I was a music critic for Christianity Today in the United States when ‘Look to You’ was released, and I immediately recognized it as a breakout - indeed, it was the album that not only turned Hillsong United into a worldwide praise phenomenon, but also asserted the band as its own entity, separate and apart from the broader Hillsong Worship brand. This was the Marty Sampson era - long before Brooke Fraser and other key vocalists would join the fold and grow the group’s reach even farther. The songs here were raw and rowdy and retained some of the youth-group vigor of their earlier releases, but they also had a polish and musicality that made them well-suited for world tours and big arenas. A ‘deluxe’ version of the album came bundled with a DVD (remember those?) with six songs from the live recording, and I think those videos, which quickly made their way to KZbin, was what helped cement this band and album’s impact far beyond Australian shores. The rest, as they say, is history.
