Here we have sonic unleashed, had it not been for 2/3rd of the game where it's bad god of war i'd call it the best 3d game in the series I've played thus far. The day stages excel at the game design philosophy of "easy to learn, hard to master". Sonic has a very dedicated moveset and everything has it's application in the level design, like puzzle pieces in a puzzle that can be solved in multiple ways. The day stages feel great to get good at so i tried yo get at least decent ranks in all of them. When it comes to the night stages it's best you forget they are even in the game, even as a conoseur of dmc and gow clones i couldn't stomach them. Unlike day stages, traversal is ultra linear with all splits just leading to extras which is quite backwards considering that almost all 3d sonic titles offered multiple paths in some form. Here it feels like the everything was done just to make these sections last as long as possible, especially coupled with the fights which are all unskipable, again, unlike most sonic games where enemies were meant as an obsticle or means of traversal. The combat itself is also very meh, the combos are unnecessarily complex (no xxxx combos), enemy AI is annoying with them either constantly running from you or rushing you all at once and stun locking you... Not to mention the hit detection which is just plain spotty. If you want to enjoy this game play in on the emulator with a finished save file so you can just youse level select and play the good parts. You're not gonna miss out much on the story department as in this version of the game they don't even try to explain why you go where and the way they hacked it all up compared to the hd version makes it barely comprehensible. Luckly you can advance the plot to the end without reading a single line of dialogue... Which is a plus i guess? In any case a great messterpiece, play only 1/3 of it and call it a day also final boss sux.

I remember playing this on PS2, good times. The Eggman Land level was hard at first until I got used to it. And I was trying so hard to look for the collectibles and songs until a few years later I was like, "Who needs to collect the songs when I got KZbin."

Eggmanland i think i repeated for like an hour and a half till i was happy with the result but i enjoyed every second of it. At a certain point you just reach a state of zen repeating stages in this game, you reset at the tiniest error not because you're mad but because you know you can do it better cause this game is just so polished that all error is on your side. Unless it's a night stage than screw that D stands for "Done with it".

I gotta say, the night stages make this game kinda look like Donkey Kong 64 or Banjo Kazooie where you're exploring and pacing yourself. Besides, Sonic the Werehog is buff like Banjo and DK compared to Sonic in his usual form. By the way, one would wonder where chip gets all his chocolate. It's so nice of him to offer chocolate to his friends, but he's like a chocolate machine that doesn't run out.

This is how I feel, when I saw the sonic unleashed review. When I first heard of sonic, I thought he was a COOL character, always going super saiyan against Dr. Eggman and using other forms to defeat other foes. You know, sonic running around, and speeding through night zones, like casino night zone, tropical resort zone, all that stuff. And then, when I saw the game cover of sonic unleashed online, I thought that was just the typical sonic running like always, and I thought the right side was just sonic showing some aggression. BUT, when I saw the video game review of sonic unleashed, I SEE DR. EGGMAN, (mostly sega because they created the game.), Turn one of my favorite game characters into A CRAZY BEAST. THAT WAS THE THING I DIDN'T EXPECT. And then I realized, the right side of the cover, was not just sonic showing aggression, it was sonic in his WEREHOG FORM!! AND I COULDN'T GET OVER SONIC'S TRANSFORMATION AT NIGHT!! the Wii (and the PlayStation 2) version transformation is MORE scarier than the other versions. I could NOT get over that!!! THAT IS THE FIRST REASON OF WHY I HATE THIS GAME!!!

Love this game, and I still have it. Any chance you'll do the HD version? And by that I mean the PS3/X360 version, since it has some stages this version doesn't have....that being the Mazuri and Empire City stages. Also, while HD version has additional stages in the gateway hubs, the Gaia Gates in this one have puzzle rooms where you can search for additional medals and unlockable content not found in the stages. It was a nice gimmick for this version since some of the Werehog stages are more beat 'em up than speed run.

Theres a few reasons I dont like the wii/ps2 version. Please read it fully before replying I know its long. The stages themselves actually feel like hallways in the Sd version (wii/ps2 version) both in the day stages and night stages, in the HD version the night stages are more open and dont feel like hallways sure the night stages are longer but still, the daytime stages are a bit more open, but not as limited as the SD version, also theres no marzuri stages in the SD version As for the level design I feel like the Hd version did well with that which is one of the reasons why I love the HD version so much, empire city while being a bad stage the level design for it was great I always love to look at the background and see the cars go by. The boost gameplay doesnt feel right, you just use up a bar and thats it in the Hd version (ps3/xbox360) you can boost whenever you want, when you get the air bost however, thats when people dont like it, cause when people try to homing attack they just air boost and die, which is why people perfer the generations controls Some people dont like the hub worlds in the Hd version but in reality they save time, in the SD version you HAVE to talk to the towns people it is required, but in the HD version its completely optional you can just head straight to the entrance gate (sure in some cases you cant go to the entrance gate like spongonia, and you have to talk to a couple of people there to find P. Pickle and get permission in chun nan but my point still stands for the most part), yea sure it may not be what some people expect but atleast they're cool (then again thats my opinion) The controls are what some people dont like about modern sonic I got used to it but for some people it can get pretty annoying. I know the HD version has some lag spikes in adabat specifically jungle joyride day act 1 is the most apparent. As for the sun and moon medals... I never had a problem with them, but I know some people dont like them The final boss, for some reason people like the SD version's final boss better I dont know why, personally The 3rd phase felt impossible, and i could never beat it no matter how hard I tried. Other people have different experiences, tell me your experience in the replies. For sonic unleashed ultimate (If sega ever decides to do it), I think they should include both the Hd version and the SD version (kinda like a double pack) so both sides can be happy, each version would have its own save file, and it should also be for all current gen and next gen consoles including steam. There should be customizable controls with 8 presets (including default preset), you should also be able to change the camera as well, give the player to switch between auto camera (default) and free camera (like mario odyssey). Give the werehog a shadow, and fix his movement as well as he kinda feels stiff and its really bad when you're trying to move when jumping. As for the sun and moon medals, I think they should either work like they did with the SD version, or just reduce jungle joyride day act 1 by 1 level. Super sonic should playable after you beat the game, Im not sure if the werehog should get a super form tho this would be for both versions. And for your reward for collecting all the sun and moon medals you unlock debug mode, with no limitations. As for the graphics, I think they should be tone down for the switch, but for ps4/xbox one/steam they shouldnt change, but for ps5/xbox series x upgrade them a bit and make it 4k 60fps for ps4/xbox one/xbox series x/ps5 for the switch make it 720p for handheld mode and 1080p for dock mode. Also, I think you should be able to toggle the battle theme music its pretty annoying. I think these changes would be great and I think sonic unleashed ultimate would be 10/10 for most people

Sonic unleashed wii version doesn’t make sense because they cut 2 zones from the game and in mazuri they just skipped the zone and went to the boss fight, play the xbox 360/ps3 version for the story to make sense and a more challenging and speed based game with extra two zones and boss fights/tougher enemies in levels like windmill isle night.
