best demo!! Cool machine!! I am gonna get it. All the other reviews do not show such a structure and such a smart workflow as yours - and thus the real concept of this amazing machine. Its always put against other boxes (e.g. Digitakt) while for me its a different beast! I will run it through my analog console and I think the possibilities are endless. Thanks again, cheers!

Who cares if its got all the blinkys and features arpegiators and (ooh) the ability to sample? I can do all that, miles better with a GUI'd tool with infinitely more robust control and tools for manipulation, which I use day in and day out to very satisfying effect. We live in a world where (I, at least) dont want EVERY box to do EVERY thing. I want my 808 to be an 808. I want the mode of operation to be rudimentary step sequencer. I dont want it to sound like anything but a real ass 808. I dont care if it's got every single drum machine sample starting from the very first drum machines till present.. Listen to the sound of this thing. Then listen to the TR-08. You can list all the specs, advanced modeling architecture, and whiz bang this or that, Cool! But none of it means ANYTHING. what has meaning is what it sounds like, and how it inspires you to utilize it. everything else is gravy. I already have much better tools for all those functions you mension. But hey, whatever inspires you, cool! But dont insult us dum dummies who are just so dim we cant figure out why an mc-303 isnt 'better' than a tr-808.
@scottfindley1345
@scottfindley1345 6 жыл бұрын
p.s. I remember when people were throwing away all their jupiter 8s, JX8Ps, and all other analog synths for the the 'better in every way' digital synths, like the DX7, Korg trinities, etc. which were so fantastic, why would anyone want to ever use those old dinosaurs! How did that one pan out? Likes I said, use what makes you creative, and make more music. Its not liie you cant make greatm tunes on it, just like virtually everything else. I just think it dont sound one bit like an OG 808 909 or even the 'botique' emulators that came out recently. not even a little.
@scottfindley1345
@scottfindley1345 6 жыл бұрын
Pierre Chanceuse hah, join the club! Yes that’s what I’m saying. I feel the boutiques sound miles better because the emulation does one thing and one thing only -,emulates the sound and character of the og units, there are no additional steps in the signal flow (adsr enveloped, different types of filters, etc and in the case of the tr8 it is emulating analog synthesis, not playing back pcm samples and layering stuff upon that, which I’ll bet you this thing is. But let your ears be the judge my man! Ill still keep using my gold baby and driven machine drums library’s which sound better than any of these many times over..l but that’s me

Might be weird questions but say I want to use it just as a sampler. How long of a sample can I load? Say a 3 minute sample?
@longandmcquade
@longandmcquade 6 жыл бұрын
The maximum length of a single audio file that can be imported is approximately 180 seconds (3 minutes) at 44.1 kHz / mono. Stereo files or higher sample rates would shorten the maximum length the TR-8S can load.

Thank you for this video. My english is not so good but I have a question. Is it possible to make a melody that is longer than 16 steps? For example: My Kick 1 5 9 13 (Loop) My melody 2 4 11 14 15 21 27 32 (Loop)
@longandmcquade
@longandmcquade 4 жыл бұрын
Yes you are able to make patterns up to 128 steps long by chaining variations A-H. If there are any instruments you wish to play a 1 bar loop while your melody is longer, simply copy, for example, your kick pattern from A to any other variation to have the same pattern on each, then you can write the longer melody on another instrument with different programming for each variation.

Hi! Thanks for a brilliant demo. Have you figured out how to get the STEP REVERB to work? I select an instrument, press down a step and turn the REVERB LEVEL knob, but it changes the reverb for the whole kit! Clearly this is not meant to work this way?
@longandmcquade
@longandmcquade 6 жыл бұрын
To achieve this you have to set the CTRL knob for the desired track to “REVERB SEND”, then you can control the level of reverb send for that track per step. You can access the CTRL knob settings through the KIT edit menu.

I have a tr-8 and I just now have the tr-8s in front of me. The tr-8 sounds slightly better, however, the tr-8 is much easier to play. Firstly the tr-8 slopes downward where as the tr-8 is completely flat, which means you will need to tilt it, unless standing. And the whole point of playing live is to be able to change the kits quickly and easily, to something similar but different. With the tr-8s I am having to turn a knob for kit change as opposed to doing it more simply and quickly on a tr-8 pad, and you might change genres if you aren't careful. Also the tr-8s pads/knobs are much heavier, and this may be personal preference, but I like the lighter tr-8 pads. All in all though, all things considered, the tr-8s is a better value. Haven't tried the custom samples yet but I am crossing my fingers.

Phenomenal demonstration and explanation(s). One question - how do I program a manual fill that is *not* variation A-H??
@longandmcquade
@longandmcquade 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Eric! There are no options to manually sequence a fill unless it is using a variation slot. If you don't want to use a slot A-H for a fill, you will have to use the auto fills or the scatter effect.
@Ericuf
@Ericuf 6 жыл бұрын
Long & McQuade Musical Instruments thank you so much for your reply. So in that case, how does the device “decide” what the pattern is for fill 1 and fill 2?
@longandmcquade
@longandmcquade 6 жыл бұрын
Sorry Eric, we misunderstood your question! We thought you were referring to 18:47 when Dustin shows how to use a variation as a fill - we didn't realize you meant Fill 1 and Fill 2 under buttons 14-15. Each pattern has 8 variations A-H, PLUS two fill-ins. To sequence Fill 1 and Fill 2 under buttons 14-15, Hold Shift + AUTO FILL IN, there you will be able to select Fill 1 or 2 to compose/edit. You program them in the same way you would program a variation A-H. On that note, Scatter type and depth are settings found under PTN SETTING. Hold Shift + PTN SELECT.

