I learned how to drive in Santa Anita parking lot, and used to ditch High School and go play the Ponies and drink beer at the Track....Go Apaches ! 🍻

I was born there! After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, all of the Japanese-Americans on the West Coast were sent to internment camps. While the camps were being built, several Assembly Centers were used as temporary housing. Some of them were racetracks, like Santa Anita and Tanforan. My parents were sent to Santa Anita, a couple of months later I was born, and a few months later we were sent to our camp, Amache, in Colorado.

You must be my age or older. I knew someone who was a jockey at Tanforan. And I knew many trainers, jockeys, owners, grooms and hotwalkers at Santa Anita. Tanforan was closed in 1964. I'm sorry that happened to your family.

I also lived right across the street on S. Old Ranch Road from 1941 to 1959. Loved to hear the mesmerizing calls of announcer Joe Hernandez, whose sonorous voice would bounce off the mountain and echo back to my house.

Actually, the season always starts on December 26th. This year Santa Anita concludes live racing in late June. They run the fall meeting from late September to the first week in November.

There is a super fun 5k run/walk each year on Santa Anita Derby day. Runners start in the parking lot at a real starting gate...then through the arboretum, to the infield and finish on the track!

My horse, King George, died their training on Dec. 16th, 2009. Broke my heart. I raised him and bred him. I don't blame anyone, I love horse racing, but it can tear you apart too.

Santa Anita is great. Live right down the street. Alot of money around Santa Anita. Old money. Del mar track is beautiful and classy Imo
