We own EV's so I'm sold on them as general transportation and have no anti-EV bias but IMO they aren't practical yet for long distance towing which is why I still own a diesel PU. Something to consider: Let's assume you spring for the $16K range extender battery and don't mind that you're losing 1/3 of your cargo space. Although you may start out the day with a potential 235 miles, when you stop on the way you will likely want to charge to only 80% since it takes a long time to get that last 20%. Also, unless you're much more of a risk taker than I am, you're not going to take the chance on running your battery down to 0 and getting stuck in the middle of nowhere. Figure that at least a 10% reserve is probably prudent. Do the math and you're now looking at a best case range of around 165 miles before you have to charge again. If that works for you, then great. It wouldn't work for me. Good luck with your decision.

Excellent review, Sean. You clearly articulated all the thoughts that have been bouncing around in my head. I am also concerned about backing using those tiny mirrors and the cameras and am awaiting some first-hand reports on that. For the moment the two main obstacles for me are the lack of towing range as we often do 500 mile days and the lack of pull-through charge spots. Until those get addressed we are going to stick with our diesel.

I agree excellent review. Those two main obstacles are what will hold back (for now) most RV owners. Like anything brand new, it's growing pains.

Tesla started rolling out trailer friendly SuperCharger spots months ago, long before launching the CyberTruck. And even where they haven't, there's usually some spots where you can charge without unhitching by blocking an additional charger. While that's not OK on the busy chargers, that's not the ones you're likely visit on a camping trip. You either want to go electric, or you don't want to. If you do, it's totally possible. If you don't, it's totally possible to find an excuse not to.

We made a reservation for the Cybertruck about a month before deliverys started. Almost two years ago we reserved a Silverado EV. Our plans were to tow a 7500 lb GD Imagin. Looked at Ford and Rivian and decided too little range. Now Rivian has the max battery for additional $16K. Nearly the same ranage and price as the Cybertruck with the extender. I believe Tesla has the most advanced truck. The Silverado WT 3 is probably the most cost effective to exceed 400 miles of range. Just bought a 2023 Silverado 3.0L diesel for $60K. When we're on long road trips from say Oregon to Arizona we need to cover a lot of ground each day. I think it might add another half day total over the 3 day drive or mean we check in after our usual dinner time each day. But that's just us. We didn't have pets that need potty breaks and we don't like driving after dark so we hurry at the gas stations. Also what if all the chargers are in use? How long do you need to wait to charge and can you reserve a charger or get on a list? In an emergency evacuation this could be mayhem. I'm waiting for a hybrid truck. One that charges will you drive. Thanks for the in depth video.

We just bought a Model Y and a Model 3. For towing an RV I think it depends on the RV, maybe not 5th wheels but that airstream, it will probably work well with the extended battery. EV-suitable RVs are probably a better answer, ones with batteries and motors of their own to assist their tow vehicle and recapture energy via regenerative braking. I would say wait until 2025 when the early adopter premium (price) drops and the bugs are worked out of the production line, that's when I hope to get mine.

Look at all the EV truck videos pulling 6,000 pound trailers and they can barely tow 100 miles and need to recharge. Another fun fact is 99 percent of charging stations in use today are for cars so you'll have to disconnect the trailer every time you charge to charge it. The charging can be up to 2 hours every 100 to 150 miles so traveling 500 miles in a day will take an extra 10 hours for charging. That battery in the truck takes a 100 tons of mined minerals to make it, not exactly eco friendly.

Sean, although there are some neat new features, but the batteries really have not changed and is still the limiting factor , especially when towing. Two thing about that, first when DC fast charging its recommend to charge to no more that 80%, which lowers the towing range from 170 to 136 and 235 to 188 respectively. If you do charge to 100% it takes a lot longer to charge especially with the size of the batteries in the Cyber Truck. It could be done in al lot of places, but I don't think it would fit your style of travel getting off the beaten path and being adventurous.

