We're moving quick through the Caribbean as we make our way north to Miami. In this video we skate in Puerto Rico, explore Turks & Caicos and get sea sick on our sail to mayaguana. This was a fun video to make and I can't wait to edit the rest of the trip:)

Secret seasickness trick from a former US Navy submarine sailor. Seasickness (motion sickness) was never really an issue while we were submerged since we were usually deep enough to not feel the effects of the waves on the surface. And when we did, we'd just go a little deeper to try to get under it just like an airplane will change altitude looking for smooth air when it encounters turbulence. But on the surface... a whole different story. With a submarine hull being round and with the way a wave's energy moves, the slightest sea state could easily be felt. Anyway, if you go outside or somewhere so you can see the horizon, you're likely not to get seasick. Seasickness is caused by a mismatch between visual cues and vestibular cues to the brain about the body's spatial orientation. If your eyes are telling the brain one thing and the inner ear is telling it something different, seasickness is likely. So when your inner ear is sensing the motion of the ocean but the eyes aren't seeing it - mismatch = motion sickness. Being where you're eyes can see the movement relative to the horizon, the eyes are sensing the motion of the ocean the same as the inner ear is sensing it - messages match = motion sickness unlikely. When you're in a cabin, your eyes really aren't getting full visual cues, since you're not really seeing the motion like you would compared against the horizon. Anyway... try it. You'll be surprised. I'll be curious to see if you feel any difference.

I don't get seasickness, having grown up on the water in the NE. However I do agree with the former sub-sailor's assessment about conflicting sensory data to the brain being a probable cause. What you call sea sickness I call vertigo and that is when you focus on one thing and the background is moving. It is best to focus on one thing then focus on something else that should help. There are patches you stick behind your ear and that helps a lot. Turks Island reminds me of my winter home in the Cayman Islands.

For most it is a matter of exposure, how long and how frequent that you do something. My issue is with lots of movement, motion sickness. Some would say that sea sickness is motion sickness, it is one type of motion sickness. Like being car sick, which was terrible for me as a child. Like with being car sick, and with many other forms of motion sickness, I learned that I had to change my point of focus regularly. Look close a while, look long distance a while, long medium distance a while. If we focus close for a while our inner ear, our balance mechanism, tells us that we are sitting still while the rest of our body tells us that we're moving. It's the conflict of inputs that gets us. Look at the screen a few minutes, then look away for a few minutes. Back and forth. It keeps the inputs variable which helps with the motion sickness, in your case sea sickness. I used to have it flying. That was a bummer because I love to fly. Grew out of that though. Remember that also, you can simply grow out of it. Our sensitivity changes with time.

My uncle has a 160 foot yacht and a sail boat and I only get sea sick on the sail boat. I think it is the constant movement of the boat from the engines that keep me from getting sick plus the boat floats a lot higher than the sail boat making the horizon look different.

I went on a 8 hour deep sea fishing trip with a group, they said you might feel a little queasy so bring some ginger snap cookies just in case. Hey, I will NEVER do that again. My head was banging so bad, my stomach so upset, I stayed inside the cabin the entire time except to go outside to throw up over the rails. I was so sick I couldn't even crawl over to the ginger snap cookies, wasn't worth it. Horrible experience. That said, excellent video Luke, keep it up!

Intubate is correct. Was going to suggest when editing on passage, go out in the cockpit facing straight off the stern with your laptop facing you. Do some editing and every few minutes, pick your head up and look at the horizon for a couple. When staring at something stationary on the boat, it’s not moving but your inner ear/s is sensing the motion of the boat rocking. I spent 35 years on the water. I was lucky and never was sea sick. (Woohoo) Let us know if things change for you under way.

Sea sickness is more of a mental/visual confusion… If you are not getting seasick during the days that you do not edit video on a computer screen then that should tell you quite a bit about your struggle as far as how to combat it. I know that it is difficult to do editing in short productive burst - a few minutes here and then a half an hour break and another few minutes- however breaking it up and shortening the actual screen time will probably start to work for you. Editing is a creative flow that once you get going it's hard to leave and then pick back up again later with the same feel… Primarily because the creative workflow is more emotional than it is actual and so it makes it more difficult to break it up. Unless you have created some kind of storyboard. Just take notes and leave the screen...go watch the waves and return later. I have a feeling you will be able to conquer seasickness eventually. I will tell you one thing right now ...this video is excellent in every way - the music cues, the videography, and your own personal story of your dilemma with seasickness make this truly a wonderful and touching video to watch.
