The way I did it for my big peices of wood for my 180 and 300 is go to theisens and get one of the big steel bucket feeders they sell.. They are roughly 23-25" around in a square shape, and use a turkey fryer burner to boil the bigger pieces! Works perfectly for these bigger pieces and much quicker than just letting them soak in water. Some of my bigger pieces would have taken a month+ to get water logged just soaking like this.

TEFANET OE Should be ok - Most store bought wood is pretreated for any fungal/bacterial antibodies or parasites. A piece from outdoors vs a piece purchased in a store, which has already been treated is veryyyy different. For a piece like that you have to watch out for the level of salt that leeched into the wood as well as some other bad things that may be in the wood. I would steer clear.

Most store bought woods are baked or already treated to some degree. If you walk on a beach and bring home a piece of wood for your aquarium, chances are that that wood is loaded with bad bacteria. For something like that, you need to either boil it, use a bleach solution, or something! Just soaking it won’t do it.

REALLY controversial opion, but if you have a really large tank (150+) you really dont have to purify it, just wash it clwan and leave it for a few weeks to let microorganisms die out. Thats what I have always done. Another factor is if it is small fish, dont so this with those cause they are sensitive, but it wont hurt large hardy fish. Same with rocks, as long as the rock is a nice kind with no bad minerals, just wash it clean and leave it in the sun for a few days. Again THIS ONLY APPLIES TO WOOD THAT LEAKS NO TANNINS AND SAFE ROCKS.

Water changes will help clear up the water. The initial release of tannins is always the worst but after 1-3 months with weekly water changes it’ll get better and better. The tank will only get cleared of tannins after maybe 1-2 years, but it’ll be much less after the initial 3-6 months. Tannins actually are beneficial for your fish, so don’t worry! Just monitor your pH!

@@LongIslandFishGuy How are we supposed to tell what type of wood it is?
@denisekoenig94792 жыл бұрын
I was told to not worry about water conditioner when soaking the wood because the chlorine in the water can help kill bacteria
@LongIslandFishGuy2 жыл бұрын
It can’t hurt, just make sure you use water conditioner after adding the wood into the aquarium just to be safe!
