@matrix3509 Like I keep ruminating over the implications of it... I'll be staring off into space, trying to picture an approximation of Bethesda's org charts or internal workflow systems, roadmaps, timelines, anything... but all I see in my mind's eye is an etch-a-sketch of eldritch glyphs and spaghetti code. Tinnitus ear-ringing distracts from the images for long enough for the realization to dawn that I've been holding my breath for several seconds. I gasp; wait for my senses to normalize. I close my eyes to reset. Briefly, my thoughts flicker to Todd. The lifeblood of an empire and its single point of failure. The father of non-lies. The alpha and omega production bottleneck. "It just works," he says. I scream.

@@logancade342 LMAO, but yes. Literally the entire structure of BGS rests on Todd's shoulders, and suddenly it makes much more sense in all those developer interviews when every Bethesda employee mentions how Todd doesn't have time for anything anymore. @bubbasbigblast856310 ай бұрын
In fairness, yeah, Bethesda is right when they say that straightforward fuel isn't fun, but it was still a failure of imagination: they could have just done something like pair the artifact to the ship (or rather, a moveable reactor in the ship,) and player both, and make the limiting factor in power use to be fuel instead of time. And bam, there, the player now has a reason to care about fuel, and outposts have a reason to exist.

The reason I think Bethesda keeps talking about mods is that at some point Todd Howard talked to Gabe Newell (or watched one of those interviews or talks that Gabe gave that are still floating around on KZbin) and Gabe told Todd that Valve has all the money in the world and its because they realized they could monetize modders. So Todd wants to repeat that success story, because that is what Valve did. Steam was originally for Valve games and some successful mods that got turned into games of their own (the most promising ones being bought out and released by Valve itself), and both Valve and Bethesda's bread and butter (or used to be in Valve's case) is action RPGs. But what he doesn't understand is what makes people want to mod a game. Because Half-Life was exquisitely crafted with a great story and combat, but also had an innovative engines that could do things nobody else was offering and a suite of assets that were as good or better than just about any other game up to that point. Of course people would want to make their dreams come true using cutting-edge technology which suddenly made it possible. Starfield, on the other hand, is space game #5. The engine isn't particularly easy to work with, it doesn't allow for anything unique, there isn't much of a story to expand, or novel game mechanics to explore or tweak. That's just my theory, though, and I don't have any evidence if that's what Todd Howard has in his head somewhere. Would be pretty cool if there was a quote or two though.

First up, Private Sessions I'm glad to hear you're on the mend dude. Keep at it! On the meat of the podcast: One of the low key fascinating things about the Starfield debacle, in a meta sense for the industry, is how it's kind of laid bare a lot of the "this is how things are supposed to work" nonsense. With hype and reception, I mean. A lot of KZbinrs don't understand they are cheap labor for PR, and up until now they've generally relied on AAA releases being safe bets. Their careers are not built on analytical thought, but just being first out the gate, or just being positive-PR shills. And going past the independent PR channels, the awards / accolades aspect of Starfield getting snubbed is so goddamn funny. It had the advantage of its release date essentially making it the "Oscar bait" of video game awards ceremonies, and it didn't pan out.

It's telling, because Cyberpunk at launch, I wanted to keep playing despite the bugs, and I played it four times up until the 2.0 update. While Starfield...I just can't be bothered. Don't even care about the bugs because the game isn't worth fretting about. Anyways, really enjoyed this podcast. Keep it up.

As to twitch dying: I used to watch LPs, then streams, I used to even watch the concentrated autism of GDQ. Now I don't watch anything of the sort. It isn't just the oversaturation, its the focus and content of them. Old LPs used to be like sitting on a couch with a friend who was playing a game. I can't even pinpoint how they are different, but it feels like "content". It seems less they are playing the games for fun or curiosity, but because they've got a checklist.

Ironically I mostly learned about Outer Worlds from your Video. I just mostly saw it as the game the I always confuse with Outer Wilds but then realise it's the boring one and click off it. And I just absolutely love both of yours long form content as background entertainment it's so clear, well structured, and easy on the ear.

It’s so wonderful to hear people discuss the abysmal travesty of starfield.

@PatricianTV @ 2:31:19 "They picked up ID software and Doom died with Eternal." Huh, I would like to know about Pat thoughts on Doom Eternal, either in a video or a comment. It's simply an interesting take about Doom Eternal (and not uncommon one) for what I've seen elsewhere. You know, beside the Doom Eternal fan pages and what not. Nice podcast too, thanks.

That pinged for me too- Doom Eternal, fantastic game but it bounced HARD off every fps player in my social circle besides myself. I say this as a person who recently went back and did Doom -> Doom 2 - > TNT/Plutonia, because I wanted to reminisce, but I don't really see myself revisiting Doom Eternal ever, and story-content DLC in a shooter like that is just pure poison. I don't have a coherent critical view of it really but it feels like there's an autopsy to be done here

That's why I said it's not a uncommon opinion to not like the dlcs or the game on the whole. If I had a complete critique of the game, a part of it would be the massive lack of replayability and the one dimensional gameplay and design. Where everything and everyone has route their gameplay into heavy farming tactics (High Chainsaw, Flame belch, glory kill, etc) for the devs idea of "Resource Management." Then, the death of half the weapon mods in the game, where like two-three of the "off Meta" mods had anything interesting about them. The meta mods are still just as crazy as they were in doom2016. I still only really like playing Ultrakill these days, because it's more about freeform stylish combat and not this baby easy "Difficult and challenging game design" and boring "Resource Management", where I can break the game with just crazy farming shit and only using on meta weapon mods.

You guys should look into Andrew Panton from the FuckFace podcast. He 100% surveyed all 1700 planets in Starfield before even meeting most of the main cast. He just got his ship, did the first main quest, then dipped.
