For anyone worried about the cost of tailoring... 1) for sure, buy pants that need tailoring only in a price point you can afford, e.g., build the cost of tailoring into the top price you're willing to pay and 2) consider point #1 if you have a choice between a pair of pricier pants that fit great off the rack and a pair that are on sale but don't fit nicely. A tailor recently explained to me that some fit problems can only be solved by disassembling the garment and re-cutting it - which will be way more expensive than buying the "Wow" pants for full price.
@edennis85782 жыл бұрын
Also, there are some problems that can't be fixed. If the rise is too short, for example, that can't be fixed because there isn't enough material there.

Another tip - search out stores that have free tailoring on purchases. Dwindling in number but worth supporting. Nordstrom offers a set $ amount value annually for cardholders (they offer debit if you don’t want credit). But agree with initial post - a great fit at full price is a great buy.

I've always had thin legs. Even when I've gained weight in the middle, my legs have remained the same. However, I don't wear cropped pants because I think they're unattractive and cut the leg in the middle. They make you look shorter and disrupt the line of the leg. I'm sure others will disagree, but that's my story, and I'm sticking with it!
@Jen78672 жыл бұрын
I am the exact same way, Helene. 🙂 I have never cared for 3/4 length pants, coulottes, or capri pants on me, either. If you have thinner legs but a larger bust, or a bit of a tummy, (or both) wearing pants that are not full length seems to highlight this imbalance. By contrast, skinny, straight, bootcut, or trouser cut pants/jeans make me look look so much better! I still have plenty of options to choose from, so I don't ever feel like I am missing out by saying "no" to the other styles. 😉
@marjorieoliver71872 жыл бұрын
I also have thin legs and a little extra weight in my tummy and bust. I agree that Capri length or wide cropped pants are not flattering, but I like skinny cropped pants and feel that showing some ankle is flattering especially with white sneakers or flats.(I don't wear heels anymore 😔).
@americafirst91442 жыл бұрын
The trick is having the capris hit low down on the leg, only showing the thinner part of your leg. If you are taller, you can accomplish this sometimes by buying petite length pants. Also, wear a bit of a heel.

The shortest I like pants is an inch or so above the ankle. Hate capris. My inseam is 31 and many pants are too short, and tall sizes sometimes too long.

When I watched your video, I was about to leave on a flight and was wearing the spanx high waisted wide leg trouser. I tried to avoid the paper bag waist and yoga style pants. I want to be comfortable on long flight, and I hope these pants are still OK by French chic standards! Even if you buy spanx, most people will still have to get them tailored/shortened to fit properly (which is what I did because I’m not tall). Tailoring makes a huge difference! it can really be a self-esteem booster when clothes fit your body properly! I have to get all my button-up blouses and pants tailored but it’s well worth the years of wear and looking/feeling good. I cannot say this enough: get your clothes tailored if you plan to keep them for a long time! I get rid of far fewer clothes because I tailor good quality pants and blouses to fit me!

....I absolutely concur in regards to Tailoring... I mentioned it in my own Comment. It's definitely something thst is Worth it, depending on cost effectiveness of doing so. I'm also not " tall " ..(5'2" ) and I do have long legs, as I am short waisted...however, I still need to have certain trousers hemmed so they aren't too long, even with 3" heels on. .. These are great tips! I would also say measure, measure, measure! Especially online shopping. I have an app on my phone that stores all my body measurements, but a note could work too. Check the the garment measurements or sizing guide and compare to the actual body measurement. You could even sketch it over a body outline if you are good with visualizing. Perhaps another use for the style journal??? It can save some trouble of returns, anyway.
@sparklie9622 жыл бұрын
Excellent advice, but at the same time you've spotlighted one of my frustrations - that the online size guides are often so basic - bust, waist, hip - but rarely equally crucial info such as sleeve length, length from collar to hem, shoulder width and intended ease - e.g., how much bigger the finished garment will be at the bust than your actual bust/torso size - all key measurements that, for example, (good) knitting patterns include. When I knit a sweater I"m able to achieve a custom fit as it's so clear from the pattern details which stitch counts achieve which widths/lengths. Buying online has so far been fairly unsuccessful for me as all but 3 garments have arrived vastly larger than I was expecting...maybe because this season's silhouette is "oversized?"

