if you just being a defiant ass kid and the genuine things a parent is doing isn't solving the problem I get it, just like you said with the police or really anyone

My philosophy is that you should be able to discipline your kids however you want (Within reason and the law) but it's important for them to understand WHY they're being punished. My dad spanked me and my brothers when we were young, but before he would always sit us down and talk to us like we were human beings, lay out what we did wrong, why it was wrong, and how he's not doing it out of hate or anything, just discipline. And when we got older, he wouldn't need to spank us at all, we'd just talk through what we'd done, because he'd lain the groundwork at a young age to work through problems like adults.

The way I look at it? Start with a verbal discipline, let them know why they shouldn't do what they're doing. If that doesn't work? Tell them a bit more sternly, a command as opposed to a reasoning. Still no? Reinforce the words with punishment. Still doin it? Back that up with a spank.
