I have heard about that technique you're using, but prefer using a cheaper and less toxic one using either liquid or pasty soap used to clean ceramic covered floors (brands found in Belgium and France are "D'Or" or "Palmidor" - we called that in my area's dialect "Vier Savon" - meaning green soap) and have effectively striped down multiple layers of oïl and enamels as well as two sprayed coats of car primer from resin, plastic & metal figures and models with such. Simply prepare a mix of lukewarm water (about 40 ° celcius) and dip the model and let it set in the mix overnight. The next day, clean with lukewarm clean water and a toothbrush… The advantage also is that not only does it strip the model but also cleans it of any grease and dust (I use this to clean all my models prior to painting them !). Hope this'll help too. Eric.

Hey Shane. Cool video. Here in the USA we use what is considered the Purple Pond. It’s a floor waxing / washing product called Castrol “Super Clean” that’s the expensive name brand of it. There’s a generic brand to this that u can buy at Walmart and what you jus call the pound shop over there like Family Dollar or Dollar General called “Purple Power”. Don’t be fooled and buy Super Clean because Purple Power is the same identical stuff and is actually made in the same warehouse as Super Clean is. Simple Green works S well and there’s a mockery generic of that called Mr. Green at the Dollar Stores.

I usually use brake fluid, which works surprisingly well, or oven cleaner, I have accidentally left a tiger tank soaking for s week in oven cleaner and no problems, however I would always remove rubber band tracks when stripping paint, and link and length tracks you can expect to have a couple pieces come loose or off, also use a large strainer when scrubbing kits because you prolly will have some parts come off, especially if you work in 72 scale, also headlights on real small afv's always seem to come off during scrubbing, in the future I will just remove beforehand, much easier than finding them later, also small mg barrels, maybe put a bright color on to keep yourself aware of them or you will be making new ones

Try using dot 3 or dots 4 brake fluid, safe on plastic,I use it to strip paint off of subbuteo figures .No distortion of figures , just do the same as you have been doing with tooth brush, after soaking model for 1 or 2 days then when done rinse in warm water.

Like this video Shane. I tried to do some of the same thing. It was such a pain in the butt I ripped off the metal barrel and resin parts and I'll just build a new kit. It worked but some of my kits I've used enamel paint and that WON'T come off :-( oh well such is life. Great video as always.

91% isopropyl alcohol has always been my go to, can get a pretty big jug of it at the pharmacy for only a dollar. Soak it overnight and usually don’t even have to scrub much, just rinsing under the sink is enough. Plus I can also use it to thin my tamiya so dual purpose

Very interesting video! I guess the more aggressive alcohols in the solutions attack the paint. I removed paint from my models as well using IPA (isopropanol) it works great and does also not attack the plastic. I work as a chemist at a aerosol/paint factory, so video's like these are quite interesting for me. Take care mate!

I use methylated spirits to clean my airbrush, its a hell of a lot cheaper than airbrush cleaner and yes I do it in the garden as I do my spraying in the shed.
@longlance67

I wouldn't recommend using methylated spirits to clean your AB. As it will start to attack the seals within the AB after a while

yeah the main problem I encounter is that I 'am not simply trying to strip acrylic paint, but alternate layer typically build up of other products, like oil paint, and lacquer, which react differently and require different based solvents ir petroleum-based opposed to acetate, I guess simply oven cleaner would work best.

@@longlance67 methylated spirits, however, in Australia the methylated spirits isn't purple like in Ireland. also, I did put a 88mm flak in as well (which was primed with Tamiya spray can and painted in Vallejo) and that seems to be removing paint nicely. I'm not sure if the Vallejo surface primer on the panther is sticking better to the surface than the Tamiya spray can on the 88mm. Thanks

Ever tried to use technical alcohol? Not sure how it is branded at around you. We call it technical spirit. What it is 91-94 pure ethylalcohol with some benzen, close to blue staff you are using, but less toxic. I use it as airbrush cleaner as well (Vallejo AB cleaner is 50% or around alcohol, if I am not mistaken), costs zero point nil per liter :) Actually last time i bought it it costed 2,8Euro per liter and for stripping it will last for some time in closed container.
@longlance67
@longlance67 6 жыл бұрын
I've heard of using ethyl alcohol before but could never find it for cheap must have been looking in the wrong places
@klonik79
@klonik79 6 жыл бұрын
This technical is cheap, because it can't be drank (it will not kill you, but that benzen will turn your stomach inside out completely, that;s why it is there), it does not have consumption tax on it, as most of them would do. Medical ones (like isopropyl) are usually more expensive as they are "safe" and not exempt from tax. Our local version of windex has too low alcohol content (

@longlance67
@longlance67 3 жыл бұрын
Both work fine, with the Dettol method being the less toxic option of the two, the only reason why I used Spirits over Dettol in this video is that Dettol is quite expensive for a small bottle which would require several for a large model. But its really up to you what you want to use

Any Information on if the Methylated Spirits would attack ABS? I'm currently stripping a Tamiya #56020 Leopard 2A6 Full Option model ( upgraded to a 2A7+ one: imgur.com/a/GzLRqvl ) after accidentally mixing brands of paint/varnish resulting in an orange peel effect and I noticed that one of the various paint strippers I've used in the process to strip that model ( Oven Cleaner, Revell Paint Stripper, VMS Clean Slate ) must have attacked some of the structural ABS parts ( rest is PS ) of the model though I'm not sure which one as I only noticed it fairly late in the game - Thanks to 3D Printing though I managed to replace all the broken parts
