I believe you are unfamiliar with this hunt. The dog MUST bark to signal the hunter and distract the bird. If the dog doesn't bark high enough, fast enough or barks different according to type of contact... the dog is useless.
@hugoakerlund51144 жыл бұрын
In scandinavia we use dogs for pretty much every form of hunting we have. And the purpose of the dog's barking is to mask the noise the hunter makes when she's approaching the bird. And to keep the bird distracted. This is how we often hunt in Scandinavia. Our moose, bear dogs are trained to do pretty much the same thing Read up on hunting methods before you comment.

StoneCold Sweden I am very familiar with hunting dogs as they have been used for many hundreds of years! I have hunted here in Alaska for over 35 years from big game to Ptarmigans to grouse, I prefer to hunt from a more stealth aspect if hunting a specific species. So StoneCold don’t assume the only way to hunt is how you hunt ! I have been following THLR for as long as he first started posting . I enjoy the content both hunting and Long Range shooting which I have been doing for over 35 years both as a civilian and as a member of our Armed force here in the states.

@@bamaverick8740 I only assumed that you were unfamiliar with this type of hunt because of your comment. The impression I got from your comment was that there was something wrong with barking hunt dogs. I'm mean come on, how about you explain what you actually meant with your comment instead of writing a big long news article to defend yourself and accuse me of something I never did.

Thanks John, glad you liked it. The next episode will show more of the camp routines and approach for the bird, but I have not been successful in filming the actual dogwork. Short version is that when I'm close enough to see the dog, there is also a very real risk of being spotted by the bird.

Keeping it cleen & simplistic is another form of luxury in 2020.
@THLR4 жыл бұрын
Yeah it is. It's a bit cliche to say "get away from it all", but it is a mental reset to just read maps and take care of the dogs. Rapp doesn't seem to like me taking his birds, but after a night in my tent he seemed much more comfortable around me. I think it's nice to have the luxury of being in the moment and fully experience those things.
@GetMeThere14 жыл бұрын
I have working dogs, not hunting dogs (Rottweilers and German Shepherd). They usually never bark when I watch videos -- even with wolves howling and other dogs barking. But they bark here! There is a special "treed" barking that all dogs (and I think humans) somehow instinctively recognize (and find exciting). My dogs were very excited by this video, lol.
@THLR4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing the story, that's pretty funny. Yeah it's a pretty distinct bark when the dog is have identified where the bird is sitting, especially if he can also see it. Often the bird will give the occasional cackle, it sounds almost annoyed "stop yapping. Give it up, you can't get to me up here!"
@FearsomeBookling4 жыл бұрын
Beautiful video! What do you take into consideration when shooting the rifle at an upward angle (I live in a densely populated area, so we cannot do that)? Thank you!
@THLR4 жыл бұрын
Same as with any shot, that there is an overwhelming probability that the bullet will be arrested safely. For me that means trees behind the trees and no paths/infrastructure on the maps. In 200 years (the spets has been bred for this since early 1800s, on record since 1890) there has been no recorded accidents - they are mostly produced by moose and deer hunters.

Glad to see that you're back. But quick question, what equipment do you take with you on these hunts?
@THLR4 жыл бұрын
I'll cover that next episode. I'm getting old and like to sleep well, so I carry more than what is needed. The camera gear doesn't help either. I weighed in at about 35 kgs, but you can do 20 just fine if you are able to select or carry less.
@silvers744 жыл бұрын
Thomas is there any concern of the bullet traveling through and striking someone or something beyond when shooting birds up in the trees with higher caliber cartridge? Nice bird!
@THLR4 жыл бұрын
Yes, just like with any shot, there needs to be an overwhelming probability that the bullet will be caught safely. It is rarely clear skies behind the bird, most often another 100 trees or a hill. I know it is counter-intuitive, but this form of hunting produces less (none) accidents than other forms of hunting (every year) and it's been done like this since early 1800s when they started breeding the spets for this (the official breeding records starts around 1890). Even lightning hurts more people than this.

@THLR4 жыл бұрын
@@joecizin9357 no, I think you're allright. The dog isn't mine, but you see him a few years back in another episode. The tent was bought right around 1998, Helsport Nepal. I just never used it until very recently, it is/was a stormrated tent at 3.5 kgs but today Hilleberg makes a more suitable tent/same size tent that weighs in at around 2 kgs. I always made-do with a tarp in the forest, but tents are better for keeping bugs out. Usually I sleep under a roof, it's much more comfortable.

Hi Thomas Can you do a review on your friends gun?Is it a blaser dd99?Is the rifle accurate?
@THLR4 жыл бұрын
Nope I can't. He's in Sweden, I'm in Norway and the border is locked. The precision of the rifle barrel is not "fantastic" but it is "good" and shoots 1 MOA if I remember our conversations correctly. I don't own dogs, so the drillings never had much appeal to me.

Awesome Video like always. But Thomas, why are you carrying your gun with the heavy Minox scope? What happend to the Blaser scope which you showed as more lightweight alternative?
@THLR4 жыл бұрын
It's the only setup I had ready. The Blaser is mounted/sighted on the 6,5x55 barrel, this is the 6 XC barrel. I have a lightweight Remington 700 221 Fireball with a lightweight Leupold mk 5 HD 3-18x44 specifically for bird hunting. That Remington rifle is still with the gunsmith being rebarreled. So I just had to grab what I had on ready on the shelf.

@THLR4 жыл бұрын
