NGL this is by far my least favorite of the Castlevania's mainly because the movement just felt so bad to basically have to double tap left or right so often.. The dash speed should have been the default movement, especially since it's literally the first power-up you get anyway so it wouldn't break anything.

To me, the series stopped being good after Super Castlevania back in the day. This one is just another ‘Metroidvania’; a boring and tiring setting.

I did a playthrough of this on the Advance Collection, and for a GBA launch title it holds up well with its ancestors and the DSS system adds an interesting layer of strategy and power to the usual arsenal. One of my favorite combos is Pluto/Salamander as it essentially lets you use Rondo of Blood's Item Crash.
