The longest 4th down conversion I ever saw live was in a high school football playoff game. One team trailing by less than a TD with time running out and facing a 4th-&-26. They either convert or lose the game. Their QB heaves a pass into a crowd about 30 yards downfield. The pass deflects off a player high into the air to a wide-open receiver. The receiver catches the ball and runs it another 50 yards or so for the go-ahead TD. The other team is so stunned by the play they can't muster an answer in the 30 or so seconds they have left and end up on the losing end of a game they thought they had won.

The Vikings version of the Nate Poole call is my favorite NFL call ever. The raw pain in the announcer's voice is so heartbreaking. Minnesota started 6-0 but still needed to beat ARI just to make the playoffs. If ARI lost, they get the #1 pick. The Cardinals fans (all 27 of them) were screaming for a win over the #1 the whole week. One of the greatest choke jobs in NFL history, and it happened at the hands of the Arizona Cardinals. Double whammy. If this game was played in Minnesota, Vikings fans would have burned down the Metrodome.

@@timlett99 the rules before 2008 didn’t require him to. ”If a wide receiver would land inbounds with both feet but was pushed out by a defender before that happened, the pass would be ruled complete.” I’m pretty happy they changed the rule because the last thing we need is more subjectivity surrounding what would’ve happened or where somebody would’ve landed had they not been pushed out, etc. The downside now is that defenders have more ability to interrupt that process without negative consequences.

@@thenumberquelve158 He was a guy who was inconsistent, but he had some good throws. In those days a 60% percentage passer wasn't the average necessarily and at his at 56% or so, you had to really dive into the film to see if it was just unlucky/inaccuracies or just plain inconsistency. Think a guy like Cam Newton for instance in our era. Pretty overall fine passer, but he had certain throws he just couldn't figure out. And occasionally, just missed the over the middle easy throw, hence why they went towards taller players for a time at TE/WR. But he did establish growth as a passer, especially in his deeper dropbacks in his NFL MVP season, trusting his protection. But with Hoying, he didn't grow with that offense. Those inconsistent throws remained, and once teams got film on him, the defenses bunkered down on routes to force him into those throws. Which hurt his confidence. The Eagles at that time also had a terrible offensive line. 64 sacks as a team (Hoying averaged 4 sacks a game his first real year, if we include all 7 appearances). 56 sacks the next year given up, 35 on hoying in 8 games 7 starts. That's a similar average. Dude got beaten up mentally and physically. Once you get that low as a young passer, all bets are off...

I remember that show. Was unceremoniously ended in 2019. The QB Teases episode is one of the better episodes of the later seasons of it.

@@fortynights1513 I think the deathkneel was turning from the analysts, writers for papers/leagues and radio heads at the time and focusing on weird obscure comedians to fill for time. I know that is a significant complaint amidst the community that rewatches those. Me personally, some of those people were so...off it felt like the show people behind the scenes must've known them and was trying to get them work/publicity. Which isn't the point of the program and for me, having a section where the Beast Mode earthquake moment leads into a "joke" that refers to a dudes homosexual-focused sexual act just...cringe. That's one example but its an example for those who haven't seen the show of maybe why its unfortunately gone. Honestly the older shows cringiest episode is the ageless wonders. That episode is not great and its a shame since the topic is so cool and the selections are neat.

@@Gungho73I remember those comics in the later years. One or two jokes were ok (and should out to Costaki Economopolus for talking about football when he was on despite being a comic), but they did that too often, and a lot of the jokes felt out of place. In my opinion most of the best episodes had aired by 2013-14. Most of the lists they made after that were reasonably logical to argue (at least at the time they aired), but weren’t presented in a very engaging manner. My favorite episode of the series hands down would have to be One Shot Wonders from 2007 because you could have made any of the top handful number one and I wouldn’t argue with it, and I like the note they ended it on. The program had ran its course in general don’t get me wrong, but I still think it sucks that after 11 years or so worth of content, the last episode doesn’t acknowledge that it’s the last episode. A few lists I would have been intrigued to hear their thoughts about that they never made an episode on: 1. Top 10 Coaches of all time 2. Top 10 Offensive Lines 3. Top 10 Defensive Lines 4. Top 10 Combine Performances 5. Top 10 One and Done Teams If I was making the last season, I would have made episodes on those topics, and one last final episode that would be a round table look and re-evaluation of all the lists and all the episodes. But that’s just me.

People looking at the AZ Poole catch against the Vikings where he had just 1 foot in and wondering why that was called a TD. First, I do not believe they had instant replay in that time, second, according to the catch rules at that time, you dont need both feet in. If you catch the ball, have possession of it and then get knocked out of bounds and the refs believe you could of caught it inbounds, but were knocked out or pushed out of bounds, it is considered a catch. Yeah, dumb rule and that is why they got rid of it. The exact wording is "If a player, who is in possession of the ball, is held up and carried out of bounds by an opponent before both feet or any part of his body other than his hands touches the ground inbounds, it is a completed or intercepted pass."

You’d think there would be a lot more 4th and 20 plays throughout NFL History. Crazy. Edit: ok this is only 1991-Current that makes sense I was gonna say there’ has be more than just this when you take into account how many NFL games have been played since the league began

Pro football reference’s play index for NFL play by play only goes back to 1994. I remember coming across a message board post that mentioned a 4th and at least 40 in the early 70’s.

I grew up in San Diego. I was still pretty young, and had only been interested in football for a few years, but honestly after that 4th & 29 play, I should have known just from that. Never have hope for the Chargers. (I finally ragequit them in 2016 when they became the only team to lose to the Browns in two years.) [It's amazing the Chargers are on the GOOD side of this list MORE THAN ONCE. I've never even HEARD of the quarterback at 0:38!]
