I got this after Smackdown 2 on the PS1 and oddly enough I actually prefer Smackdown 2 because it has a decent season mode and you don't have to worry about the 8-man matches and horrible "fuzziness" as the screen pans out. Jerry Lynn is in the game though which is pretty cool. Shut Your Mouth was a MASSIVE upgrade and season mode began with the draft. Here Comes the Pain was even better though and is easily the best PS2 WWE game. Smackdown vs Raw (2005) was pretty good but lacked the roster of HCTP and every subsequent title added a bit here and there while removing things as well. Smackdown vs Raw 2007 for instance felt like a Madden game and was the first title that began the current trend but the last title that had great arcade-y gameplay (minus the stamina mechanics). 2008, 2009, and 2010 were all massive downgrades despite the inclusion of ECW wrestlers and pretty much every WWE title until 2k19 was mediocre at best. HCTP was and is tied for first with No Mercy for me, No Mercy has the best season mode but HCTP has the best roster, graphics that have aged remarkably well for being 20 years old, and the match types are all any wrestling fan could ever ask for. Then you have the experience points and stats and it almost feels like a borderline RPG.

Such a massive improvement over Just Bring It. An amazing Season Mode, a fully stacked roster, and a ton of unlockables, not to mention amazing backstage areas. Everyone always talks about HCTP and rightfully so, but SYM needs to be held to the same regard. I think it's also important to mention the models as well. Everyone, if not almost everyone looks amazing in this game, some still do to this day. Like take Hollywood Hogan for example: they nailed how exactly he looked during this time period, right down to the little details from the winkles on his face to the sagging old man pecs. It's amazing how SYM's model of Hogan is still leagues better than the 2002 Hogan models that 2k has put out.

spent so much time with this game! The career mode was amazing at the time and as we didn't have wrestling on TV here until late 2001 or early 2002, a lot of the lore was taught to me by the game with it's storylines that were nicked straight from real life. And while you would have a hard time making a good looking normal person in CAW mode, making monsters was such a good time and there were a lot of parts you only needed to slap onto the default model to make certain characters like Spider-Man and Darth Maul. Very good time and loved watching the footage you gathered. Such a cool time.

The most realistic looking WWE game on ps2, even more so than SVR 06 in some ways. It's because the way the character models are textured and lit that gives it this oddly realistic look. Genuinely holds up even today.

I remember spending an entire play session trying to get two championships on Chris Jericho because I wanted to know whether he would have a Title entrance like he had with his Undisputed Title run. Where he would start on stage with his back to the arena like he normally did for entrances, but he would hold one belt out on his left, and the other to his right. I don’t think he had this title entrance, but there was just this wonderful sense of discovery with these old games. Perhaps there still is to this day, and I’m just not a kid anymore! Great review. You captured my exact experience with seeing SD Shut Your Mouth in a GAME store. The monitors were right at the front of the store, and I stood outside the store watching the big screen in awe. I pleaded for a PS2 that year and luckily a couple months later I got one for Christmas. FYI they don’t have those tv screens in any GAME stores local to me anymore.

Small note about this game, and the next one, I wish they'd kept the sell animations, for certain moves, for example, Goldberg's spear, The Stunner, The Pedigree, to name a few. The glorious, almost overselling made the moves look even more impactful. The Pedigree used the have the guy bounce up and sell his face, before sprawling out. Fast forward to the current games, they just plop face down and lay there, like they're taking a comfortable nap, and Hunter has to turn them over and just pin them. Same with the stunner. Just roll aside, lay there, no selling. Just a little bland. Glad you're covering this. I'd start this game, Friday afternoons, once school let out, and wouldn't fully be done, until Sunday evening, when I first got it. Take breaks to eat, sleep, wash myself, etc, and then back on. Love all your work. Feel better soon.
