Never seen that coloring on a queen before. She's so pretty! And easy to see too.

Southern blood lines usually show weeker ability to get over winter time - sitting inside the box for over six months is tough and they discharge their stomach inside a hive and get sick. So they require special attention in terms of type and quality of honey they're outwinter on. I have a white envy for your mechanisation and access to the beekeeping equipment, as well as for your sophisticated winter shed. Good luck in your work. God bless.

Yap. Even in Italy they have darker bees in the mountains and winter brood breaks. The blondes are close to the sea all over Mediterranean and they can fly all year round. A little bit simplified.. there are subspecies all yellow too

We used to buy packages fr all over the world We never had much trouble wintering in Saskatchewan where its seriously cold . Its more about setting them up to succeed than genetics . People want bees that are easier on winter honey stores it seems . Huge hives are what we are after as we have 3 months to build up befor our money making honey flow so hige winter colonies are best for us . Now with mites its a bit different where genetics will make a difference and disease control has always been a concern .there are good methods coming lately for helping control disease . I see Ians huge spring hives and his work with the ones that are failing and know he will succeed, because he does the work required to be a beekeeper .

It's all hybridized anyway. I watch people over there on KZbin every day seeing a dark queen and say these are carnies or some other northern subspecies. Than l look at her bees and see every color there is. It's not about the queen's color it's her bees that are important.

We had those when my father started.. being on an island. But over time we switched to our country original bees. The gray carnies. But who can say what's in those queens. It can be just their color. It's the offspring that's important. Good luck with the adventure

I see you changed the queen rearing system a little. Have you started using six frames nucs as a finisher? Or as starters? Are they queenless or with a queen? Could you tell us a little about what has changed and what’s new?
