0:04 I started rewatching to see how often they threw strikes (and defenses) from out of distance, I was not disappointed.

If they're not wearing enough gear then they can't fight with intent.

I like the energy of ARMA members. I just wish they'd join the rest of the HEMA community.

This is devoid of basic principles of the longsword. Well, at least those of Lichtenauer's tradition. Why the wild cutting in large circular motions and jumping in and out of distance? No attempt by either party was even made to intercept or bind.

That's because their fighting is mostly based on Meyer, who lived 300 years after Liechtenauer and taught duel fencing in the renaissance period. Some people on this page apparently disputes the Meyer connection but it's obvious when you look at how deep they go in guards as well as the constant attacks wrist-powered attacks from the Langenort, something Meyer taught.

hanmedkommentarer At least when I was in ARMA (2011-2013ish), the curriculum drew primarily from Liechtenauer-tradition sources, with others--like Fiore or Vadi--peppered in every here and there. Now that I look back on it, despite drawing, like, 80-90% of their technique/philosophy on early Liechtenauer stuff (Ringeck, Paulus Kal, etc), I gotta say that in execution, it shows *very* heavy Meyer influences. Makes sense in retrospect, since Meyer and Mair were fairly popular to quote from for various reasons. Perhaps more people had studied Meyer than I thought? I'm surprised I never noticed that until you mentioned it. :)

I have never studied with ARMA nor their curriculum, but you give valuable insight. As far as I've seen from their public videos, JC seems to base several things on the drawings from the Mair treatise, which has a distinct difference from Liechtenauer, at least in my opinion. Also that one video that talks about going from the wrath guard to the key, guards that Liechtenauer himself never mentioned. It's very interesting indeed. Maybe these two students in particular focused their efforts on learning Meyer.

hanmedkommentarer I knew them both to a degree, but the only one I've sparred with was Joey Marmorato. I'm one of the ones getting their ass kicked by him during his 2011 prize-play video :) (I'm about 3 minutes in, repeatedly taking a pommel/cross to the mask, lol) He's pretty damn good and has great stamina, considering he was able to fight for over an hour straight--pausing only long enough to swap between steel and wood, to match whatever the next guy brought into the ring--and still win the vast majority of his bouts. From what I recall, he seemed more like an "early-Liechtenauer" sort of guy in his execution at the time. Then again, with less than 1 year under my belt at the time, my observation skills still sucked, so I can't really be sure. :p

EnlighterNo1, the full body is always a target in ARMA's free play. Due to geometry and biomechanics an individual striking toward a persons legs can be struck in the head at further distance than they can reach their opponents legs. Go to roughly 27:45 of this video "/watch?v=dkhpqAGdZPc" for an explanation of how that works.

I got a really nasty bruise on my elbow last week sparring like this without elbow gear. I imagine I would have been maimed in a real fight :(

I trained some with Joey (the guy in red) a few years ago. He's a class act, but we both would always walk away with some serious bruises. A little bit of pain is good for the education, I think.

this is full contact i believe, and they did target legs in this fight. red did it and beautifully avoided by the blue. what concerns me is how do they protecting their fingers in these sparing.

Jonathan Allen pulling your shots to avoid broken fingers with longsword? LOL

1. You can try, but it's not going to work. 2. Isn't the point to use period techniques. Not fantasy hybrid techniques?
@mattmanbrownbro10 жыл бұрын
Jonathan Allen I'm guessing in helmets and gambesons. Would make sense, because concerns for safety aren't really a modern breakthrough. I do realize though that this still doesn't address the face, since I don't have a solid idea when full face helmets came about.

um im not familiar with this but from what i gather whenever one of them gets hit they raise there hand in recognition of the blow. also i dont think either one of them could hit the other in the legs even if they wanted to they keep a great distance from eachother like outboxers they could only really reach towards eachothers upper bodies (or atleast the blue was outside boxer the red was very aggressive) it said it was sparring i dont think they could do full contact with the gear they wear

Is this some kind of tournament fighting? You'r not targting legs, or making full contact.

Not very smart gentlemen! I was expecting head hits and not hand hits, quite dangerous. Even as a fencing coach, I would NEVER allow this unless it was a head target. HEMA is a developing sport, but antics like this make it like the wild west.
