I became very excited when i heard 2 fish and 7 loaves of bread, thats enough to feed my 12 mates at my going away party, well 11 mates and one I'm still undecided about!! Your JM collection was enjoyable to see and the garden planting looks beautiful Tony. Expensive tree's here down under and unfortunately i lost a JM years ago due to hot winds. What a kaleidoscope of colour and variety!! These trees seem to provide interest in all the seasons - your garden must just explode in spring, but summer and fall have to be equally gorgeous. Who needs to pay money to go to fancy gardens when you have one in your own backyard!

i been taking cutting off a friends 30/40 year old benchidori this summer. took a few seedlings already a year or 2 from the base too. its the biggest jm ive seen around my area so far. almost as big as the native maples(north east us). actually just went back and took more cuttings for my aeroponic clone machine. just a small 24 site aero cloner but they work so fast and well. thanks tony. its a amazing collection you have. some of everything

Hi Nerina. Yeah it's crazy in the spring and autumn they almost give them away you'll have to get some seeds planted. They should stratify naturally outdoors in Austria

Thanks John. When it's in a shallower pot in a couple of years time, I think the flare at the base of the trunk will really develop a😢 as you say, it's going to look pretty special I think. Also my dad's more than competent when it comes to Japanese maples, so he'll make good decisions when it comes to the structure of the winter image

I missed this one earlier. My maples always disappoint, but I do have 2 healthy and very leggy Trident Maples (one is a clone of the other) that I need to figure out what to do with. Nice update video.

Sounds like they need the classic technique of allowing to grow and thicken mate. I'd get them in the ground somewhere for a few years

That's good news! I treated all my trees with nematodes this year and I've not seen a sign of any adults, so hopefully my garden is free from them like yours

Lovely selection Tony. I too love maples and have a couple of unusual ones such as Shiraz and Shishigashira. The Shishi air layers very easily, I have lost a couple of trees due to vine weevils. Apart from driving people nuts I can't see what purpose they serve in life. Well done on keeping the tree alive mate. A great video.

Cheers Mick I bought two shishigashira myself but only one made it through the first year in the ground. The live one seems to be doing pretty well now though. I think I saw Corin air layering a huge one at some point. Hopefully you'll be able to get some nice stock from yours

You did a good job saving the tree! You've got some lovely ones there, and they're looking great. My cousin has a tree that seems to self sow with great success, so I've got a few of them, just ordinary Acer Japonica, but after seeing yours, I'll have to have a look round the nurseries for something a bit special. Cheers buddy. Definitely worth picking up the odd interesting variety if you can, however those mountain maples should have some naturally occurring differences and I'd be itching to use them in a forest
