Neither one of them let her choose what she wanted to do because Marlene couldn’t take that chance of her saying no, and Joel couldn’t take that chance of her saying yes. Marlene would’ve had tried to force her to do it, and Joel would’ve killed everyone STILL so she wouldn’t do it ☠️

I don't think you are right here, because Marlene had the option of letting Ellie decide, but chose to deny here that. Joel never had the option to let Ellie decide, he only had two options here; Either let them do it without asking Ellie, or stop them from doing that. If Ellie could talk to Joel and tell him this is what she wanted, I think it's most likely he would have understood that he had to let it happen no matter how painful it would ave been, but there is nothing Ellie could have said to stop Marlene.
@TheSaltyAdmiral

@@chrisacult Perhaps, but you don't kill children on a hunch. Joel had two options here, either let them kill Ellie without even asking, or stop them from doing that. And remember, it's not just what Ellie would have done that is uncertain here, it's even uncertain that it would have worked, so you might be killing Ellie for nothing. Don't get me wrong, I also think Ellie would have wanted to do it. However you have to realize how this situation looks from Joels perspective. It's basically like telling a parent; _Hey bro, we're going to kill your child without them even knowing it, in order to _maybe_ save the world. Chill?_ I think the number of parents in the world that would let that one slide is close to zero:)

@Calvelozark I was about to say that! 😄That's honestly one of the weirdest things, to me. Growing up, Growing Pains was one of those sitcoms that people just watched (it's hard to describe what pre-internet culture was like in the past, way slower moving and everything on TV had way more significance). Even though the show was kind of on its last legs when they brought Ashley as the daughter, it was still a popular show. So YEARS later, reading about how she had a whole career as a voice actor, it was "Oh that's cool, that kid from Growing Pains is a voice actor!" Then years after THAT finding out that she was part of The Last of Us, and then Critical Role, and now, it's pretty wild to think about.

Very true to the game itself & dedicates a whole lot of time to develop the characters altogether. Joel is basically Ellie's guardian. Even now, a kid wouldn't be able to make that big of a decision. Parents would be consulted. Even though it's be hard to grasp, I still think Ellie should have been told what was going to happen. I'm pretty sure Ellie was under the impression there'd be tests and maybe a surgery she obviously wouldn't die from. Being that young, I think it would be fair to let her grow up some more and give her the choice to think about it. This cure also is not a guarantee. Marlene said they *might* be able to come up with a cure. Joel said aht aht aht Joel gave her the most choice by bringing her to the fireflies after telling her they could just turn back but he was dead wrong for lying to her after the fact. Really a difficult situation but I don't completely fault Joel. He lost so much you think he'd be in the right mindset to let Ellie go this time? Nah

Also, the knife that Marlene gave Joel was the one that Ellie held, so she gave him her memorabilia just as Ellie's mom gave her. I give the show a solid 8/10. The show changed the infected as they aren't wandering everywhere. They're kinda like the mutants from days gone, they assemble in hordes and can feel the strands of the cordyceps from miles away. The humans in the last of us (and in most zombie stories) have always been the biggest threat, like Bill says in the game: "The infected are predictable, it's the normal people that scare me". Of course we're always happy to see the infected because they're a huge part of the game, but the stories has always been more about the relationships between the characters. I bet we'll see even less infected in the second season. But I hope not, because even though they are less important, people watching the show without knowing the game shouldn't be able to forget the infected exist.

Don’t usually watch reaction videos, but I loved your guys series on this show. 8/10 is pretty accurate scoring, the lack of action did make Joel and Ellie’s bond feel a little rushed. Producers already said season two will have more infected so hopefully season 2 has even more impact.

It's also worth keeping in mind that a cure is impossible in this scenario fot those already transformed into Clickers, and likely Runners. That's why this story works exceptionally no matter the medium, it never turns away from how morally ambiguous and conflicted we tend to be as human beings put in a world where we are pushed to our limits to survive another day. I'm not shocked they maintained the power of that story from the game to TV, and it helps that you have a passionate fan in Craig Mazin to make it work so well. With Druckmann open to changes for the next 2 seasons, it makes me excited to see how they can massively improve on Part 2's story structure and pacing in a less constricted matter.

@@donttryitanakin1yt549 I'm considering the human race as a whole rather than just which factions vs which other group of people. If no humans have the capability to make themselves immune to the illness and decades and more decades goes on there are more chances of every human being on earth dying out eventually if the infected never goes away. But if at least a few groups of humans can survive the illness itself it's a much better chance that humans won't die out entirely as a race.

Have to agree with Roshi! They spent so much time in the first 2 episodes building the infected up and we really only get 2 major encounters with them (the Boston Museum, and Kansas City). I know a 1:1 adaptation is impossible but they could have definitely fit at least 2 more important encounters with infected swarms from the game (the swarm at the Colorado university, and the one they face in the tunnel before running into the Fireflies at the very end). It's hard to make zombies scary again, and TLOU (the game) did that! It really a shame we didn't get to see more of them. This is a show that definitely needed more episodes at least 2-3 more, not only for more Zombie action but to let some of the other plots really breathe. Like the way they did the Kansas City arc in 2 eps was great, David's cannibal town could have really used an extra episode to really enhance the story, not just from Joel and Ellie's perspective but from the townsfolk (there was way more to the relationship between Troy Barker's character and David which could have really been explored). The biggest indictment that episode 3 was pure fluff/filler is that in the season recap before episode 9 there is almost no shots or scenes from that entire story line. Great individual episode, and if the series was an anthology it would be more justified, but it just ultimately didn't add anything to Joel and Ellie's story, or character development.

The infected almost seemed like they werent a threat anymore in the world. Only existing for plot points. The season also needed to be at 10 episodes with the Kansas City double episode being one. Probably some other minor criticisms but those fixes would have been huge. They also should have added in the gray area from the game where the doctors gave a mild impression that their attempts for a cure werent working, to give joel a better gray area for the final conflict. Also can't believe they didnt let the doctor say "but I also have a daughter" for setup season 2

They ignored the gray area from the game and laid the "horror" of Joel's actions on top super thick because they have to justify the tonal writing change that happens with Part 2 that retcons shit and paints Joel as entirely unforgivable and wrong for his actions. THANK YOU SHEERA!! You said it immediately just like I did when I watched this ep!! Nobody asked Ellie what she wanted! It's like everyone in the apocolypse immediately decides that consent, bodily autonomy, and basic morality no longer matter. Like that doctor decided that the consent of his patient wasn't important anymore and was just gonna cut out a little girl's brain while she slept. All of the death that Joel causes this ep could have been avoided if everyone just agreed to ask Ellie what she wanted to do. Lay out all the facts for her so she can make an informed decision, and she probably would have chosen to sacrifice her own life for a greater good. But everyone assumed their own goals were righteous no matter what they had to do to attain them, so they all got clapped by Joel. Not saying Joel was right to lie to Ellie about what happened afterwards but he would not have felt that he had to lie to her about what happened if the Fireflies had given Ellie all the facts in the first place. It all comes down to the rights of organ donors. We don't let people steal organs from others just because we know they would save the lives of others. We don't mandate kidney donations even though that would save lives because it wouldn't be right to force people to give up their own organs without informed consent. The Fireflies and that doctor were basically willing to steal a little girl's organ, her brain, to save more lives without any informed consent. A simple conversation with Ellie could have solved all of this. Marlene even said Ellie probably would have picked the option to sacrifice herself for the cure but Marlene didn't take the time to actually ask! But it is a really compelling story to explore all the bad things that can happen when that simple conversation isn't had.
