Nothing is more magical then the link between a true artist and his work. Thank you for letting us meet both!

You really have to be well versed in the protocol to collect pōhaku. It’s true that “in pōhaku there IS life” & that life doesn’t appreciate being taken from their home and forced into a different life… & they WILL make their displeasure known to you. You do NOT just take pōhaku, especially if you aren’t kanaka maoli.

Does he have any apprentices? I read he's the last Hawaiian stone carver so please tell me he's teaching at least one other person

Great and informative. Mahalo. One critique. The word chiseling out is "pao"without the okina. Not "pa`o". Is the word he is using "peko", is it supposed to be a Hawaiian word? The word for grindstone; is "hoana." It is not "ho`ana." There is no okina in the word. Sorry, I am not trying to be belittling. Our Hawaiian language has suffered under the present rule. Years ago the language was the only language spoken. When the power unseated our queen a whole generation grew up without knowing the language and words are widely mispronounced. i.e. "Ho`ana means to save for the future however, an "e" must be added and "hoana" means grindstone.