You said it best, trucks are tools. Tools come in a plethora of shapes and sizes designed to perform specific functions. IMO, as a tool, electric vehicles really shine in normal day-to-day driving. Short commute to work, running errands and the like. About 100 miles or so daily and to be slow charged overnight at home. For the purposes of RVers, we usually look for a tool that has the best balance between towing and range. Last week, my wife and I returned from our trip to Fort Wilderness at Walt Disney World Orlando Florida. Storms in the Florida pan handle had us stay near Gainesville for 2 extra days before resuming our journey home. We made the long trip home (780miles) in one day to be back for work. Quick stops to refuel made this possible. E-trucks will need to come a long way before they will truly be a stand in for our current offerings of trucks that tow.

But remember, the Alaskan highway is one of the last places the Tesla supercharger network has not covered-- maybe it'll happen before we both get our Cybertruck. I tow my 23' Globetrotter with my Tesla Model X. I ordered my Cybertruck a week after the reveal after the ugliness wore off, Now I love love love it. I'll also get the range extender. which should give me about 200 actual miles of towing, which works well for me-- more with that Pebble Flow or the Lightship electric trailers. Or I'll stay airstream and go with a 30' classic maybe. Charging sometimes I've unhitched, sometimes I dont. But to not use petro is a good thing-- it's healthier for all of us in many ways-- and way cheaper. It'll be an incredible boondocking rig since you can plug into the 240 in the bed. Its just not ready for RVing and why experiment when RVing these days - especially boondocking! - is challenging enough. Or, go buy more solar panels for your airstream.

I have talked to a local guy in the Sam's club parking lot who has a Rivian electric truck. As a light duty truck, it works well. As soon as you drop a trailer on the ball, you are cutting your range significantly. He towed a u-haul trailer 30 miles to pickup an antique desk. It took half the battery for a 60 mile round trip towing that trailer.

No. the toughest material is not on the outside. Some of the suspension parts are going to be made out of tougher stuff. Remember, they have to hold the whole truck up as you pound down the road. The skin was supposed to be 3mm of 300 series stainless.[1] They have reduced this. It isn't really an exoskeleton because there is now a chassis under it providing the bulk of the mechanical strength of the truck. [1] Beware of claims that it is a special alloy. Good video! You hit a lot of key points. As a two time EV owner, my opinion is the EV is all about the charging experience. Otherwise, its just a vehicle. Today, a Tesla is the benchmark for charging experience. I wouldn't have another EV without Tesla's supercharging network. A range extender is probably a requirement for EV towing. Remember, you don't charge to 100% and you don't drain to 0. Anything outside a 20-80% charge window is going to take more than an hour to recharge. Now your range extended 235 mile towing range is hovering around 140 miles with a 45 minute charge. Sure, you can plan for 60-70 minutes to get the last 20% into the CT from maybe a bottom of 12%. At this point, I don't think we even know how the range extender battery will charge, and at what charging rate. In the end, you will get around 200-210 miles of range for a 70 minute charge stop. At 65 miles per hour, you will be doing that every 3 hours. The range assisting travel trailer might sound good. Remember, while you are charging the truck, you will also need to be charging the trailer. How is that going to work? I mean, will it even work? Probably not with todays super chargers. I haven't heard of a range extending Airstream yet, have you? Remember, you wont be stuck with the CT either. If you make a case to Tesla, they will buy it back before the year is up, or they will give you permission to sell it. They will probably try to low ball you on the price. I would think you would be able to negotiate that value with them in exchange for not publicly humiliating the CT on KZbin. In the end, you might need to think of upgrading Seemore before your CT reservation comes due. You may be waiting as long as 3 Years for your CT. Will Seemore make it?
@stephenr219511 ай бұрын
As a Tesla owner and an RVer, I don't think its an option yet. For the long term health of your battery you should only charge to 80% which knocks your range down substantially. If you were using it as a weekend trip vehicle maybe but not for full time use. The only way I would consider the cybertruck in full time rv capacity would be to pair it to that new pebble flow or lightship trailers.

