This game has unusual control scheme that actually feels quite natural. your abilities are mapped to face buttons and you control pretty much all of them by using the right analogue stick. For those who care, I'm sorry I skipped all of the tutorials but they are quite frequent all boil down to "use right analogue stick". All the gadgets you get are used as tools in creative problem solving (well maybe except for magnet which is stupid) you can approach each monkeys in various ways with different gadgets and you'll get different results. Also 100%ting the game's quite fun as the game gives you a radar pretty much right off the bat so you never run into a situation where you'll just be running in circles on breadcrumbs quest. If you haven't played it give it a shot, the game's available on both PS2 and PS4 tho the PS4 version has some minor graphical glitchesand doesn't fix improper widescreen in cutscenes.

This game brings back such pleasant memories. Especially Simian Citadel and Skyscraper City. Those levels have a seriously catchy song. Code C.H.I.M.P has two awesome tracks as well. This game has awesome music in general. I grew up with the PAL version so I'm used to Jimmy being called Hikaru though.

This game here is one of my most favorite Ape Escape games as well as one of my most favorite games overall too for PS2. I first got this game for my 13th birthday back in the summer of 2004 along with the original Ape Escape game for PS1 and I still have a lot of really wonderful memories with these games. I still have the original copy of Ape Escape 2 for PS2 on the physical game disc including the digital copy on PS4 as well which I purchased several years ago from the PlayStation Store which was one of the PS2 games released for PS4 at the time. Personally though, I really like the North American (U.S.) version of Ape Escape 2 much better. For some reason, the digital copy of the game that was released on the PlayStation Store is the European version and the characters in that version of the game all have British accents as well. I still like that version though too which isn't too bad, but I really like the North American version better with the American accents, especially since both Jimmy and Natalie also share the same voices as Ash and Misty, respectively, from the Pokémon series.

I'm playing it right now, however I'll do the PAL version of it, since it's got a completely different voice acing and localization, with British voice actiors and such. I'm having just as much fun as with 2, the only downgrade is that that game lags so damn hard compared to how smoothly the 2nd one runs, almost begs a question why they stuck to rendering the game in 60 fps if it clearly couldnt hold the framerate, it would have been lots more stable at 30 fps.

I just thought of asking since that was something I happened to notice myself from before. I can also play this game on PS5 as well via backwards compatibility, but this game is very glitchy when being played on a PS5 though.

Gadget tutorial: Stun club: swing in any direction to hit them( make sure to swing it to where the enemy is. For example: if the enemy is northeast of you, push the stick towards the northeast part). You can also spin it around by circling the stick. Use this to attack enemies or stun monkeys(not all monkeys or enemies will be destroyed or stunned requiring different gadgets) use this to raise platforms. Time net: swing it in the direction of the enemy. You cannot spin it though. Aqua net: controls changed in this game from the original. Move the right stick to move vertically. Left stick to move horizontally. R1 to get up to surface quickly( they removed the speed option from the original so you cant speed up). R3 for net Super hoop: spin to activate the hoop. It will last for a limited time. But make sure your on a proper surface or your end up tripping(example: if you get past the ledge of the roof in viva apespania, you will trip and fall.) But their is a trick to this: keep spinning and this will keep you from tripping and allow it to stay activated. Useful to attack fast moving enemies and monkeys on foot. Slingback shooter: pull on the stick backwards towards you to enter first person and you will have a reticle in view. Release it and the shot will go flying. There are other 2 limited ammo: Explosion: it will explode upon impact and may destroy enemies and may stun monkeys. Glided: these will target and follow up to a few enemies or monkeys. Perfect for fast moving enemies or monkeys. The shooter is also perfect for shooting aerial enemies or monkeys Rc car: use the right stick to move the rc car around. Press l3 to bring the car back to you. Can travel even narrow of spaces especially pipes. These can also scare off the monkeys haha poor monkeys. Sky flyer: spin the right stick to get airborne. Use combination of tricks to land to far away or higher places. Use jump and spin to get extra height and distance Bananaring: pull on the right stick to aim and release to fire. Spin the right stick to unpeel and emit a fruity scent to attract monkeys. Water cannon: use this to blow off fire and heated sources. Tilt right stick to blow off water. It can also activated the wheels to raise platforms Electro magnet: Tilt the right stick towards the metal objects with u shape on them to attach to them or to pull them off Enemies here will require you to use this gadget to pull of their u shape armor. Magic punch: Just like stun club but stronger. This thing is a beast. It can destroy almost anything. Also can destroy enemies more quickly and stun monkeys more easily. Tilt the right stick in the direction of the enemy or monkey to punch them. And you cant spin the punch gadget. You can only punch them. This is also used to raise platforms and hit switches. This is also used to break secret areas to enter them.

I'm pretty sure all it took for them to decide on the childish, cartoony art style for this game was looking at the Dexter's Island level from the first game. That level traumatized a lot of kids. Well, it's finally been exactly 20 years now already since I first got and played the Ape Escape 2 video game for PS2 which I got back in 2004 on exactly Saturday, July 31st, 2004 for my birthday at the time along with the original Ape Escape game for PS1 as well since it's been exactly 20 years now even though it hasn't really seemed all that long ago. Even though this game was originally released back in 2003 in North America, I didn't get this game though until 2004 which was just one year after it first came out and I also got Ape Escape for PS1 that same exact year for my birthday as well since I still remember how much I really wanted both Ape Escape games at the time. I even used to rent Ape Escape 2 for PS2 from a movie store many years ago, which was Movie Gallery, since they also offered video game rentals besides just movies, and I used to rent this game almost every single week up until I finally got my own copy of the game to play.

I wasn't the one to record 1 and when it comes to difficulty you're correct. The second game has the least health drops and there's no way to easily recover health or get lives in the stage select(basically have to count on random chance). 1 is allot more generous with lives and health and 3 lets you buy health and lives in the hub world.

This is the American version, yes. Be careful, as the European/AU version has different voice actors. Off memory, the game itself I do not believe is different, only possibly slightly. Also, the downloadable version on PS4 is the Euro version, just in case you want this version with Ash's and Misty's voice actors.

Yeah, I tried this game out too on the PS5 and I also noticed that it's very glitchy although it didn't seem too bad for me anyway. It would be really great if there's ever a future update or something for the game itself that can fix the bugs and glitches while being played on the PS5 so that people would be able to play this game fine on the PS5.

It's unknown what happened to Jake after the original Ape Escape, but Spike actually appears at the end of Ape Escape 2 and he's even a secret playable character in the game once you complete the entire game for the very first time. As for the baby monkey on Jimmy's shoulder, his name is Pipotchi and he's actually Jimmy's pet baby monkey who tags along with Jimmy for the majority of the game.
