Longlegs Spoiler Breakdown - Longlegs is a new film that is pretending to be something produced by A24. It's got amazing cinematography and slick production value but that's about it. The story is a mess with so much thrown at the wall in the final act. The characters are either dull, uninteresting robots or absolutely unhinged in the silliest way (Nicholas Cage). Longlegs had potential but poor execution. I explain why in the video.

The worst thing about this film is that it sucks as a detective thriller and as a horror. There is pretty much zero actual detecting. Longlegs basically guides her and then she magically solves the cyphers. So it's boring on that front. Then the supernatural element is not scary, comes too late and is underbaked and underwhelming. Just all around terrible...but it looks and sounds really nice.

She doesn't magically solve the ciphers, Longlegs helps her with that too 😂. He leaves a note in her house with a message, both in code and decoded, and she is able to solve it because of that.

The scene toward the beginning (mentioned in this review) where LL leaves a note at MM's house is a crucrial failure that undermined everything after. We see the main character nonchalantly assume that she's in no danger from the killer, albeit for no rational reason. Whatever happens after that, the movie has already taught us not to feel tension or threat from the killer.

The scene where she’s on the phone to her mum and the door bangs was the scariest moment for me. Something so visceral about being a woman alone and vulnerable in that moment, even without any supernatural element that would get to me. But like you said, nothing happened with it. She put the chain on the door, she sees something outside and GOES OUTSIDE LEAVING HER DOOR OPEN. Lock the doors and call someone c’mon. Then doesn’t she open the birthday card early? It says don’t open til Jan 14th and she opens it instantly. I was waiting for some consequence to that but it never materialises. By the time they show long legs in the grocery store it’s like all the intrigue is gone

So refreshing to hear you speak the truth about this movie. I'm so sick of all these 'critics' gushing over the most mediocre horror movies and pretending as if it is they are the best thing since Silence of the Lambs or Halloween. I can't think of any redeeming qualities this movie has. It is so slow paced and repeats the SAME BEAT the entire film. They tried to paint Long Legs as this Buffalo Bill / Hannibal Lector sort of creepiness and terrifying. But Nicholas Cage just had me laughing in disappointment at his portrayal the entire time. I never felt unnerved or scared of his appearance. It literally felt like I was watching an SNL skit. And when the time for the big reveal and twist of the film comes, they do it by dropping a bunch of exposition on us through narration. It would have been so much more satisfying if the main character found something in her home that relates her mother to Long Legs or her mother accidentally admitting something only the killer would know or literally ANYTHING rather than the script talking to us like we're too stupid to grasp the concept and spelling it out for us. And the amount of times the phrase "Hail Satan" is mentioned is ridiculous. It would have been so much more impactful if they ONLY TIME Long Legs said it was moments before bashing his head into the table and killing himself. Not to mention the corny wink and weird ending scene almost playing like a comedy. Overall just a boring, underwhelming, satanic crap from Hollywood. Will never revisit this again.

While I stand by that this is very much a big improvement over the insufferable Gretel And Hansel (this film did dredge how much that film frustrated and bored me), I won't deny that I didn't click with the payoff and felt the climax was rushed and undercooked in how it was executed. Cause, for the main reason behind the killing to be "THE DEVIL MADE ME DO IT" feels like weak sauce horror to me and it didn't help that our lead acts like a catatonic idiot in how she stops her mother from carrying out the latest ritual killing.

@@gukarl5045 How? Lee Harker is a supposed trained FBI field agent but violates pretty much every standard procedure for law enforcement. She also clearly hasn't gone through basic training. Things like tactical house clearing, room to room. Her partner gets shot in the face infront of her, she hides behind a window...Never calls in for backup. It's clear Maika Monroe wasn't properly trained and instructed for this role at all. This is was the breaking point for me, the moment the movie completely broke immersion and I just saw actors acting. And that is just one example. Later on, when It's revealed that Longlegs knows Lee the FBI department doesn't immediatly pull her off the case, no they even let her in the holding room to see Longlegs in person. You can't take this sh!t seriously.

