Beginner bass player here. Loved hearing about the toys you used to find your tone for the band. Makes me want to try some with my rig. Also liked how you explained your thought process. I use a Sans Amp Bass Driver, a TC Electronic Spectra Comp with my Sterling by Music Man short scale bass which has a passive a single humbucker pup, a 3 way rotary to select single coil, series or parallel pup options, a passive boost and Ernie Ball regular slinky 45-105. I choose a shorty b/c I have issues with my hand tendons and the shorty is more comfortable.

I always love seeing other bassists working out a pedalboard signal chain. I have the SCR-DI that lives as the last thing in my chain. I'm using the Orange Kongpressor right after my tuner for compression. My "home" board has fuzz, octave, a B9 Organ synth, and a chorus pedal on it. The one I carry to band practice, though, is just the tuner, the compressor, and the SCR-DI. I played one of the new Squier Jaguar H medium scale basses and I've fallen in love with it. It has the same pick-up configuration and placement as my G&L at about half the weight. It's going to be my next purchase as soon as Sam Ash down near the Galleria gets it in for me. I really liked the video and the way you went about it. It was fun seeing someone else who went "Hey, I'll just build a board to put my pedals on," which was what I did for my first one. As for what I'd add to your board, the only thing I'd consider is something to give you a little grit. Although for playing with Noah, I'm not sure you need it on bass. So as much as I love my SCR-DI, I think you made the right call going with a different pre-amp for this particular set-up.

A guitarist here. I play bass (as a guitarist...😀) I just acquired a Jazz bass copy but I didn't realise that it had active pick-ups...I really don't dig them. Is it a relatively simple job to go passive, or do I need a new set of pick-ups ? Really enjoying your ideas about inspiration with your "mini songs". Hi Phil! Great name :) replacing your pickups and rewiring is not as scary as it sounds; you just need a basic soldering kit and some time and patience. And changing pickups can make a huge difference on your sound. Some pickups can be used as passive or active, but I’d consider replacing them with some good designated passive pickups (Fralin, Lollar are good options). @@heartofoak4503 good question. It’s a lingering hand injury from a few years back that still haunts me some times. Me not being there on the recent gigs is due to a scheduling conflict; when I am not playing bass I work on movie sets as a boom operator capturing dialogue. I was right in the middle of a big film project and had to ask my friend Kelly to fill in for some Noah shows so I could complete my responsibilities on set. I enjoy working in both the music and film industry :)

Thanks so much Richard! I’ve thought about sharing about my injury and recovery process at some point if it is helpful to people. I think an injury of some sort is something a lot of musicians face at some point and it can be really hard because it can effect us very deeply. I’ll spare the details for now, but in short I twisted my left thumb around pretty severely so I have lost a lot of the strength in my left hand. I cannot play for as long or with as much technical proficiency as I once could. Because of this, I’ve had to rethink a lot of things in my playing and my life. This experience/ journey is something I may share when the time is right if it would be helpful… Thanks Richard!

Great video Phil. Like others, I came from Rhett's channel. I've really enjoyed your playing on Noah's songs. I love to play bass in addition to guitar and in my own band, I sometimes cover bass when my bassist plays keys. Interested in tips from a pro like yourself. I recently changed the pickup height on a Gretsch guitar that I love the look of but wasn't loving the sound of. Huge effect on the sound & output with only a few turns off a screw. I need to experiment more but chasing tone is part of the fun. Keep this going. It will grow.

Even though I am a whole year late to the party I thought I would contribute some thoughts anyway. Even though this is all online I enjoyed hanging out. It’s always nice to hear the thoughts of a fellow bass player. I think you do a good job of putting videos together that feel like a relaxed place for fellow bassists to listen and chat. With regard to pedals I have always pretty much avoided them completely. I just prefer the simplicity of plugging a guitar or bass into an amp, and keeping things simple. My amp is a TC Electronic RH450 and it is pretty much a one stop shop - flexible EQ, tube amp simulation (which I don’t often use), built-in tuner and spectra comp which works really well. I have D’Addario tape wounds on two of my basses and D’Addario chromes on the third bass. Whilst round wounds can sound nice I overall prefer the smooth feel, mellow tone and lack of noise that comes with flat/tape wound strings. I enjoy your channel - keep the good work up!

I'm currently playinga few gigs in a small church with my brother. When we drive there, we have to take his drumset and because of that, there's usually not much space for a bass amp... The question is: Would you suggest a DI-Pedal (we got a mixing table and DI-Boxes) and if you do, which one? Btw, love the channel already. Found you through Rhett Shull and his gig vlogs and now that I switched from guitar to bass as my main instrument, your channel will be really helpful! Keep it up!