Great tips. I don’t know if drawstring waists fall into the same category as elastic, or elasticated, ones but I find them useful for making my hips look wider and drawing attention to the waist, much like a belt does. You have to be careful about what you wear on top - for me that’s a fitted t-shirt or sweater with a high neck in a similar colour - or they will make you look shorter. I’ve not been able to get the same effect with front pleated trousers so I think it’s because the drawstring is adjustable so they don’t bag at the waist. They were hard to find five years ago when I got some denim ones from Roots but I’ve seen them in several stores this year. I just got a black cotton linen blend pair that goes well with a favourite black turtleneck. Most of my summer shorts have drawstrings now for the same reason.

When I find classic pants in colors such as black or camel that fit well , I may buy two in each color - one to wear w/ heels & one for flats . It may involve a hem change shorter or longer which is easily done at home or by a seamstress. Several sources have quality pants / jeans in varying inseams if hemming is not readily available ; it may be as easy as buying " short " for flats & " medium " for heels ( or medium & long ) in the same style .

So it sounds like then when deciding what inseam length to purchase in straight legged denim jeans that I should probably aim for pants with the *slight* break--pants with a slight break should give me more flexibility in what type of shoes I can wear with them without the pant leg being too long or too short. Would you say that is correct?

To finally find a fit for trousers I use wild ginger pattern maker software. Boutique is the women's styles. Just input your measurements and no more too small bottom or muffin tops. It grades to your measurements. I find that 3 1/2 yard of 10 oz bull denim makes good jeans. I don't look good in the jeans style I need pleats and darts for a curvy figure so I grade for trousers (not jeans) and use the colored denim. I am a 32w and 3 1/2 yards (at 60" width), is about 45 dollars. Trousers are just about the easiest thing that you can sew, and there are many videos about putting in a zipper. I'd say it takes about an hour to tape up the printed pattern, one hour to cut it out, and the fabric, and maybe one hour to sew, if that. Right now I am making 9 pair in various colors for winter, and as I am not trying to impress anyone I will be happy to be able to sit comfortably while watching tv and surfing the net. This way I will not have to depend on the elastic old women pants that have too short hems and (the damn) wide legs (at 5'3") I look like a frog and so does everyone else in those short pants. Anyway, fabric.com has the fabric that I use, and mood if you want good wool ones. Nothing beats being able to go against the establishment fashions to wear what is good looking and FITS.
@polishtheday2 жыл бұрын
Those “elastic old woman pants” that make us look like frogs is a good way to describe them. That’s what my mother wore - thirty years ago. I cringe every time I see someone in them. If you’re short, or have slim ankles, or both these look horrible on anyone at any age. They don’t have to have an elastic waist to look awful. When I see them being sold again and described as “straight” trousers (I wear wide leg pants and I’m not talking about them.) a red flag goes up and I want to warn the unsuspecting.

As always interesting ideas which do not apply to me or women who are plus size apple shapes going through menopause. Elasticized waists are a must as it is one of the few ways to get the rest of your pants to fit. Getting tailoring to accommodate your waist usually means having the entire pant re-worked. Pockets work well over a no-bum bum and I've already discussed trying to get a fit in the bottom. Wide leg pants are a good option if you have a larger upper body and small hips/legs as they tend to balance out the overall shape. Yup, interesting video but you seem to be leaving out a large portion of the female population with your advice. I'll keep watching as I enjoy some of your advice and I guess I'll just have to ignore the stuff that doesn't apply to me. Thank you for the video.

Not to mention that for some of us, our waist measurement can change from one day to the next. Even when I was a teenager, going on a weekend holiday meant that I would gain 5 pounds because of eating out every meal, then I couldn't fasten my jeans. Now at 67 it's worse. Now I also gain inches if I eat something salty and it doesn't take much.

