Brilliant...second to none history, well told. In my Highland, Nova Scots family, I am named, again, the generational Robert, in Memoriam to a free-fighting independent Scotland. Every summer...when I was a kit, we would do the pilgrimage back 'home' to the coast, from Ontario, where we all still attended our 1815 kirk in clan kilt. My Grandfather, who passed this dust just prior to my birth was Glasgow trained clergy, a horseman and 'circuit rider', a Presbyterian who rode hard throughout the whole of Maritime Provinces. We always well remember those exiled past dirty days... all forgiven... but here over our great, exiled North Atlantic swell, from our auld farm on Cape Breton Island, distances and times away... will remain a loyal and great supporter of a much stronger..... The United Kingdom.

He was a brutal ruler. His father's incompetence and being captured must have weighed horribly on Edward, he was never going to be taken advantage of like his father. And yet the history books are full of this great love for his wife. When she died he had a memorial set up at every stop they made on their honeymoon. The two sides of Edward are such contradictions.

I remember my dad taking a detour from our planned journey to show us one of the remaining crosses. He explained the history behind it. The significance, age, who Edward l and Eleanor were. We were told about his nickname, and the the battles he fought. As always, he managed to tell us in a way that genuinely excited me, and allowed us to picture the various scenes that he had painted. Not knocking you as everyone has a right to their own beliefs. "Abraham's seed" has been obscured and muddied over the decades and the people currently claiming the ownership of that name are the largest supporters of wiping out the true root of Abraham's seed. When one considers this whole idea comes from a book that tells you that damnation is for sure if you eat bacon or shrimp and damnation is also assured for those who wear a cotton/polyester blend... My personal favorite is my argument for every christian woman.. 1 Timothy 2:12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. Is this outdated? Did god know nothing of the future? Once again I believe everyone has a right to their own beliefs, I also believe in personal rights and that my rights end where yours begin. In the end I truly believe that we should do unto others as we would have done unto us. In the words of Bill and Ted, be excellent to each other.

4:21- Simon 100% had Henry’s blessing to marry his sister, saying otherwise is false. What made the marriage so controversial was the fact that Eleanor was the king’s sister. She therefore should’ve been married off to a foreign power or to a very important noble. The fact that Henry gave his sister to his buddy Simon (a relatively low level noble) was the scandal. However, the part about Simon taking out loans under Henry‘s name is completely true.

He is also a great grandfather ( I forgot how many too) for my husband, It is on his mother's side of the family. The bible must be right, in the end, if we search enough we would find we are all related in one way or another. It would go back to Adam and Eve in the end in the end. My husband's Great Grandfather ( still would need to look it up again to know how far back) but King Henry the 2nd and 3rd and on down through Royals today. Through the Plantagenet and Tudor families. We all would most likely find the same in some way. But not all would find it to be grandparents perhaps and it would be more distant for most. My family is related to some of the Presidents of the U.S. but not the same ones as my husband, which would be for my husband Pres George Washington, (actually for this Pres my husband would be a great-nephew (forgot how far back as last time) as he did not have children) So my husband would be related to The Pres. Bushes and also Pres Coolridge, as they too are related to the Royal family that we have found and traced to my husband. Even Princess Diana was a distant cousin as to the Royal family and Kate Middleton also is a distant cousin. Am sure all others noting the relationships would be the same if they connected it? It is so interesting how close we are to so many we have never met in person. But places like this brings us together in a small way.

And 100 years prior too that, the Scottish and English crowns were United by 1 man who was a Scottish King, James the VI of Scotland and I of England. Tywin and Varies the spider are probably the two most under rated characters on the show imo. Aside from fiction, it's crazy to me when I think about relatively distant history and how different and similar folks lives and world was. But I find it even stranger to think that our own times are other people's distant or ancient past. All our pressing concerns for the world and entire lifetimes are at best but a half attended one sentence footnote remembered barely long enough to pass a test by future high school students in the galactic republic that's slowly turning into an empire, or some other thing we can imagine less well than an 11th century peasant, Roman centurion, pharaoh or Mesopotamian city state member could imagine today.