There are a lot of great ones, it depends on if you want it to just pass a clean signal or if you want to use it to color/change your sound. I’ve been following Rhett for a while as I still play guitar a bit, but my first instrument is bass and, having seen you in his videos, I’ve been following you on Instagram and now YT makes it a complete package - good stuff! I’ve also been using a JMJ since February and absolutely love it and the whole short scale feel. I’m considering adding another Mustang pickup in the bridge and changing the neck plate to allow for some contouring on the heel, but I haven’t committed to having the work done yet.

Great video! I would probably add another stage of gain, either another lower gain to stack with the boost or maybe even some all out fuzz for when that might be fun. I use the Strymon Deco on the saturation side for my basic low gain and then add on the Zvex Basstortion for more of an Ampeg grind. Maybe the Ampeg Scrambler from the same series as the chorus and comp? I do think the Compadre coupled with the Deco would be a heavenly combo, but it’s a bit more real estate and quite a bit more $ 😊. Also interesting to hear your take on pushing the JDI. Seems obvious that the transformer will ”give” more if you push it, I just seem to think of it as a ”clean DI”. Might have to try that! Keep the videos coming!

Thanks Sean! That’s a great idea. Yes agreed, very subtle. This was a sort of “always on” sound I was going for, where it’s just barely noticeable but there to help sit in the mix a bit better. I do also like to use more noticeable sort of effects sometimes. But I also go through phases where I like to keep my tone pretty clean and not change it a lot song to song. It just depends on the context for me. That’s a cool idea to talk more in depth about this in the future!

On the subject of sticky necks, and in the context of not playing actual gigs. All my basses have gloss necks (not on purpose). I found out I had a death grip on the neck and i really feel like it made me adapt in a positive way. Then I accidentally discovered if I put a drop of Bartenders Friend (a cleaning product) on my thumb it made the gloss necks easy to glide on.

Cool seeing you do videos! I like the choice of pedals alot, only thing I'd do different is putting the power supply on the underside of the board, by putting triangle blocks underneath first to give the board an angle (this is actually gonna make it easier to click on pedals, to boot)

I do the same kind of experimenting in all the details down to what cables i use on pedals. I have 3 basses and use a different eQ pedal for each one on the same board with the same empress compressor but really keep it pretty simple. its eq and compression to get punch out of flatwounds and roundwounds. I think you picked the right pedals and Im fond of ampeg scr and their chorus. Flatwounds over tapewounds. Would be good to follow this up with some live recordings of the band or video. Thx

You have lots of good pedals there. I don’t use a board because I only use two pedals for bass but a small board is a good thing. I had a Fender Mustang guitar in 1970. I guess the Mustang Bass is short scale.

I recently changed to tape wounds from round wounds on my short scale bass just to try them out. I like them a lot. Of course this is a great example of how different things work or don't work for different people. This was a nice video and helpful in terms of hearing the outcomes of your changes, which are probably curiosities to many players who might not be as motivated to change their instruments because of costs, time, or other reasons. I'm a bit new to bass, having been a guitar player for decades. I picked a bass up because I want to make my own backing tracks for lap steel instrumentals I put up on YT. A short scale made sense to me not only for the feel but also because I have broken bones in both thumbs (mountain biking injuries) that limit my grip strength a bit. My hand injuries and their outcomes are here to stay so the short scale choice really worked in that regard. You've mentioned your hand injury and I'm curious about that and how you've overcome issues if they are still with you.

I play a jazz bc of the thinner neck and narrower nut as I've had two serious hand injuries over the past few years that just like hurt all the time so it's easier than my precision but maaannnn i love a mustang. Basically chopped the end of my dominant thumb off a few years back and have debilitating trigger finger in 3 fingers (both hands) from old injuries. My playing style has actually changed a lot over the years from compensating. Anything that improves comfort is a major focus for me right now. Thanks in advance

Yes. I can deeply relate, and feel for you! It’s so difficult to not be able to play like you want to because of an injury. I am sorry you are dealing with that. I am actually working on a video about short scale basses right now, so stay tuned. But in short: notes are closer together so less stretching/strength required to stretch, and less tension because of short strings makes it easier to hold the strings down. Less fatiguing. It has been a game changer for me, and they are also pretty affordable. Good luck, I hope you find a way to express yourself musically even in light of these injuries!

