i'll be honest--i don't make a lot of money, and i'm trying my hardest to make music a living. any help is appreciated, thanks!
. . . surprise!! here's what i've been working on the past couple months. "look back" is meant to be a melancholic indie rock arrangement album of some choice pokemon ruby/sapphire/emerald tunes that mean the absolute world to me. i wanted to focus on creating a nostalgic mood thru a fresh lens to show how these songs make me feel as an introspective old person. hoenn is like a second home and the soundtrack has been with me through so much. i put my whole heart into this and hope it resonates with others~
i plan to release all these tunes individually on youtube throughout the next month or so just for extra promotion lol. at the end, i'll also drop a cut track from the album--i hope you'll look forward to it :)
special thanks to my friend ‪@hyquo‬ for listening to all of these one million times to bounce off his thoughts on the mix/arrangement, etc. wouldnt sound nearly as good without his input!! ly buddy :)

~small blurbs abt each arrangement~
littleroot / route 101: inspired by cao dong. since it's leading the album, it had to represent the sort of emotional places the rest of the songs will go. it's mostly soft and intimate, but the climax feels like a scream. i think overall it has a soulful tone that tries to reach out to the listener. (i also updated the mix since it was last released!)
rival medley: inspired by akeboshi rockets. just wanted to go full ham and make an emotional, energetic, you-can-do-anything anime OP. :) i borrowed from may/brandan's encounter theme, their battle theme, and ever grande city. it's probably one of my favourites on the album. it feels like remembering a great friend whose kindness you'll always cherish.
fallarbor town / route 110: inspired by the pillows. it's a more paced type of energetic when compared to rival medley. i wanted this one to represent a sort of "cool, carefree" nostalgia--looking back with pride. in that vein, super proud of the main refrain. fallarbor town and route 110 both are underappreciated, so im really happy to represent them here.
route 113: inspired by kinokoteikoku and mass of the fermenting dregs. the first three songs had oomph to them, so i used the halfway point of the album to allow the listener to really chill out. the kind of song you want to hear when your nostalgic yearning leaves you feeling empty and lost. drown in the reverb with me~
shoal cave / abandoned ship: inspired by coalters of the deepers. the intent was to emulate the anguish of drowning in an ocean of your negative memories--a nostalgia that is tainted by anger, or fear. i think the abundance of phase effects and delay help make the track itself sound like an ocean wave. the climax is hopeful--i envisioned the listener clawing their way up to the surface despite it all.
surf / dive: inspired by my dead girlfriend. another contender for one of my favourites--it just came together kind of perfectly (funny, since it was almost scrapped multiple times). i would say it's curiously, cautiously hopeful--like you might be able to face the future someday, and that this idea might even be exciting, but not just yet. the interplay between the two songs was lots of fun to work with!
lilycove city: inspired by the pillows (again. sorry) and the great big sea. ultimately, this one represents a nostalgia for a place--specifically an island like newfoundland (where i'm from) and its musical culture (accordions/irish rock). an ode to your hometown with a sense of security to it. knowing you can be ok because of the good things you experienced there.
ending theme: inspired by toe. most of the album placed a focus on melody and progression, so i wanted this one to be all about the percussion (for the most part). it feels very "serious" and "final"--the intent with the distorion heavy parts is to anolog what it feels like processing grief. in other words, this one is: "it's time to let go of the nostalgia that protects you so you can live life with an open heart". the climax feels like you're sprinting towards the future.

such a well-made album!! clean and tight production and these arrangements are just next level. everytime i thought it couldn't get better you just kept surprising. like i said before, littleroot/101 is such a beautiful track. i felt a burst of nostalgia going through when that route 110 hit for the first time and it works so effortlessly with fallabor! the rival medley is treat for ears too, love the energy going around it. 113 is hauntingly beautiful, the solo towards the end is beautiful beyond words. really enjoyed the aggressiveness of shoal cave/abandoned ship and the occasional chaos with the drum patterns. surf goes so hard, might even be my favorite from this album, the bass melodies were insane and the shift to surf theme happened super smoothly wtf. lilycove was interesting too, the accordion especially caught me off-guard! ending is a great wrap-up for the whole album, really emotional with some sweet harmonies and drum work. such a treat to listen!!! love it all and love you too man!!