Love this video! I can usually find trousers off the rack. However, sometimes the issue I encounter is that some trousers/jeans fit in the hips/bottom or might be slightly loose in that area but they're a little too snug in the waist, and I can't tuck anything in if I want. I have a fairly straight hip line and my waist is not extremely defined. So, sometimes I will opt for the next size up to accommodate my waist and wear a belt to make them look more flattering so they won't look droopy in the bottom. I've noticed that jeans/trousers within a certain brand are not consistent. I need to try everything on in the store or order multiple sizes and determine the best fit. Do any other rectangle ladies encounter that? Guys have it much easier than us ladies!

I don't agree. Men have zero choice in the depth of the rise. It's virtually impossible for a man to find trousers with a deeper rise. The trousers on the high street are OK for young guys with 32 inch waist with a flat tummy, but not for middle aged upward men. And if they get the waistline they need, the legs are really baggy, and as we know, most mens legs get skinnier as they age and lose muscle.
@deborahosorio5532 жыл бұрын
Speaking as a seamstress, problems with the rise in a pair of trousers are nearly impossible to correct in a tailored style. Sometimes in a style with an elastic waist, you can shorten the front rise a bit if it does not interfere with pockets. For those of us with a long torso or a short front rise combined with a long back rise, trousers are a nightmare. Unless I sew my own with many adjustments to the pattern, they are never going to fit properly.
@polishtheday2 жыл бұрын
I thrifted a pair of low rise wide leg jeans because I liked the denim. One wear was all I could take because I need a 10” or more rise. I still like the fabric - it’s high quality denim - so I’ve ripped them at the seams and am going to turn them into a denim skirt like one I saw on the runway. I also got rid of all low rise and mid rise pants in my wardrobe.

As a "pear" shape I have found the best way to deal with the waistband problem while saving money is to add an elastic inside the back or the waistband. There are several tutorials on KZbin demonstrating how to do this without it showing. Also I have learned to forget about buying curvy fit pants because they are made for women who's widest curves are in the thighs, not in the hips. When your curves are higher up in the hip area then curvy fit pants will look like puffy old fashioned riding pants. Standard fit in the size that fits the hips plus a hidden elastic seems to be the best solution.
@polishtheday2 жыл бұрын
You’re so right. I’m one of those with slim hips and big thighs. I just got my first pair of curvy jeans and have never had a pair fit so well in the thighs. They’re still a bit big in the waist but I can fix that by wearing a belt. Taking the waist in at the back doesn’t always work for me because the extra fabric hangs loose around the hips. It depends on the fabric and how much the waist needs to be taken in.

I agree with all your tips. This summer cropped wide leg pants were everywhere. The images of skinny models look good. But I didn't find any real person look good in them. These pants make their legs look shorter and bottom wider. I also don't care about most wide leg jeans on most people as it has so much stiff fabric on the bottom half of the body, except very skinny people, most people immediately look 10lbs heavier. Full length wide leg pants in softer fabric with drape looks a lot more flattering. And they always look better in heels, not necessary need to be high heels, any heels that lift the edge of the pant legs off the floor works.

Dear Ms Marie-Anne, I have discovered through the years that pants with the zipper "on the side" (not in the front) are so flattering for a lady (especially the ones with a little belly); the extra fabric and bulky shape due to the zipper in the front...is adding to the volume of the belly we want to hide. Therefore, zipper on the side is the solution that leaves the front...flat! What do you think?? :)) helene

I think the hardest is fitting trousers for apple shapes. They have a tummy but they often have a flat bum so fabric pools. You can't take trousers in under the cheeks to fit :(

I give a trick at the wrong time: when the fabric of the pants is very thin, cut some ripped shapewear tights at a sufficient height (if they are calf-length). So that they do not roll up, cut them or put them upside down. That's it, the interiors will not be marked or seen and you will be more subject

I always have to get my pants taken in at the waist and up at the bottom. They only styles that fit better at the waist in bottoms are the stretchy very high-waisted jeans but even so most pants, even petite ones, have to be hemmed. That is what happens when you're a petite "pear" with a long torso and short legs.