Loved it - a great first video, coming to you from a mediocre bass player here in the UK! I’d say keep making videos on the things that excite you and it’ll be great to see content like you’ve suggested that touches on different areas from bass, to arrangements, to your own experiences and learnings in the studio and live. If I had one question, I’d love to hear more about Little Fish - the JMJs are in short supply in the UK but I REALLY want to get my hands on one. Would love to know how the sound compares between a standard scale P versus the short scale JMJ, both with flats. Not just in isolation but your thoughts on how the JMJ sits in a band mix like when you’re playing with Noah Guthrie - I always worry that by using a short scale I’d be losing / missing bottom end that I get from my P, but on the flip side they always sound super punchy in the other YT vids I’ve seen Keep it up!

Hi Matt! Thanks for being here at the beginning and taking the time to share your thoughts. It’s very much appreciated! I know it’s late over there too, so thanks for staying up to watch. JMJs are hard to come by here too. I had to order mine to even try one; nowhere had one in stock. But I fell in love from the start, minus the pickup height issue I mentioned which was easily resolved. Yes, a short-scale comparison video is absolutely something I plan to talk about. But in short, I don’t believe you are losing anything, I think it’s actually more bass and more top end, it feels a bit scooped. And the through-body design gives you lots of sustain. I think rounds on a mustang are a bit harsh but flats are just perfect and smoothes it out a bit. I tried it because of my injury but now I genuinely love it for its sound. Stay tuned, I hope to talk more about this sooner than later…

Cool. Only discovered your channel today. While I am a bit pedal crazy I do believe a pedal has to contribute and just there for no reason. I do recommend a volume pedal. Love hitting a note before the beat, vol at 0 and sweeping it in. Great for adding presence and reinforcing stuff before the bass kicks in properly. But it’s what works best for you

I love the videos. I am really a amateur bass player that plays locally here in Texas. I would love to hear more about how you change over time. For example, playing the same songs the same way can get a little boring, how do you change it to keep you entertained.

Hi Jesse! That’s a great question that should maybe be it’s own video at some point. I think for me, it’s all about listening. Listen to the other band members and then try and play whatever makes the song sound the best it can, which may be different from the album. It’s ok to change things a bit as long as you stay in the spirit of the song, but only changing things to serve the music and not ourselves. I’m so happy you are here and thank you for your comment!

Great tone with an uncomplicated setup. Great video - would just like to hear more tones from your bass. I favor a more intricate setup to maximize control on my end in case the bass just does not sound good in the room, though I really dig your small pedalboard. If I can't get my bass to sound good to my ears it's so hard to play well.

Great video! My bass board is a Dr. Scientist Elements (overdrive/distortion/EQ), Union T&T LAB (compressor), Union T&T SUB BUZZ (parallel fuzz and clean boost), JAM Ripply Falls (chorus/vibrato/phaser), and a Polytune 3 tuner. It's everything I need, though it feels strange coming from playing guitar not to have delay and reverb. What a your thoughts on delay and reverb for bassists? I'd recommend adding some sort of modulation to your rig, but I imagine Rhett has all of those textures covered haha.

Can you do a topic about getting a good live sound? I understand you have to adjust for the room and there is no tried and true EQ settings as a result. Which is low-key kinda scary to think about, but also exciting because its unexpected and new. You really have to trust your ears. I haven't played many gigs with a sound person so I'm more so asking for gigs at a bar or where you are very reliant on your own gear. Great videos btw! The editing style really makes these captivating.

You probably don't need it because of the style you are playing, but I'd consider an OC-5 (just because I don't have an OC-2 or 3) octave pedal, and I'd put the compressor immediately after the tuner ... but that's just me.

Philip!!! This is going to be a huge channel, please keep it up. I'm a guitar player who added bass. I have a Fender USA Mustang that I use to build my backing tracks. I'm a hobbiest, but my main stay is trio. EZ Drummer, me on bass, and then singing guitar player soul-blues. I run flat wounds. I'm able to get decent tones DI to my daw, I like to run it to 2 channels with one on 100% wet with a slap back delay. Here's my question. Can you recommend a preamp pedal for old soul-blues tones? From it I might run into a Strymon Deco for stereo with a touch of slap back. My live playing platform is a pair of Bose L1Pro8s with an 8 channel Bose mixer. Thanks

Hi Jim! Thanks for the kind words. I’m so glad you are here! It sounds like you may benefit from a juicy tube DI. Something like the REDDI or the Noble, or maybe the JHS color box or a subtle boost pedal. Even a mic preamp like a 610 or the groove tubes brick.
