Springfield resident here and I've been going all of my life. When I first went it was only 1 building being used! I went Sunday with my teenage son. We enjoyed it. It gives us inspiration for our, yet to be (re)-built, N Scale layout. We ALWAYS visit the NELUG Lego layout. I like looking for hobby shops/private vendors looking to unload a "box" of gear. I have bins of rolling stock and buildings yet to be built that I've accrued over the years there. Over the years it's changed from a "swap and sell" show to more family oriented. When all of my kids were under 10 we had a blast, a very long day, but fun. I'll keep going as long as it's around. I'm glad you made the trip.

Hi RJ. Thanks for a review of the Amherst Show. Now that you’ve moved to NY you might want to try the Greater NY train show in Syracuse NY , usually the first weekend in November. 2025 will be the 50th year. You won’t see manufacturers expect for maybe Ross and Micro Marc but the O scale selection is excellent both new and used. After the show head over the JR Junction on Dewitt., about a ten minute drive from the show. jR junction has one of the best o inventory’s anywhere. Many not online but in store only items. I picked up a new MTH DCS remote 2 years ago( he has a ton of stuff and has done quite a few custom runs. The show is about a half day deal. I think you’d enjoy yourself and I’d love to see you cover it. ( contact Phil at JR junction for more info on the show)

Just returned home (Long Island). Attended the show both days. I second your comments re: 3-rail O gauge. Also wish the clubs with those great modular layouts would run more trains. Many times only one train moving and some layouts had four main lines. The kids and other non-hobbyists come for the trains! 😁

It's not just about brand new Lionel trains at the Lionel booth "which I walk right past these days, prices them selves out of my budget" , It's everything from all the vendors of different scales to the different clubs with their operating layouts. Still say there is plenty for everyone to see and be inspired by.

It’s not a good show for buying o gauge or even 2 rail o scale, although this year seemed particularly dry. However, it is a great show for layouts, accessories, scenery and vendors. I know what you mean about Rapido! I wish they did o scale too. Their providence and Worcester (my local road) m420r is the only accurate plastic model of this unique engine in Ho scale. Also, the European Train Enthusiast Marklin HO scale layout is my club. Thanks for complimenting our layout, I’m glad you liked it!

It was great to meet you at the show (I was the dude in the trench coat at the trainz booth) I've been going since 2013 and it's a hit or miss when it comes to finding good deals on O gauge/scale stuff. There were things i wanted like the Lionel SP SD40 but the guy wanted $650 for it which I'm not paying that much for. I ended up just getting a Lionel Southern hopper and the grass mat for my layout. Hopefully I can try to make it to york in April.

I formulate a list weeks before of what I need and then find those vendors off the master list of people attending and jot the building of where they are located and go from there. Mallory building had some good O gauge flat cars with loads guy is there every year Also scenic express is in PA no Colorado

I was there today. In my opinion there was a good variety of trains but ur right its more of a 2 rail show. It seemed the talk of the show was the general pricing of the hobby. I found alot of the trains seemed to be quite pricey compared to ebay stores. Really enjoyed the amount of layouts presented and setup throughout the buildings. Was way more fun to visit and look than go for buying imo.

Good to see someone young enjoying the hobby- I’m a Flyer S Gauge collector which seems to consist mostly of oldsters like me... Maybe there are some younger folks joining this group but I’m not confident as I see it’s lucky HO and O scale can bring enough young modelers to sustain growth in the respective gauges and there doesn’t seem to be as many clubs around as there used to be. Enjoy the hobby and keep up the interest .

That may not be true of all the Amhersts in the world, such as the one at the other end of your home state (near Buffalo), but it's one way people in those parts can tell people who know the place from those who just showed up for the first time.

If you're interested in collecting some postwar, I recommend starting out with something that needs a cleaning or a little repair, which will help with the price. There are so many older postwar collectors that are selling their collections and desperately trying to get their money back off of the 1990s to early 2000s prices when the values of pre 1970 Lionels peaked.

