The black loco is 66 048, which derailed at Carr Bridge a few years ago after suffering brake failure on the descent from Slochd Summit in heavy snow with the Inverness - Mossend empty Stobart/Tesco containers.

Sad to see all those grids sat there rotting, especially when the memory of seeing my first one in the 70's at Doncaster is still clear in my mind. Also remember them taking over the last duties from the class 76 from Wath up what was left of the Woodhead. So sad to see.

It's not all bad, yes they've been left for so long, but they'll be made into Class 69s. It does involve a 'gutting' so to speak, and they'll receive EMD engines, but they should be back on the mainline in the next few years.

Can't believe so many scrapped 56s. I started my footplate career at saltley diesel depot and got our first brand new class 56 for training in 1977. Makes me feel really old seeing these relatively new locos being scrapped
@robertjamesgreen5 жыл бұрын
Not scrapped. They are being re engineered for further use as class 69

I seem to think of the 56s as not that old, but the reality is they were introduced over 40years ago! So many loco types in the past have been scrapped at less than half that age.

Apparently all you need is a 3D printer and you could make the parts needed.
