There was a TV show in the early 00s called, 'biffs, bumps and brawlers', hosted by rex hunt. Watching that again put into perspective how much physicality has been removed from the game.

@@Littlefella73 So what do you make of the rule changes that have made the game less physical? I mean, just as an example, players are now saying that they're worried every time they tackle someone that the opponents head might hit the ground, resulting in concussion and suspension. i.e: inherent physical attribute of the game and within the rules.

It depends. At lower levels it gets really dangerous, and it overflows to spectators and spills post-game and all that. On an AFL field it is usually contained, and it is all reprimanded properly and real consequences. There are a lot of dudes in lower levels that don't lose much from being rubbed out for 12 weeks.

Phillip Read did plenty of that prior to this game but on this occasion came up against opposition already in the frame of mind to feed it back to him. Got his arse handed to him.

For sure! Read was one of those smartarse titches who was all bluff and when he tried that with a real tough guy like DK, he was done. Read toned down his mouth big time after that game.