Tailored pants must be the answer. I prefer skirts and dresses, fewer fit issues. I would just as soon have no pockets ...except the ones on the front of jeans that are just for show. I don't use pockets.

I get out of most fit issues by buying men's jeans or trousers. OR I sew them myself. Men's pants have deep and full pockets, are of thicker fabric, cost less and have real back pockets. I'm a major rectangle, so it makes sense. Nobody believes me when I tell them that most of my jeans and trousers are mens. Something I do want to add with some stretch garments is that they stretch out during the day. Always a good policy to wear a belt to avoid looking sloppy. Even when not needed, I like to wear belts as it creates a more put together look.

@@MarieAnneLecoeur thanks. Growing up, everyone sewed, cooked ect. Now I'm considered an oddball for having these kinds of skills. Goes a long ways in making money stretch.

As I look around, the most important “secret” I see is having relatively thinner legs - not skinny, but slender. You can hide knock-knees, a thick midsection, a big rear end or heavy calves, but fat thighs are a killer for looking good in pants. Most of the other things mentioned have to do with the length of your body itself and not wearing a pant length that is itself unflattering and that too depends upon your particular body length. But all of these problems are exacerbated by a heavy leg which is really hard to camouflage, except perhaps by a long flowing top that comes down to just above the knees or almost to the ankle. In my next life - slender legs , please!

.... Good Afternoon, from Across the Pond, my Faraway Fashion Friend .. Loved this. I completely agree about tailoring of certain clothing, and of course it depends on the garment, and cost effectiveness. ( I have a very expensive beautiful and I mean real velvet skirt, it is black, it was so well made but it was a little too big and I went and I had it tailored and now it fits like it was made for me... honestly and it was not that much money it was well worth the investment). Ooooo, I detest distressed jeans ! Ugghh! Lol. Not elegant, not flattering ( unless you're under 30). I have seen 40 + women wearing them, all I could ask was.... " Why..... ?!" LOL. And I also don't like those jeans that hit too high above the ankle bone... they look silly, " high-waters ' we used to call them. 😉😁. All great tips, especially about Undergarments.... those " set the tone " for how ones overall ensemble " works well "... proper Foundations. What a beautiful jacket, I've seen you wear that previously and it looks so great on you ! Thank you for a lovely Video, Miss Marie~ Anne! And a big Thank You for the Master Class, what a generous gift!! Blessings ~ 😊🤗🙏🏻✨️💜

I have to say I don't agree with the cropped wide-leg pants as a no-no. I call them culottes and especially love them in summer in a light breezy fabric. They can look elegant too when paired with a nice fitted top. I especially like wearing my culottes to work in summer instead of shorts which would be less appropriate.

And what about cullotes? I wonder if petites and tummies can wear it...
@polishtheday2 жыл бұрын
I’m petite and culottes are a summer and fall staple for me. I don’t know if they work with tummies. You don’t have to be afraid of culottes because you’re short. The right fabric and length is important. They need to drape not bunch. Mine usually come down to just above the ankle bone. I wear shorter ones only with knee high boots. I wear all of them with close fitting tops and in a monochrome palette. Jackets have to be cropped at the waist and a bit boxy. I try things on in front of the mirror until the balance is right.

The distressed jeans should be out they are awful. I have seen older women in them. Say a prayer as they have no style. I found that if I fit my pants barefooted I ask to stop at top of foot..usually works!!! And throw out all capris, peddle pushers again not flattering unless you are in the garden

It is regratable how many women prefere throusers to skirts or dresses. And the consequences are not unimportant.

This video pales in comparison to most of her videos. Touches on a Feature but doesn't explain fully. I was annoyed every time she started describing the next Feature, because she hadn't finished explaining the aspects of Feature previously. Eg.: Explained what the rise is, that it is important, but didn't say why or what to look for.
