This is the kind of young person I always hired on sight. Attitude... Work Ethic... Intelligence.. You could train this guy to do anything. My field was computers but I believe the principle is universal. It is also so very much fun to see them fly from the nest. I would train my young people in a specific niche of computer support and then help them expand. At some point they would leave my (2 X minimum wage) job and enter a responsible position with an enterprise sized corporation for twice the salary (4 X minimum wage). We would all celebrate and I could always assure the clients who were loosing their primary IT technician that I had other very capable and motivated young people to fill in. There is a lot more joy in growing and launching young people than the "happiness" of the income flow from them while with the company.

So Greg a question. David and you have mentioned the work it takes to raise pastured chickens. Would it be feasible if a chicken operator paid you to run their chickens behind the cows? Similarly what if grain farmers paid grazers to run cattle on their crop land? Farmers of all kinds don't need to do it all if they can create business transactions among themselves wouldn't that be easier?
@gregjudyregenerativerancher2 жыл бұрын
That arrangement would work fine as a long as each party was in agreement
@dertythegrower2 жыл бұрын
Sounds legit like a plan.. the issue would be for the plants to retrieve nutrients evenly as animals do not distribute the required minerals evenly to crop land. Grass is less requirements than corn or hemp or peppers. You would need to use multiple chicken and cow compost tea sprays still to upkeep deficiencies after flowering started..

Ha.. trust me his state is not on that big..yet. Kentucky and Oregon are the top states doing hemp fields since 2018. I planted many acres in Oregon the last few years (tomato plastic rows, many acre) It grows slowly but animals do love it... very healthy plant for immune system, especially the infamous cbgwhite cultivar. It grows too slow. I grew commercially in many states, indoor warehouses and outdoor (see profilespic) for pretty big herb corporations, run by ex speaker of the house Boehner.. at my feet is a dozen clones as i type this 😅
@dertythegrower2 жыл бұрын
Also the seed prices right now would make it hard to start huge fields.. so most operations make clones off mother plants to save on seed cost

@@gregjudyregenerativerancher At 6:40 in the video you said you'll put his email into the description, but it is't there. I don't even want his email, I just mentioned it to help you improve. No offense meant. I know you're not an IT pro, but I am. Adding the full email (or a working link) is a tiny bit of extra work for you and a tiny bit of extra convenience for everybody who wants to use it, in this case 8 per day. Now do the math ... I really like your videos where you interview some other reg ag guy at a fair or such. Or the students in your grazing school. Let's assume 5 % of your nearly 100k subscribers would like to follow the link those guys spell out, but do not take notes coz you said it's in the description. What will they do? Watch the video to the end, go to the description, find out the link isn't there, rewatch the video to the point where they spell it and type it in. Let's assume that process takes them 5 minutes. Times 4800 viewers means 400 hours of 'wasted' time. Or 50 workdays. Just for forgetting to put the link into the description.

He's totally wrong in regards to chickens! A background in chickens, yet he doesn't understand! No, chickens are not ruminant animals, however, their manure is WAY better than any ruminant manure, for not only plants, but GRASS, and LAND! My goodness, to say "I'm a farmer of grass/land", but saying chickens aren't the way to go... Sheesh! And I would throw pigs in that mix to a certain extent. You want a silvopasture? What better animal to use to go in and clear the land completely from under the trees so grass can be planted?
@gregjudyregenerativerancher2 жыл бұрын
Every body has a right to their own opinion, chickens are not David’s passion. He stated his passion is ruminant animals, if you want to raise chickens then knock a home run with them!!!!
@georgeheller22812 жыл бұрын
He said chickens are dependent on grain, wich limits you.
@Dashr442 жыл бұрын
Chickens are not limited to grain. They feed on many things. When they roam freely, they aren't just pecking the ground to just be pecking. They're eating bugs and other vegetation. "Limited". LoL
@georgeheller22812 жыл бұрын
@@Dashr44 I have chickens of my own, they require grain to keep them alive, they do not get enough from just pecking and foraging. There's no forage or food for chickens when it is -40 outside, they need grain to make the winter.

I have no clue, but I suspect there are not so many jobs available for someone like David. So why not go for the real thing and get your own farm? Not enough money? Ever heard of crowd funding? If Greg would call for funding a new project, I bet he would get more money than needed. A young passionate guy with the option of calling Greg for advive any time is almost as good. At least I'd be willig to fund him. And there are nearly 100k subscribers on this channel. So Greg, how much money would be needed to start a sustainable grazing business for someone like David (with the ability to pay back the funding over time)?
@gregjudyregenerativerancher2 жыл бұрын
David will have more job opportunities than you can shake a stick at! In 8 hours I have had 8 folks wanting to talk to him. At this rate he will have no trouble finding the right farm to fit him.
@andreasherzog22222 жыл бұрын
@@gregjudyregenerativerancher I'm really glad to hear that :) I was under the impression (from various channels on YT) that everybody except Gabe, Joel and you is running his farm as a family business, where employees are not an option. Anyway, beeing an employee is one thing, running your own farm is another. If you are able to be responsible for completely running the farm of a landowner, you should also be able to run your own. I have only watched your every video for the past ~2 years, including the 'getting started' series. You rarely talk about money. Your own history of starting it (working 9 to 5, grazing in the morning and at night) is safe, but the hardest possible way to do it. Or did I miss an earlier video with a different strategy? I know you recommend starting slowly with cows and maybe with just steers because of the learning curve. But someone like David has already been through a big part of that curve. So what would a 'jump start' for him look like? How many acres, cows are needed to make a living? How much capital for lease, perimeter fence, polybraid and whatnot? I know, 'it depends'. I bet many of your viewers would be willing to contribute to the capital needed for a farm "run by David, still occasionally coached by Greg". And many more would appreciate videos about such scenarios.