Longtime listener, first time caller. As a pleb who only knows VGM and musicals, I've never heard anything like this--music that demands to be heard, to such an extent that it's hard to think about much else. The instruments often sound like they're competing against each other, leaving no space between. And when they go hard, they don't fade neatly like wind or percussion, or remain constant like 8-bit--your instruments and filters make each note kind of sound like it goes off fidgeting in random directions until it's drowned out by something else. ... Maybe that's all just standard to this genre but whatever. Being able to discern familiar RSE melodies in this was fun/engaging and made it accessible to my uncultured ears. This whole thing oozes chaos twink energy on an unstoppable level and I'm here for that. My favorite part is 6:19, when the melody starts up but then you're like, "No. We should go HARDER. DO IT AGAIN!"

OKAY, I think I've found the right words: This sounds like a hurricane of things happening and it's difficult to grab onto any one thread--but not impossible. This is in line with your intention of this album being about moving on from a messy, sometimes traumatic past. And to that end, doing it via retro Pokemon remixes drives this home way harder than if it was all original melodies. Yes that's made it more accessible to plebs like me, and typically accessibility waters down artistic expression, but I think the Pokemon aspects and personal aspects are actually elevating each other here. Sorry, I spend way too much time thinking about the art of storytelling in a commercialized world.

This is such a lovely nostalgic playlist. It sort of makes me inagine the protagonists as young adults, who are now looking back at all the beautiful memories from their childhoods, and feeling s twinge of melancholy, while still having a lot of hope for the future. Kinda similar to the position a lot of people who loved pokémon as children are in right now

When I first listened to this album I was kind of put off by the fact that it didn't really follow the original melody. However then I accepted the fact that this was not supposed to be a remix, but more an inspired theme. And honestly I've really fallen in love with your style. I think this is a fantastic album that has some great instrumentation, good variety, and lovely mixing

MAAAAAAN you absolutely outdid yourself with this album, is such a nice gift for us who played the og games... my fav track has to be lilycove (which makes sense because i love the pillows), although rival theme and ending theme are among my favorites too. rest of the tracks are awesome as well, surf/dive has such a nice ending and made me want to check up on some my dead girlfriend songs, its a tad different from what I usually listen to but I'm liking most of it. anyways yeah, keep up the good stuff, I hope you keep making bangers like these in the future dude!! @@Emdasche I was just focusing on the difference between gen 3 and gen 4 in terms of my life. Ds Download and Play on a bus for Mario kart (gen 4 era) was really cool! But.. game boy advance was amazing. Everyone had an SP but I never did, I had a GBA. I actually used the wireless adapter to play hold-the-gameboys-close-to-eachother out during recess to do battles while people played four square. Gen 4 is so cool and the world I lived in and experienced when I was playing Diamond with an Infernape AND a torterra challenging Sunnyshore City's gym leader because I traded a version exclusive for an asian Grotle on the GTS was wild. But the world I lived in during gen 3 was mythical. It's the difference between Dawn and May.

also that alpharad album: CONTEXT Alpharad dropped this sonic-advance-sounding album on yt and made a community post or something referencing a BAND he was in and there was a now long gone myspace page for his old band with songs that as far as I know are now off the internet like the song named Dog. But a bandcamp EP with 4 tracks from the band exists under Queen Of Everything. The way guitar is used here (and all of the tropes of the genre of the album) reeks of authenticity that makes me think about an actual band of young teenagers singing about girls. ACED the vibe.

this is one of the best pokemon "remix" playlists i've ever heard. its great because each song seems unique from typical pokemon remixes and music while at the same time recognizable. its something i havent really seen many times, but its great and is very refreshing. i really hope there will be more of these in the same style made for other generations, (especially gen 5 because its my favorite and i think the theme of this music fits well for it.) great music, it'll be one of my go-to's.
