Thank you for watching! What part of the world are you from? Longhorns are amazing creatures. I was originally drawn to longhorns because I had always heard they required less maintenance and were hardy. I, at that time, was inexperienced and didn’t want fickle animals that had difficulty calving and so forth. We have been raising them for years now and my love for them has only grown. Longhorns have a special innate hardiness. They ran feral for 400 years in south and southwestern United States. They developed disease resistance, drought tolerance, and a wider palate than most other breeds. They have small babies which makes calving much less stressful. My favorite thing about them though is the unique colorations. The big twisty horn is great but I love flashy longhorns with wild color patterns. We are meat eaters but health conscience as well. We raise our beef to be grass fed and grass finished. A Texas A&M study from years ago put grass fed longhorn nutrition on the same plane as wild venison and bison. We can be found on Instagram and Facebook @murrayfarmandranch or our personal website is murraylonghornranch.com. Those resources have a lot of additional resources. I also would be happy to speak with you directly through email, text, or phone conversation. Thanks you for reaching out to us!

@@murrayfarmranch8447 I’m in Tuscaloosa AL & my wife and I bought an piece of an cattle ranch which is in the Black Belt Praire land and I’m thinking of Long Horns. My brother raises Black Angus for the meat. But he does grass fed only. Most raise Angus around here but there is an undeniable appeal to the Longhorns and their story is pure Americana. When I search Longhorn farms your is the first to pop up so that was a treat. Your passion is evident. I’ll keep studying for now. I’m not on social media since the censorship began. Thanks for responding and God bless.

Cattle in general are a great past time! Breeding longhorns is different than a lot of other breeds. You have to market your animals a little different. You’ll never make money from a local sale barn. Longhorns offer several markets though... they are the biggest of all the lean beef cattle, the tip to tip market, trophy steer market, and head and shoulder mount market. We utilize all of them. God bless and good luck in your endeavors. If you have any questions that you feel I may be able to help you with feel free to hit me up!

@@murrayfarmranch8447 A friend in my town has a longhorn herd. It seems like most of them are all roan. You seem to have collected a lot of beautiful and varied color genes. I especially like this brindled one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rYimpJ2hlMx6j6s and the darker spotted one that follows. Black and white marked are the most beautiful, but they are hard to find. There is a common gene among African cattle that makes a white stripe down the back and limits the main color to a big patch on the side. That would be useful in the hot desert sun so that the hot sunlight reflects off the spine and neck and does not absorb heat. Last year thousands of black angus died in a feedlot in SW Kansas during a heat wave. None of the Herefords died. Herefords have white heads and white back of their necks to keep their heads from cooking. And their red attracts less heat than the black. Red Angus do better than blacks in hot climates. Black Angus came from the far Northeast peninsula of Scottland, jetting into the freezing North Sea, farther North than parts of Sweeden. They developed for cold tolerance along with shaggy breeds like the Scotch Highland. People often do not think about place of origin when choosing a breed for their location. Animals and plants have thousands of genes for climate and environment. I rescued from extinction, and develop the Indian Corns of Montana and the North Plains. They are now feeding people around the world in climates that cannot grow commercial corn.

That’s amazing. We chose the Longhorn due to their versatility and hardiness. The Longhorn breed was thought to be brought to America by the Spanish. Herds ran feral in the United States for 400 years. They inhabited places like Texas, New Mexico, Kansas, and Oklahoma without supplemental feed, immunizations, help with birthing, etc. We feel like if you take an animal that has that much natural versatility and then provide an excellent environment the result will be an easy to manage herd. We do not have a large ranch so each animal we use in the breeding program was picked for their unique characteristics. We have animals that came from herds in Washington State, Utah, Texas, Kansas, Ohio among others. We have a beautiful group of weaned heifers right now. Some amazing colors in that group!

Forgive my ignorance, but how does this farm operate? Is this a cow calf operation?
@murrayfarmranch8447
@murrayfarmranch8447 3 ай бұрын
We operate as a cow/calf operation for the most part. The majority of our heifers are sold to other farms as replacement heifers. Our specialty is producing flashy colored females. We love specked and brindle patterns. We have a farm to table beef operation. 90 percent of the bulls born on the ranch are filtered into the beef operation. We occasionally retain a bull to sell as a herd sire but they are few and far between.

I do not know of anyone utilizing longhorns for milk production and don’t have any experience in that. Typically we see Jerseys and Holsteins in the US utilized for milk.