Nice review. It seems like the usual suspects, when it comes to the O gauge dealers and not too much else. Those Genesis units were pretty sweet, for sure. I like the European layout. I'm sure that they are the same ones who go to the Ann Arbor club's show, in Saline, Michigan. The G scale stuff in pretty cool and I've contemplated building one in my back yard. That is certainly a future project, though. The Blasted Mirrors are cool. Andre' Torres, owner of AYA Enterprises, is always at the Saline show. I have 18 of them and I'll be picking up a couple at the Saline show, next month. You really should grab one or two. They have a cool Dashing Dan one, which I have, along with the first Conrail Quality one, as I sent him the graphics and he now offers it in his catalog. They look real cool, mounted and lit-up on a wall in the layout room. I thought that I would see some of the other O gauge KZbinr's in your video, since it seemed to be a talking point on a number of channels. I figured that you would see Ray, as I think that he was going and I saw Chris Montagna for about a second. Either way, it looked like just an OK show. It's a bit of a schlep from Toledo, so it wasn't in the cards. An excellent video, as always.

Yeah, that seems to be the only show Lionel's interested in now. Maybe the Amherst folks are the only ones willing to supply them with blue and orange M&M's? 🤣 (And quite honestly I don't think Lionel's missed by many at York anyway!) Thanks for the report! Amherst is a great train show that has a little bit of everything train related. Definitely a must see if you are into trains in general. I am mainly into O gauge as well but really enjoy seeing everything they have there. We don’t go every year and I typically do not buy a lot there. However with that said I always do come home with something unique. To me it’s more about seeing the variety and appreciating the operating layouts. There is a lot to the hobby and this show is a great way to support the hobby. This show is similar in size but definitely night and day different from York in terms of buying O gauge. There are a lot of the typical very rude central and eastern Assatchuessets Massholes in attendance so be ware of that. As I know they are a sponsor... I would recommended skipping eBay on pre and post war trains. I have had several bad buys from sellers either selling something they didn't know about so they couldn't tell it was broken or sellers being outright deceitful in their listings. I would go to Trainz... I have bought several items from them at pretty reasonable prices. The big difference is, they know what they have, so yes, they know what it is worth, but they also test it and stand behind it... if you get it and it doesn't run and they said it ran, they will make it right. For me the cheap on eBay is such an unknown... and a couple items you got thinking you were getting a deal but in the end were broken or needed major repairs just isn't worth it for me personally. As someone else here said in your comments, people are starting to sell their collections they paid top dollar for. Not to be too morbid, but we are soon to see the great Boomer sell off, Boomer's which were probably one of the largest collectors of Lionel are now 59 to 79 years old. Average life expectancy is 77, so we have just reached the beginning of the great sell off. I am Gen X, my Dad turned 80 last year... I was home for Christmas, he asked me if I wanted his collection, he has been collecting pretty hardcore for 50 years. He said he was going to reach out to Trainz if I didn't want it... I was like "WHAT? Are you crazy, yes I want it", LOL! Even though my Dad is a little older than a Boomer by one year, I think they are all hitting that age where they realize they aren't going to be here much longer. For my parents, selling the collection wasn't about money, it was about not leaving a mess for my Mother to sort through and figure out when he was gone, well, that and my Dad hates my Brother-in-law and was afraid if something happened to him, he would just come in and take all his trains, LOL! Plus, it made my Dad super happy that I wanted them. I left this Christmas with my car stuffed full of trains. I am about 750 miles away from mystic parents, so since Christmas, I get about two huge UPS boxes a week full from them and my Dad wants me to bring a trailer when I come back to get as many as I can. He straight up told me on the phone he doesn't want my sister's husband to get his hands on them, LOL!

I was there for 6 hours and got 8 minutes of video total. By filming these videos, it helps to offset the cost of attending show or doing activities like this. I think it that show was awesome seeing all of the cool stuff, it just wasn't stuff I am particularly interested in.

@@rj.trains Well, if you ever come up again, stop by and we'll run trains. I'm only 20 minutes from the fair grounds.

It is a fantastic show! And it is as much a reunion and social event as it is a train show. You can talk with all sorts of vendors and there are tons of operating layouts. Sorry you are unhappy about the number of O scale items. The market really prefers things at real scale. You focus on your favorite things but are woefully inadequate on the showing of the great layouts with fantastic scenery. I’m sorry but you did not capture the essence of the show at all! You missed the boat!

IT WAS HORRIBLE. Too many Manufactures and layouts, not enough sellers