Great vid! I don't think electric adventure traveling will be a thing for the masses for quite a while. Doing it effectively even in the near future will be incredibly expensive. Case in point, a company called lightship RVs is creating an RV with motors and a battery to extend the range of vehicles while towing while also retracting it's top half and dropping into the lower half during travel to make it more aerodynamic. Although a great potential innovation, it will probably cost as much as a dual motor CT by itself. lol

Adjustable suspensions are available on many pickups. The truck, judging from the few clips offroad we have seen, does not have great articulation. If one is just "local travelers" OK but distance is a step back. What I would do is find the newest crashed F250 that would have interchangeable interiors and upgrade Seemore. The engine has been Bullet-proofed AND does not use DEF. Besides, it is paid for. Something can be said though that new is warranted with the amount of time spent in the vehicle but is one on vacation or have too much money?

I've had a Y over a year now and have had the CT dual motor on order for a long time. It's a beast and I'm excited for it. It'll be a great truck and good for towing the boat short distances. It won't be a good long distance hauler currently though, due to the charging network requiring you to back in as you mentioned. I took the Y on a 1,000 mile trip when we bought it. It took 25% longer; however, I was more rested when we got there due to the autopilot and mandatory rest breaks.

One distinction about the towing range. The Diesel delivers its range of 330 miles with a stock fuel capacity. The Cybertruck has to have a expensive upgrade to its fuel capacity. Which still isn't compareable at this time.

Sean, very fair and balanced review. I'm glad that you haven't cancelled - yet. You might want to consider contacting the Tesla CEO and explain the misgivings for RV owners. Your channel alone has 254,000 viewers, with xx percentage being RV owners, enthusiasts. That's one heck of a marketing audience. The charging issue with access/space around the recharging station is by far the biggest block. Even with a Tesla extension cord, a normal charging "corral" will not handle a hitched RV. If you back in or nose in, the rest of the rig will protrude across the aisle and block traffic. Likewise, if you drive in sideways, you block 5 other charging stations. Also, how soon do you think enough drive through chargers would be available to support cross country travel. Another serious drawback is that, as far as I know, you can't simply call Triple A (AAA) and get a jump if your battery runs out. The rig has to be towed to a charger. I think that they have a ways to go before the CyberTruck/RV become charger friendly, but if you partner with Tesla, all these things are ultimately solveable and, in the meantime, they will likely have all sorts of Beta testing you can do.

Most people don't drive 500 miles straight. I often drive 1300 miles between two properties that I own. I do not drive non stop. I often stop to use the bathroom, eat, walk the dog etc. But if range is what you want get the battery extender which will boost your range to close to 500 miles. The side mirrors are removable and easily replaced with towing mirrors which Tesla offers. I can also have first hand experience towing with a Model Y and the rear camera makes it extremely easy hook up a trailer so it was easy to pull a trailer and disconnect for charging which I have done many times on my 1300 mile trips. Also, Tesla is extending the cables on all existing and future Supercharger cables because they are opening up the Superchargers to all other non Tesla EV's

Yes, it looks as if you have a use case for which CT is NOT a good fit. For you guys it would require perhaps a third wheel option where the extra battery takes even more of the bed but has a much larger capacity and maybe has ITS OWN charger connection so that the battery extender could be charged simultaneously to the truck. Otherwise diesel is better for long distance towing.

The last thing we need is another KZbin channel getting excited because there’s a Panera Bread every 120 miles.