Love tr8s! Anyone know how to set up the individual outs globally? Ie, setting it up so all kits and patterns go out thru the individual outs? Currently I can only figure out how to do that for each kit, but would love to set up so the individual outs is the master default as opposed to the outs defaulting to the “mix” stereo outs. Thanks!
@longandmcquade
@longandmcquade 6 жыл бұрын
There is no global option. The channel outputs are assigned per kit to allow more versatility. You can set up the outputs in a blank kit the way you would like and quickly save it across as many kit locations as you want, creating your own initial template. System output settings are used to set the behavior of each assignable output - Normal, Boost, or Trigger.

For $700, the TR-8S is a great option for up and comers and\or taking on the road. But no professional or audiophile would prefer it to either the TR-808 or TR-909 in the studio. As many have noted, the Kicks aren't as warm or round, and the snare\clap\hi-hats aren't as crisp. Where you really hear the difference though is when full patterns are played, the vintage machines have a natural sounding 'groove' that isn't recreated in the TR-8S. This is due to the vintage machines having real Analog Step Sequencers. When a pattern is played, the spacing of the notes isn't 100% accurate and microscopic inconsistencies occur that actually makes it sound + feel more organic. On top of that the sound sources themselves are Analog which introduces similar inconsistencies in the audio itself. Together this is why playing a pattern on either the TR-808 or TR-909 over and over again doesn't sound like a loop. But if you sampled a pattern directly from either machine, looping a measure of it would sound like a loop because its exactly the same every time. Likewise, the TR-8S has a digital sequencer that's perfectly quantized and plays back exactly the same every time... making it sound like a loop. Although the TR-909 has Midi, no professional sequences it that way, it sounds better to sequence internally and sync via Din Sync. The market never lies- the price of vintage Minimoog Model D's has dropped dramatically in the last two years because Moog's re-release of it is literally Exactly the same. On the other hand the price of vintage TR-808's and TR-909's have skyrocketed to around $4,000 each, this is because they simply sound and feel better. Roland has released multiple 808/909/303 emulators over the years and within a short period of time they sell for a fraction of the retail price on Ebay. I have zero faith Roland will ever release proper 100% analog drum machines in the future. Even if they tried, they'd find a way to screw it up by adding a digital controller + sequencer or whatever.
@nym053

Nobody cares, holy shit. There are no shortage of analog 808/909 clones out there for the people who want them. Even if Roland made an analog "remake" of either machine it would still just be another clone.

Please show me where you can buy a boutique for a fraction of the original price? You've over exaggerated to make a point. The originals sound warmer but the differences are not that significant. The new gear sounds fantastic and has many added features not found in the older gear. The Boutique ju06 cannot be got for less than 500 quid second hand as it's been discontinued. The same will happen to the other gear as Roland stops making them too.

Like programming to repeat A three times, then B two times, go back to A, then C two times, etc, then hit the play button to have it played, like in the Stepper Acid? If so none of the tutorials I've watched or the manual says how. is there a nudge or microtiming function in this wonderfullthang and i missed one point... can i tune the sounds to a specific Key, would it show it to me in what key i tuned the sounds?
@longandmcquade
@longandmcquade 6 жыл бұрын
No there is currently no way to tune sounds to a specific key, you can only increase or decrease the pitch of a sample by +/- semitones.

This is a dumb question, but I'n going to ask it anyway. I'm a big fan of the R8 mkII, does the TR-8S contain any of those old samples? If not, is it too early to, as a feature request, to ask for these sounds in any update sample packs? By the way, I'm still patiently waiting on my backordered tr-8s.... i can't wait

@@user-gi6ee8vj1y well its not a bass machine but a drum machine. But it is possible to place some bass drums and use the tuning knob to emulate as if it were a bass guitar hitting different notes. You should search on tr8skreamer for a simplyfied method of using this machine for melodies.

@@noordholland648 thanks for the suggestions. I want a drum machine with somewhat realistic bass guitar sounds. I want to use it to create a foundation for old school pop songs like, Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, Davie Bowie, etc. Later, I can add keyboards/ strings. I think I'm looking for a more traditional sound.

is it possible to like create Rhythm and make them as Styles for the Yamaha keyboards? I own a PSR-280 and a YPG-235. I read that with Genos and SX900? You will have to make the beats by hands and I am terrible with it. This Device I'm watching seems pretty cool!

The outputs are just 1/4", either mono or stereo. So you could connect it to anything you want. Direct to an amp, into your mixer (presumably going out to an amp/speakers), straight into an audio interface to your computer, etc.
