Alright so here's a re-recording of only the first part of PSO. I already recorded and uploaded the full game several years ago, but I messed up some rendering settings for the first part and it resulted in ghosting issues. This part has been re-recorded using emulation, whereas the other parts are recorded with component cables. I find the quality of the other parts to be acceptable as component quality is fine imo, so there's no need to re-do the entire thing. Anyway, I had a lot of fun re-recording this game actually and I'd be eager to touch on more Phantasy Star entries. This one is a bit of an oddball because it's designed to be played online and has MMO-like leveling. I'm not sure if the other entries are like that, but it wouldn't surprise me if the dozens of hours of grinding is exclusive to this version only. The video covers all of the offline quests. The difference between the Plus and the non-Plus version are a few more offline quests. I know the game also offers you "Download Quests" but I'm fairly sure there aren't any. There's much more quest content when you play the game online however, but online gaming isn't something this channel focuses on. What's pretty awesome here is that the objective of the game is really to just beat the stages and kill the boss monster but you're required to level your character and upgrade your weapons before being strong enough to do so.. and the quests are the perfect method of leveling your character up. In this video I didn't need to grind for a single hour and was able to level up nicely just by beating all of the quests.

In Plus I can't believe there are like, no quests.. on Dreamcast when my primary died I resorted to questing offline Ives' CDI v2 and that was a whole heap of quests

PSO Plus was done to get rid of bugs. Like duplicating and multy weapons. Someone would come into a game and 1 shot bosses. In the hardest mode. They tried to get people to play plus,but most wanted to keep the cheats.

I must have played this for a 1000 hours as a kid. I love the music so much. Sounds like a cliche but it reminds me of better simpler times in my life. Thank you so much for recording and uploading the long play for this and EP III they both take me back and give me so much nostalgia and good vibes ❤

I appreciate this game in the same way I now appreciate the original PS3 Demon's Souls: a fundamentally flawed game but holding integrity to its design and nature, unyeilding to that vision. One that demands a degree of respect. A true hidden gem.

As someone who played PSO and plays PSO2, I'll watch this with pleasure. Loved the soundtrack, some tunes, like Pioneer II, are in my gaming playlist. Thank you for the upload.

Man, this game, on OG Gamecube with that awkward ass controller. Many many good memories. I might have to get a modern controller and an emulator and play through this again. Thanks for this, great game, even by modern "standards". EDIT: I even had the broadband adapter for my Gamecube with a Hunter's License as they called it. This game rocked so hard. With the bugs and glitches, hacks, such a great time playing. EDIT EDIT: I had real-life friends I played with that had suffered the grind first, we skipped quests and just went straight in killing stuff, the "quests" weren't worth the effort. Holy shit I'm living it again. Memory card swaps, unable to play single player if you forgot to swap back.... The times this game gave all of us...

Ephinea server on PC. =] The original was 4 player co-op, and it was the first quasi-mmo on consoles because each server was a 'ship' in the game, and each 'ship' had a lot of lobbies to meet up with friends and the community on. I used to moderate the PSO-World forums on Gamespy. =]

Thanks for the video! This brings back so many good memories. Tbh, I actually did NOT like the combat in this game. Very awkward emphasis on timing, you couldn't cancel animation, and it was NOT made for fighting more than 1 enemy. Most of the time you had to just eat damage when you faced more than 1 foe... Despite the lousy combat, this is game kept drawing me back in with its charm. The art style, the music, the sound effects, the collectibles, it's all so well-crafted, I couldn't resist not coming back.

I felt the same thing when I had to re-record this one a while ago. I kinda forgot about how awkward the combat is because everything else is so good it overshadows that fact

The entire Online game was Duped items and hacked mags / un attainable rare drops. You would never in a life time get from playing the game. When this was new on Xbox in 2003 i remmeber all you would see was J Swords on level 50 charcters literally every day., Its was hilarious how they hacked into the code.

@@longplayarchive a month after the game launced there was hacks all over. Eventually you could get almost anything . You would go into the lobby a hacker would either trade you or just give it to people. They would go into the bank and drop tons of red boxes of every rare item . This game was so susceptible to hacking . I think it was action replay they had. He would run in a circle and you would have red boxes everywhere.

Only had a TINY nitpick, you forgot two of the main rules of RPGs with missions: collect stuff while on each mission (there were a few items you passed up that could be sold after each mission) and afterwards ALWAYS visit the stores/traders to sell what you couldn't use/extras of what you're not using and buy better weapons/armor/equipment. Though I see you were trying to get through the missions quick, you want to sell what would otherwise "clutter up" your inventory for credits you could use for stuff to boost your stats or battle ability, or heal/cure you. You weren't using the tech point stuff early, so that could have been cashed in.
@longplayarchive

I appreciate your feedback but honestly a lot of the pickups were small amounts of cash or super low tier equipment that would sell for small amounts also. The monster drops were sometimes ten times as much money than what I would find in these boxes and at a certain point I felt as if I had way more money than I needed. The quests also pay pretty graciously. Only n00bs go out to pick everything up lol.

@@longplayarchive You were loaded with stuff you could have sold off first (extra Sabers, Handguns since you didn't look you were a shooting character, Frames, etc.) then used the proceeds for better equipment (since I didn't think this was a game that had the "breakage factor" in it--only so many uses before it's broken/useless, in which you need at least one spare weapon at that point). And first time folks (or folks reacquainting with the game) always need cash (I know I do).
@longplayarchive
@longplayarchive Жыл бұрын
@theodorehsu5023 Yeah the handguns and sabers sell for like 80-140 mesos or something. Monster drops are sometimes 40-60. Quest completion is 500-2000. Just wasn’t worth the effort as I knew the small amounts would scale up to become worthless as I progressed through the game. The only usecase is to buy more healing items which I was already full with anyway. Maybe another thing that mildly played into my choices was the fact that I only had to record up to the Caves section as the Part 2 and 3 of this longplay have their quality intact and didn’t require re-recording, so I didn’t have to care too much about saving up mesos for the end game or whatever. Either way I don’t think I did anything incorrectly judging by the fact I was able to progress all up to where I needed to go, the Caves, without running into issues i.e having to use a Telepipe to restock supplies in the midst of a quest or using severely underpowered weapons that led to lower DPS and slower quest completion. Everything felt quite up to par.
@theodorehsu5023
@theodorehsu5023 Жыл бұрын
@@longplayarchive Which is true, the "long game" is important, but trading a plain armor or weapon for either 1)same type with a "plus" on it or 2) better armor or weapon, period, wouldn't be unreasonable. And those Telepipes can save your skin when you're able to use them. Also, early on, you hadn't used Tech points, so it had me wonder with all the monofluid if some of it couldn't be "liquid assets" instead in the short term.
@theodorehsu5023
@theodorehsu5023 Жыл бұрын
@@longplayarchive And "dolls" are extra lives, so those are important, with "half-dolls" giving you a continue though with only half the life points. Any way to keep up the fight is nothing to take lightly.