@@Ultradocker Sounds like you take it too serious. You're so focused on the details that don't matter at all and you're missing out and being able to appreciate the movie for the art that it is, I mean you don't have to actually like the art, but clearly the movie had bigger priorities than presenting the audience with a picture perfect fbi representation. Don't think this is the type of movie for you, you frankly sound slightly autistic with how stressed you are about such irrelevant details like obsessing over fbi training or standard cop protocol. You realize a staple in horror movies is people behaving in stupid ways that goes against standard logic, last time I check people didn't watch horror films expecting to see real life mirrored with 100% accuracy. So you can tell me with a straight face if she had mimicked official fbi training you would have been able to enjoy the film just fine, weird. Pretty sad people are so dull these days that they can't suspend their imagination due to not having any imagination to suspend to begin with. Maybe you could enjoy more films if you didn't sit there with a stick up your butt fact checking things like a nerd. Again I am not saying you have to like this movie, but if your going to dislike it, you sure have a dumb reason to do so. I enjoyed the movie a lot, but can actually name several real flaws as opposed to superficial meaningless flaws.

I totally agree. The first two thirds are building to some kind of realistic conclusion but there are so many unanswered questions that I’m not sure there’s answers for. What is the point of the letters? What is the endgame for AFTER the final victim? Why does long legs let himself be picked up and how did they find him? Why does long legs kill himself? Why is that one doll left for our agent to find? I understand why it wasn’t used because the girl wasn’t there that day but why was the doll left to find by long legs? And why in gods name does the mom shoot the doll freeing harker if the mission ISNT finished yet?

@@devrayne6770still doesn’t make sense. Why “protect” your daughter who would eventually grow up and have to “take on the family business.”? Instead you keep her ignorant to her fate, for her to struggle with her future. Why not train her from a young child? That sounds wild but it just doesn’t add up. Because it lead to her moms death and then what’s the point of her daughter isn’t going to carry it on?

I liked its similarities to other similar movies, its plot flaws keeping it from being too serious, lack of sex and violence and that longlegs killed himself when he had done no crime. All in all its a casual movie that looks great for which I will give it some marks back that you quite accurately took away lol. I think this could be the new SOTL and thank God for that too.

Ok this review made me howl laughing. So perfect. Terrible pacing and too many underdeveloped ideas, but my main gripe is the ending. So this WHOOOOOOLE thing was about satan manoeuvring Lee into a position where she would eventually have to shoot her Mum? That was what allllll of this was about? That was the devils great flourish? Who cares?!!?! At no point was the relationship developed enough for us to give a rats ass what happens to Lee's mother. There is literally ZERO emotional weight to that outcome, no sense of irony, no bitter pill to swallow, no howling tragedy or sense of completion. What an insanely elaborate plan for a totally uneventful final death.

Not scary - boring - women actor is emotionless and robotic - nick is to goofy and not scary - they reveal nick right in the middle and instead of the end - he’s make up looks like a 10 year old done it - 5.5 out of 10 - the killer should of been not a goofy and taken seriously not a old grandma retired pensioner

This could have been up there with silence of the lambs... It should have been a serious serial killer film That's what the trailer had us believe... Although the horror was done really well I was absolutely gutted That this was some sort of stupid voodoo mumbo jumbo possession movie.. The only thing that can save this is if they did a prequel base in the 70s and had him killing people as he should be doing

Glad to know I'm not the only one who didn't care for this movie and especially the heavy breathing. This movie looked washed out and dull and so did the characters. And the ending was just stupid. Why sit there and just let it happen? And scary? There are DIsney cartoons that are scarier, like Nemo being kidnapped, for example. And when a movie has to literally explain itself at the end- that's not a good sign. I LOVE It Follows. I should go watch that again to erase this movie from my mind.
