Some good explanations of Container Manager on KZbin. As a newby, I found this the easiest to follow. Thanks Lon.

I think if the image was identified as wallabag/wallabag:latest in your compose file, when you run a rebuild it would pull the new image. I think the latest is pulled if no version of specified but then no updates would be made since 'a' version is already present. I haven't used docker on Synology though, just docker suite running on Ubuntu. But great timing, my father has a synology nas and there are some things I can immediately think of that could be installed as docker containers that would automate things he does manually or replace more cumbersome applications he uses. I think this will be a great ref for him. I, and my father, also have found your ATSC3 tuner series very interesting as he's thinking of trying to pick up local HD/4k broadcasts and you spell it all out along with some good things to look out for (like antenna height and tree cover.)

I was really encouraged to see your video Lon. But, after watching you edit that yaml file, I pretty much gave up hope. For far too many of us that don't have the knowledge that you and many of your commenters have, far too many Docker apps will remain out of reach. I do appreciate the video though.

I have a QNAP NAS, but your video makes me want to try Docker out for myself. I think the process might be fairly similar. Thanks for the how-to! ~Frank

Strange thing is, I was told that the Celeron in the DS218+ (I have one too) won't support more than 8gb of RAM, but mine's humming along happily with 16gb.

Wallabag would be great but the app hasn't been updated since Jun 18th 2021 and is not available for my device because the app was made for older versions of Android :( anybody have any other Conatiners that are like wallabag with a up 2 date app?

What memory did you install on your DS218+ to get it up to 16GB? I just got me a DS224+ and even though it officially maxes at 6GB, I would like to know which ram stick so I can give it a shot
@LonSeidman Жыл бұрын
Although I pictured the 218 the one were using was the 723+ that can take 16. I am pretty sure you can squeeze 8 in the 218?
@rafraf23534 Жыл бұрын
Thank you. I actually got 20GB running on my 920+ like a champ but was just wondering what what memory to put on the 224+ but I think maxing it to 6gb should be fine as I will be primarily be using the 224+ as an offsite NAS through Tailscale. Enjoying the videos so far and thanks for tutorials as I find them very useful!

Docker won't run Windows - best to run it in the virtualization station.

Lon, have you heard much about the sandisk external ssds failing since they're are owned by western digital? The sandisk extreme portable are failing and deleting data from there ssds and the same thing has happened with western digital hard drives so I'm not suprised that the sandisk ssds fail because they are owned by western digital.
@LonSeidman Жыл бұрын
I’ve heard a little bit about it- I use one daily for editing and haven’t had any problems with it. Most of them have a 3-5 year warranty so hopefully they’re honoring that. All the more reason to keep a good backup!

@@LonSeidmanI guess western digital are known for hard drive failures and deleteing data from there customers hard drive and ssds. It started happening with sandisk external extreme ssds ever since western digital bought sandisk. I don't trust western digital hard drives and ssds. Every time I go to best buy, the western digital hard drives and ssds are always full of stock where as sandisk are low of stock or sometimes sold out. I never had any issues with any sandisk hard drives and ssds but I bought sandisk ssds before they were bought from western digital. I wish samsung, intel, micron, sabrent and even toshiba bought sandisk not western digital. I bought a used toshiba external hard drive years ago and it still works. I have mostly bought samsung and sandisk ssds before sandisk was acquired by western digital.

I wonder if any of the manufacturers will make a ssd that has the longevity and reliability of optical discs like 4k blu ray discs. Basically, the longevity of optical discs with the optional to write and rewrite data like the rewriteable discs such as cd-rw and dvd-rw but with the capacity of hard drives and ssds but using hard drives and ssds instead with a new standard format. It would be like a standard hard drive and standard ssds but with optical disc longevity with hard drive and ssds capacity with very fast read and write speeds that are rewriteable like cd-rw and dvd-rw but using hard drives and ssd instead. Computers nowadays don't have optical drives but I trust optical discs more than hard drives and ssds even though optical discs are slow when it comes writing and rewriting data plus optical discs are better for archiving data long term. I still buy use 4k and blu ray movies and they still look brand new and they look like there are no scratches on the disc due to some anti scratching coating on the 4k and blu ray discs. I doubt it will happen because the hard drives and ssds would last too long and the manufacturers would stop making money because there customers would no longer buy any new hard drives and ssds since they would be still working. It seems like hard drives and ssds were created to fail on purpose as part of planned obsolescence in order to sell a new model whenever they come out. I never heard of optical discs failing. The only time I heard optical failing is because the optical disc drive has failed itself or when the optical disc drive can no longer read and write the discs not the optical discs failing itself. I just wish music cds and regular dvds were created with blu ray discs anti scratch coating for better durability and longevity.

You didn't have to rebuilt anything, when you change an environment variable, all you have to do is restart the container.
@Fran-kc2gu Жыл бұрын
doesn’t do any harm to restart, so it’s okay docke it’s not that easy for no developers

Thanks for the detailed tutorial and info, but this wallabag is good example of what absolute badly written application is. This looks like total mess with way too much dependencies and requirement for the end user to do something that should be done automatically.

When I saw the title and that it was from you, i thought finally i can get a good foundational overview. Im frustrated. I expected you to 1) explain what you mean by self hosted 2) show us how to create some containers and put some simple applications in 3) tell us what we can and cant so with containers 4) How us how easy or it is to configure. I didnt buy my NAS because i wanted another degree. I bought it because i thought i could use it like a centralized Windows OS--install ans back up applications. This is way more complicated than i expected and no one is giving a good comprehensive overview. I thought maybe this video would give me some idea how at least get started with an app or two i want to install. This dives too deepl, too quickly for the title.

Honestly even if you explain everything well and it looks useable, this is completely useless and waste of time. Just get a cheap PC with a lot of sata ports and it will do EVERYTHING this can do and MORE! BECAUSE windows supports EVERYTHING and everything works on windows, it's more simple too. No point overcomplicating things and pay for more for synology and get less than you can get with a windows pc. For example get cheap secondhand Lenovo pre built PC with intel cpu with T SKU and it will DO EVERYTHING you need. If you need more storage get a new (or secondhand but make sure it works!) motherboard with many sata ports and NEW psu for that motherboard, and some cheap secondhand pc case. TRANSFER the Lenovo parts to your new motherboard and VOILA, you have hardware that STOMPS any synology NAS in EVERYTHING and it's CHEAPER than a NAS that has as many harddrive slots or performance that isn't shit. EVERYTHING RUNS ON WINDOWS! If you use soemthing that doesn't just virtual machine it LOL
