For the most part part, I would go with the Kodak Portra 400. There were a couple of shots where the Fuji looked better but the Portra 400 was the best in my opinion! Love the side by side comparison of the two!
@HenryPiffpaff5 жыл бұрын
Wow! Finally someone who really does side-by-side test shots! Thank you, Mister! It would be great to have something like this for Portra 400 and Kodak Gold 200 or Fuji C200. Do you think that's possible?

I found that the Fuji is more "whitiish" in general and the Portra has an edge when it comes to the skin tones. As usual very interesting video

Fuji is more suitable for asian yellowish skin tone.

I wonder what would happen if he rated the Fuji one differently. Let's say 200?
@tallaganda835 жыл бұрын
@@jctalk18 Yeah this is true, my wife is dark and our son is mixed race, for them Pro 400H is great, Portra makes them too yellow. Pro 400H was made in Japan specifically for Japanese skin tones.

Great video thank you for making it. I watched Part 1 & 2 and have a much better understanding of the differences between the two films now. I thought I'd like the Kodak better. Turns out over all I like the Fuji better. Thax again for making this! Keep on keeping on.

Other than Velvia, I never have Fujifilm in my bag. Portra is sharper and is not blue/green biased. Portra is warmer, and usually this makes skin tones more pleasing. In short, for portraiture, Portra is perfectly named. On the B&W side, you would have a hard time beating T-Max 400 for sharpness and very low grain. If grain is your goal, go with either Tri-X or Ilford HP5+. For medium speed I really love T-Max 100 or Ilford FP4+.
@jankubat26944 жыл бұрын
Portra is easier to use. You have to be very deliberate to mess it up. Fuji on the other hand desires a more careful handling (how you compose and light your scene/subject). For caucasian skintones Portra tends to be the better choice as Fuji renders skintones cooler. But when you get it right Fuji just looks better. It has better saturation, the grain is indistinguishable from Portra, and the greens and reds of 400H are simply stunning. As for BaW if you want truly grainless film, then there's the Fuji Acros. And I hope they will re-relase the Natura 1600. For whatever reason Fuji is overexposed/washed in this case.

Thanks for doing a comparison of my suggestion. I think all film should be compared this way, showing how it compares to other skin types.
@jasonblake55766 жыл бұрын
Great video, I know the Fuji is cooler but some of the shots seemed either fractionally over exposed (Fuji) or like there was a bit of flare in the lens?
@quamb4 жыл бұрын
not sure why the weren't balanced more in post and the fuji left washed out / over.

killer comparison video. I have only shot 400h a handful of times, I should give it another try now that the price has dropped. I LOVE Portra just like everyone else but 400H is a better choice if you're shooting a couple stops over exposed (IMO), Portra can get very yellow.

Very nice comparison. I've recently gotten into film and I'm loving the tones and feelings in different films. Kodak will always be summer to me and they really nail those warm July nights, especially in skin. I love Spring Fuji as well. Cool mornings, cool tones in skin.

I wonder how our preferences would change if you took the model out of each frame. Portra definitely has more pleasing skin tones.

Thanks for this comparison episode, you have helped me make an informed decision between the two films. I favour Kodak more between the two, but will shoot Fuji when the need arises.

Quality wise, how does 645 compare with the Leica cameras/lenses for sharpness and lack of grain? Great video, thank you creating and sharing.
@LocalAnalog6 жыл бұрын
Good question. I think the 645-being medium format- wins in the quality or resolution game. But combining Leica glass with the mechanics of a Leica m body is pretty unbeatable. I love both.
@DonKittle6 жыл бұрын
The 645 cameras (Fuji, Pentax and Mamiya) are all really outstanding with fantastic lenses. There are some real gems within the lineups (the 45mm Mamiya is unbelievable, for instance). You get a much larger negative that is similar in aspect ratio so grain is much better with these cameras than a 35mm camera. If you can, try one out and shoot a few rolls; I think you'll be impressed.

Hey guys, I’m definitely enjoying the videos. Question, how are you guys taking your photo prints and creating digital copies to show in the video. Are you scanning photos, what type of gear do use to transfer, without compromising quality?
@LocalAnalog6 жыл бұрын
thanks for the question, man! I send almost all my film to Richard Photo Lab or Indie Film Lab, just depending on what it is. I have them develop and scan my film -- so they are handling all the post-processing. I like IFL for comparisons because they have an option to do uncorrected scans, so no color tweaks or anything like that. But sometimes I scan at home and use an Epson V600. If you're patient, it's a decent option.

You should rate fuji400h @ISO100 and portra 400 @200. In my opinion the fuji in this battle is underexposed.

colors/tones have a lot to do with how you are metering too. Were you rating at box speed and metering for his face?
@LocalAnalog6 жыл бұрын
Rated at half box speed, metered for shadows every time.
@amosmgz5 жыл бұрын
The Kodak is a lot more realistic and dynamic. The Fuji is more dreamy and surreal. Personally I liked the colors on the Portra better than the 400H. Both are solid; but it'll all hinge on what you're going for. Also, Copeland ftw

I'm way late to this party, but I don't see if it says if you shot at box speed? I'm new to film and wondered how it was rated and processed... any correction by the lab or in post? Thanks!!
@LocalAnalog4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jen! It’s good when you’re starting out to meter your shots at half box speed so that you can over expose a stop. Film tends to get muddy when under exposed but can handle over exposure well. But you get the lab to process as normal. I hardly ever ask the lab to push my film. Hope this helps!
