The best part of it is when the peasant gives him rancid tribute, he also does not execute him but just has him whipped. Harsh and most players see this as him really being a bad guy. But other military governors would most likely give capital punishment for this crime, where he only gives corporal punishment.

Heck, knowing how the middle ages operate when it comes to punishment, the peasant got off easy getting whipped instead of outright tortured or worse.

It was ages ago since I played W3 but if I remember correctly the whip he said to use was that kind that rips flesh from bones, moreover you can hear the whipping later and peasants screaming ends before the whipping is finished. Then again, one can interpret it as him passing out rather than dying.

Nevermind, just saw short where he orders the punishment, he said "knout" which appears to be a form of whip, mostly used for cattle. In tsarist russia they were used for punishment and there were variants of it that were more lethal than others but considering the context, the one used here was most probably the cattle one. But tbf regardless if it was lethal for him or not, it was extremely withheld punishment considering that the villagers tried to poison the army, I'm quite sure that any other army in the witchers universe would have had the entire village killed for that.

First he speaks to the man as an equal, second he allows him to keep 10 bushels (likely to feed himself/family), and when the received bushels are found to be rancid he has the man simply flogged instead of executed (as would've been the likely punishment at the time). Even the flogging was a mercy as despite being "in-charge" his actions/decisions are likely watched and reported on to the higher-ups. So to NOT punish someone who potentially could be trying to sabotage or undermine the occupation, would likely have seen the commander replaced by someone who would've just had the farmer hanged and called it a day.

They are negotiating. Let me make it clearer. Soldier: Reveal to me how much grain you have. Peasant: No, you reveal how much you need. Excellency. Soldier: I am not nobility. I am a working peasant just like you. Tell me how much grain you have, equal to equal. Peasant: Reveals he has 40 bushels. Soldier: Takes 30 bushels, and a favor for later. They are both attempting to make the other side open the negotiation with a number. If the garrison commander asks for 20 bushels, the farmer can agree right there and then. If he asks for 60, he can then counter by saying he can only give 40. The Commander likely has preferences as well. There is a minimum amount of produce he needs, which may be 20 bushels. But he likely prefers 30. So he gets the farmer to offer 40. He can then drop it to 30 as a 'favor' to the farmer and his village which he can collect on at a later time. The farmer is not free to just offer 10 bushels. Because any amount bellow the minimum required by the garrison, would just bring the garrison to the village. The farmer cannot offer 100 bushels, because then the commander would just accept 60 and the implied favor would now be worth 40 bushels.

That is exactly what would normally happen. In fact, a lot of the time, peasants would give a conservative estimate and because the lords would know this, they'd ask for more than the peasants said they could get. Which of course also meant that when people gave accurate predictions it was impossible for them to make enough and they would quickly go into debt.

Much like people may forget, "the customer is always right, in matters of taste." In this case, a man who understands the gravity of being powerless handles power appropriately when given position. Leave enough for the farmer to live well, and they will be healthy enough to yield a crop next season, should nature permit. To aid the kingdom with grain, and provide assurance to the people is the makings of a great leader. As I said, I have only seen the one clip of this man, and know none of his other interactions, but should he hold each with such levels of respect, that is the representation of a good man to follow.

I remember being confused when I saw that he offers you coin for the Griffin and I could refuse in disgust, and the game tries to make you feel bad about it as you get the cash while the guy is getting whipped. I understood it with not taking the money for Ciri, but I don't know the peasant and according to another comment the guy is called the village chief in the polish dub, so he for sure would know what's going on with the grain.

If I recall correctly (and my mind is quite fuzzy on this) the conquers were the 'good guys' over all. The place they were invading was very racist and if you side with the defenders they later start a genocide against elves eventually. On the other hand the empire had a policy of mostly gentle assimilation of all people and races. They even returned a historically elven city to the elves. They still did things we'd not look on favorably today though.

People try to play it off as "Both sides equally bad" but if you're actually trying to do the most good you can for the most people then Nilfgaard under Ciri (or her Father) is the best option. it ends with the most people alive, the most people being treated fairly/somewhat equally, the least amount of discrimination, the most economic benefit and even has one of the former governments in the region restored to power as a vassal state to Nilfgaard.

There are notable historical examples of benevolent rulers. Cyrus the Great, Emperor Marcus Aurelius, King Baldwin IV, Salah ad-Din, King Richard I "Lionheart", Doge Mocenigo, Suleiman the Magnificent, and more. There are examples of benevolent and good rulers throughout history. The problem with monarchies is that when you get a good ruler, it's great. If you get a bad one though . . . well . . . we've seen how that plays out. I know it's partially a joke, but I figure it's good to note that not all ancient or medieval rulership was unkind or unjust.

Seeing Crow Perch descent into chaos and misery was quite sad, and i liked to think even if Nilfgaard is a foreign and very authoritarian state, that with them in power and Ciri ruling, Velen would get some peace and stability.

What i love about witcher 3 is that a Character can turn out either Good or Evil based on how you interact with them without changing anything about their personality based on your response choice. This design made replaying the game much more fun. because the first time i played i thought i knew so much, but i did many things wrong so i was many times misinformed directly by the game itself which makes the game feel more alive in my eyes.

My biggest gripe with the Witcher 3 is that it's writers were extreme Nilfgaard simps, trying to make the brutal invaders looks like the best people, glossing over slavery and such. I'm all for making both sides have good reasons, but the north has been presented as evil incarnate while nilfgaard is a beacon of goodness. So boring, uninspired and a butchering of the setting.

True. In the game, it's a no-brainer to let Nilfgaard win. You're like "on one side you have degenerates superstitious idiots who can't bath and on the other you have basically the Roman Empire close to industrialization. Hmmm I wonder who I want" And I read the books before. And I'm rereading them rn and I forgot how it wasn't as clear-cut in the books. They still have kind of moral superiority on many things and are advanced, but they're also very barbaric and cruel. In Thronebreaker you see more the cruel aspect of Nilfgaard and I feel is closer to the book with the ambiguity

@@tylerb2523My point is that they are clearly morally ambigous at best but The Witcher 3 goes out of its way to show as many good Nilfgaardians as possible, barely mentioning it's evils like slavery, genocide, being the unprovoked aggressor, cause for the current witch hunts in the north and generally the reason for a lot of bad stuff. Meanwhile they removed all interesting northern rulers, changed Radovid froma reasonable but brutal Monarch to an insane idiot and making the only sympathetic northern characters either neutral in the wars or actively supporting Nilfgaard. If anything I feel like the writers of the Witcher 3 lament the fact that the writers of Witcher 2 had the Nilfgaardians do evil stuff. If they had their way the evil north would have attacked Nilfgaard because they are not bigoted enough.

That's how it worked in real life. The clearly superior culture would overpower and assimilate the weaker one.

I don't think they favored Nilfgaard that much. They just showed more good sides to them than in previous games most likely in order to make having Ciri as Empress actually tempting. If they were assholes nobody would want that ending.