As you said, the stainless steel panels are less likely to be damaged in the first place compared to most vehicles. Shopping carts and car doors aren't going to dent it easily. For larger damage, I don't think it will be that hard for body shops, providing that there are actually parts available. The reason is that all they have to do is replace the panel completely. There will be no shaping, forming, sanding etc. Any adjustments must be made under the panel where it mounts. And even if the mounts need to be tweaked, the tweaks will not be visible, so this is just nuts and bolts work. I think it will be different fixing a cyber truck, but not necessarily more expensive or harder. I've heard the panels, once available, will only be a few hundred dollars each, depending on location. Don't take that to the bank tho. I'd want to see a real invoice. Databyter

Less?), would that make it easier to deal with the range limitations and other potential inconveniences?

Just dont go towing when it gets a little cold, wet or expect that range in the hills. The fast lane truck channel took a f150 lightning ev to alaska, needed a hybrid f150 support vehicle to accomplish it. Maybe you should watch their series to see the difficulty you'll encounter. They didn't even tow an rv. Just used a camper top and they had range, charging and finding charging Issues. Ford president did so himself in the lower 48, experienced the same issues himself, said the infrastructure isnt there to support it...and cut production in half for the 24 model year. For now, I would recommend the CT for anything except long-distance towing... or wanting to go unnoticed.

Tesla EV's are increasing by huge margins. Number one selling car in the world of any kind is the Model Y, it is also the number two selling vehicle in the US. @TwilightKid11 ай бұрын
@@davidwheeler7503 I agree that the horseless carriage was more superior to the horse and buggy buggy, just like Tesla EV's are far superior to ICE engines that haven't changed in 100 years and in case you hadn't noticed EV's are on par with prices of ICE vehicles. Model 3 sells for $30k and there are others that sell for $10k to $15k But I digress, more importantantly as Sony found out with the Betamax money will usually be the defining issue and when you add up all the costs associated eith keeping ICE cars on the road and the life expectancy ICE over EV's it's a no brainer. EV's last on average 3 times longer or more. Most people will tell you it's an amazing feet if an ICE car last 200k miles where EV's will run for millions of miles with way few parts to break and no maintenance only a fool would pick ICE over EV.

As with the purchase of any new vehicle, it depreciates vastly when you drive it off the lot. And with all the new systems it has, a myriad of things can and will likely go wrong. Amazing video and a great review of this new truck. I think you are correct to assume that towing range would be about half of trucks estimate range. However, that range is from 100 percent charge to 0. Most of the time you will operate in the 80 to 10 precent range of the battery. So take that into account when towing. You might start your day with 100 percent charge, but you will typically only recharge the battery to about 80% while long distance driving to minimize charging time. The 80 to 100% charging can be very slow and time consuming.

The Ford F-250 has went 250000 miles with some expense. Would changing the batteries on a CyberTruck be more of an expense? How far will the CyberTruck go on one set of batteries, especially constantly towing a travel trailer?
@ftnetops426411 ай бұрын
So, we always have a truck, this is our third F150 in the last three years. We had a Lariat FX-4, which we traded in on a Mustang Mach-E, and realized we still wanted to have a truck around, so we picked up a 2022 powerboost when we missed the 2022 Ford Lightning queue. In Jan, we took delivery of our Lightning Lariat ER. It was expensive, but only $14k more than the Powerboost. The Powerboost was reasonably economical, and could tow. That said, towing a 5000 lb load, it got around 11-12 mpg, and a range around 300 miles, or about half it's normal range... (physics, just are...). Obviously, fillups are quicker. I towed a racecar to Nebraska and back, at around $600 in fuel, or about what we would spend on electricity for 6 months in the Lightning. For us, the Lightning could be our last vehicle for quite awhile. We built a 3600watt off grid solar array to charge it and power a garage mini-split with 10kw(upgrading to 20kw before summer) of backup batteries, and for our level of use, now don't even use grid power to charge it. The system will end up around $4-5k and should have a 3-5 year payoff. Then free fuel until the panels give up in 30 years or so. Unless someone has an oilwell in the backyard, and a refinery, you can't beat that, and, since we're in Texas, with a rickety power grid, the Lightning provides 7-10 days of backup power in case of another outage.
