You know what I truly love about your videos? As someone who's first language is NOT English, I still understand you perfectly fine. And that makes it so much easier to understand what you are teaching me and to translate something, I didn't get. I really appreciate this.

We were in an electro microscope laboratory with kids the other day an saw that blue one in even more detail. That’s some trippy stuff. They seem blue because those shingles are build of even smaller things which bends light or only reflect the blue part or something. (Apparently it’s different from blue pigments.)

I think the phenomenon is called structural color - when reflecting white light, it amplifies the blue and cancels out all the other colors

Structural blue! Lexus actually made a car with paint engineered to work the same way as a morpho. Pretty crazy.

Actually I think there is only one living thing with real blue pigments and it's an olivewing butterfly.

I’d love to see the obrina olivewing butterfly under a microscope. It’s the only animal in the world to have naturally-occurring blue patterns. The reason the scales on the blue parts of the wing looks translucent up close, is because they’re not really blue. It’s a trick of the light that makes translucent scales turn blue, which is why the pigment changes when you get up close. Even blue birds use this trick, and if you look at a blue bird’s feather under a microscope you’ll get the same effect. But the obrina olivewing is different, since it actually has REAL blue dots on their wings.

From what I heard there are some butterflies (and/or other insects) that aren't really blue, but they look like it. What I mean is that the don't have blue pigments, but they have microstructures that fu*ks with light in a way that it comes back blue. Changing color animals should be using the same principles (like the octopus camouflaging as a rock wiht an swift change of color). Take everything I said with a fist of salt. My memory could be betraying me. PS: "fu*king with light may not be scientific language" EDIT: here is a good video about it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZiVZWmZa6epa5o&ab_channel=BeSmart TL:DR They have structures that absorb/filter everything but blue light, which is reflected and it's the colour you then see.

The change in colour in the blue specimen is because of the way the colour is “made”, it’s not a pigment, it’s the structure of the scales that reflects blue light from most angles. It’s nanotechnology made by nature. Fun fact, blue is the rarest colour in nature, and blue pigment is even more rare.

It's structural blue. It's the same reason why the sky is blue, the structures in the scales scatter blue light so they look blue but there's no blue pigment
@sugarmeowmmy2 жыл бұрын
The morpho doesn't have any blue pigments at all. In fact, their scales are brown more or less. We see the brilliant blue because of how the light refracts off of the brown scales. As my Grandfather used to wonder and say, "Nature's mischiefs .. !".

There is a video from both Veritasium & Be Smart about this exacly "blue shiny butterfly". They are actually not blue, it's just the color they reflect the light. They are brown in a non-light environment.

blue is actually not often found naturally. blue is actually a tiny layer of air that reflects blue wavelengths! its the same for blue feathers (they all have a grey, brown, other black base with the air layer on top reflecting blue). any iridescence in nature (hummingbird feathers, lepidoptera scales). I'm not sure if this mechanism is the same for actual body segments like the shiny abdomen of a sweat bee though.

Fun Fact about the Collor Blue in Nature: It does not exist! :D The color blue can only appear if the matter that absorbs the ambient light reflects in a certain spectrum. Like, you can't have blue furred animal's or blue shell's becouse they can't refleckt that light in that way.
