This scene is depicted wrong, Akira want to live for Tomoe. He would not get up to do suicidal attacks on Kenshin if he were to left by Kenshin as in this scene. In anime OVA, he was forced to fight for his life, since Kenshin would not go away just because he fall on the ground and confirm the kill.

This is the last part of the movie. It was released at the last to show the reasoning behind Kenshin's change and why Enishi wanted revenge. This was released at the last for the purpose to answer every questions fan had. The beginning was the end of Battosai and the rise of a Kind Samurai who we saw in 4 movies before this.
