Very clean and very professional operation. It is no wonder these fish cost as much as they do in the US market. These fish cannot be beat for their flavor and texture.

Hell of a job. Seems something of a shame when that big one there was probably a 30 year old fish. MSC is all very well but they don't really understand the breeding and life cycle of a fish that lives in the depths of the Southern Ocean - just look at the Orange Roughy. Fished like hell then suddenly, woops, this thing doesn't get mature until its 30 years old. Sorry about that. I suppose at least the Aussies try and follow the rules, unlike the Russians, Koreans and Chinese who just rape the oceans.... Its easy to educate yourself and avoid these species. You won't make any difference but you'll feel better

One tough profession in one of the prettiest locations on the planet. I did not expect so much still manual work to be involved, and the risk of serious injury is always present. Think about that when having your next fish burger !

Great film! Why is the line shot on the port side of the vessel? And why is there no automatic grading system?:)
@AustralFisheries10 жыл бұрын
Hi Ray, the line in shot from the stern on this vessel, hauled on the starboard side. Automatic grading a bit too hard with the large variety and some much larger fish. Average size around 11 kg

Hi Matty, there are contact details on our website, feel free to shoot us an email. When we are looking for new crew, we just require that they have had demersal longline experience and have the relevant tickets, etc.

What exactly is a toothfish? Is it a Pacific Cod or what? It looks somewhat like a cod but different color and shape.
@rayquigley13279 жыл бұрын
It has been renamed for sale in the U.S. as Chilean Sea Bass. Similar to Orange Roughy which is actually a member of the Slimehead family.

It's a type of fish that lives in the Antarctic. Their value is very high I believe, some ships have toothfish onboard cashing up around 41 million.

Toothfish are now an endangered fish now. Very much overfished.
@AustralFisheries10 жыл бұрын
Carl toothfish have never been endangered - some fisheries were fished at unsustainable levels in the late 90's / early 2000's by illegal fishers but this has now improved and over 50% of the world's toothfish is certified as sustainble. The Australian Heard Island fishery that we fish in has been independently certified as sustainable and well managed by the Marine Stewardship Council and rated as a 'Best Choice' fishery by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch Program.

Remember when Orange Roughy were "under fished"? Everywhere long liners go they decimate the fish populations. The Baja fishery may never recover.

def better than deadliest catch,,, but,,, the reason why they dont show this type of thing on American TV, is that Americans are bleeding heart people and would Freak out, if they showed processing of fish , killing etc,,,, I mean their willing to eat it,, but,, god forbid they see how its processed,,,lol,,

Johnny Butt i know there is no size limit on toothfish they sould
@AustralFisheries8 жыл бұрын
+The Proliners correct. There is no size limit in this fishery. However Marine Reserves (no take zones) are in place that set aside around 40% of grounds less than 1000m in depth, as juveniles prefer shallower water.
@AustralFisheries8 жыл бұрын
+Johnny Butt Toothfish is not an endangered species. Australian Government released a report into the use of longlines in this fishery, and found that less than 1% of the sea floor had interaction with fishing gear since the fishery began in 1997www.australfisheries.com.au/2014/08/15/15th-august-2014-deep-sea-cameras-reveal-limited-impact-of-fishing-around-heard-island/
@Lnugget8 жыл бұрын
+Johnny Butt what are the concerns? the by catch in this fishery is low and total take as a proportion of total population is low. Good on you for only eating what you catch, but you've gotta remember the areas you fish are some of the most exploited fishing grounds going, simply by virtue of them being easily accessed. Fisheries like the southern bluefin tuna long line fishery defiantly has 'serious ethical concerns' but arctic toothfish? Probably one of the best in the world.
