Excellent tutorial. We bought some 1/350 figurines from L'Arsenal to use on our Star Trek Enterprise build, but I never realized the level of detail one could achieve on such a small scale. We'll most certainly try to emulate your technique when we paint our tiny crewmen!

Ostrich Longneck thanks mate, ya 6mm is around the 1/300 roughly, I was really surprised with the amount of detail the sculptor managed to cram into them ! Hopefully the methods used will work for your needs, if not if there advice you need please just ask it, I would be happy to help :)

Shane Smyth Thanks :-) I couldn't find any other tutorials for figures on such a small scale. Luckily you did this one, which is easy to follow and loaded with tips. The L'Arsenal figures are also surprisingly detailed for such a small scale. Hopefully we'll do them justice!

Nice tutorial Shane. You are very correct about the uniforms of the Confederates. In fact the Confederate Army, even at the beginning of the conflict, never had a standard uniform. It was a quickly built force and the Confederate government had no money itself in which to purchase uniforms; as it was a new born entity itself. The uniforms were made and issued by the state from which the unit was from. Therefore the 17th Alabama Regiment's uniforms would look nothing like the 23rd South Carolina Regiment. They even varied within the states. Many of the units at the war's beginning actually were wearing blue uniforms just like the Union Army. This was a source of much of the Union Army's confusion in the First Battle of Bull Run. Compounded by horrible leadership. Excellent job on the miniatures. I think 6mm is a little out of my ability range. Take care buddy.

TommyBoy ScaleModeling thank you for the wonderful information my friend, the ACW is a period of history that fascinates me, especially with Irish Brigades involvement in battles like bloody lane, marye's heights and the wheat field. I've read that too, that each Confederate regiment was distinctly different to the other in the army, as dyes varied due to the cottage style industry still prominent in the south at the time or where totally different colours as you mentioned. I can't imagine the chaos it would have caused during Bull run when your men are wearing the same uniform colour as your enemy, with all the powder smoke on top of that, it must have been a nightmare

A lot of Confederate soldiers worn there own clothing too. Due to many not getting shirts or pants issued to them. They got CSA grey hats, CSA metal insigna for their hats or shirts or coats. They were supplied irregular not a standard continued supplies. Also many used capture Union clothing or captured civilian clothing. They also got foreign issued clothing that got passed the blockade.

Great video - thanks for posting. I have been gaming with 15mm and 28mm but I'm thinking of starting 6mm so I can do large battles. I was a little hesitant because of the size, but your video makes it look quite doable. thanks again.
@longlance677 жыл бұрын
they are very simple to paint up and much easier than 28mm as the detail is more simple and once you get into it they paint up very fast

Almost exactly the way I paint my ACW 6mm, only main difference is I put the flesh on first. Matter of choice I guess, great video, look forward to more.

Interesting video, I have painted hundreds of these figures... have a large force of confederates... One thing I would suggest is that whilst it is true that uniforms were somewhat hotchpotch in the CSA if your painting any large number I would not mix and match the colours on each strip of four but paint up the 4 in the same colour and do each strip in a different Colour then when basing just cut the figures and mix them up. Although I was lazy and there is a certain uniformity to my troops...

Honestly I'm not sure with your comments on confederate soldiers being ill supplied. It is well documented in the fact that they were very well clothed. They were not fed the greatest but they were clothed pretty good.
@longlance678 жыл бұрын
+toby Brock from my research from 1863 on the supply situation became rather strained, especially in regards to rations, heavy equipment and shoes, this can always extend to uniforms as they struggle to get food to the frontline troops naturally this extends to uniforms as from what my time in the army thought me is that uniforms wear out, so therefore I put it that is possible to variations in uniforms as the troops either repaired, replaced their kit with whatever they could get to keep them in the field. Also from a gaming point of view I wanted my dudes to be different in appearance and feel to the Union troops I have thanks for your comment bud :)

not sure in 6mm you could even the checkered pattern but might be visible in 10mm and up