Edward 1st Longshanks is one best English Kings for the national security of England itself. He is one my favorite English Kings. Some people will argue the point particularly on his style of ruling labeling Edward a tyrant. I can assure you he is not. Would you like a King to allow anyone to jerk your country around or would you like protection and a King that doesn't put up with any bullshit from anybody. There were many Kings like King John who was a egotistical moron who inherited the throne from the abrupt death of King Richard the Lionheart who is the other famous Kings throughout English history. Richard was known for his campaigning. Overall From King Alfred the Great in Saxon ruled England to Plantagenet ruled England I would rank Edward the Longshanks second because in the Saxon period if it weren't for Alfred the Great Vikings would have taken the entire island of Britain. Alfred the Great and Wessex were able to halt their advances and that went on for years even past Alfred's death in 899 AD.

Not in Alfred's league in all aspects but up there in sheer determination. He may be second only to Alfred as the force to be reckoned with. Absolute monarch.
@davidroberts72825 жыл бұрын
Alfred's situation was far more desperate and urgent then I would say any of Edward's predecessors or successors, except for Edwin the Confessor, the last Anglo-Saxon king of England who was defeated by William the Conqueror's Norman forces at Hastings in October 1066. Some English(or British) historians equate that year of 1066 and that battle as one of the most momentous and irrevocable in history of British isles. Alfred, 2 centuries earlier, didn't have a unified England to work with to fight on foreign invasion of Danish Vikings, who actually set up a rival English and Scottish kingdoms called the Danelaw in 878 C.E. and ruled these kingdoms, including York, until 933 CE. Even after the fall of Danelaw, Scandinavian Viking still remained a existential threat to Anglo-Saxon England for the next 150 years, even briefly conquering it again under Danish Viking king Canute I. If Alfred's Wessex had fallen or been defeated, more then likely the shape, political, religious, and cultural dimensions of England might've been vastly different then even what occurred 1-2 centuries later. By the late 9th century, many Vikings were still devout pagans and although were familiar with Christianity, many missionaries hadn't had much success converting many pagan Norse Vikings, that process was a very slow, gradual one and in some respects it wasn't peaceful and it was forced. These Danish Vikings probably would've imposed their own religion on many English living in their newly-conquered lands. From the very start of the Viking Age, the Norse most favorite country to invade, pillage, raid and conquer was their first: England. I can definitely imagine some Viking chieftain imposing more of their traditions on their English subjects more forcefully then Canute ever did 150 years later, and Canute was a Christianized Viking. Also, keep in mind that Anglo-Saxon England hadn't been converted to Christianity too terribly long before the first Viking raids began, in some remote areas, like Mercia, some commoners and nobles alike secretly worshipped many of the old Anglo-Saxon Germanic deities like Wotan or like modern-day Vodou worshippers in Haiti and West Africa synthesized the two. It was an environment the Viking conquerors could've exploited if they'd chose to in rallying support against Alfred's Wessex kingdom but mostly, they didn't follow through on any such policy. I would argue that along with 1066 Battle of Hastings, the most historically important date or event in history of British islands was Claudius Roman invasion of England in 43 CE that by the end of the first century C.E., saw the creation of a Roman-administrated colony that comprised all of modern England, Wales, and periodically parts of southern Scotland. I believe the Romans left far more of a lasting political, economic and national legacy that permeates and persists 2,000 years later after the first Roman invasion galleys landed near Kent in 43 CE. Many later Anglo-Saxon English/ British kings, nobles, generals, priests, philosophers, commoners, reformers, even revolutionaries tried to emulate, model, or fashion some aspect of Rome on the country or on the world stage like the name Britannia, was a Latin word the Romans called England, Caledonia was Scotland, Hibernia is Ireland. The British Empire borrowed a lot of its imperial imagery, ethos, forms of governance, imperialist views of conquest, domination of 1/5th of the world's population by 1900 from Rome's large, expansive empire.
