The three quotes that stand out to me the most in this short: "What for you bury me in the cold, cold ground?", "Flattery will get you nowhere." and "I now pronounce you Devil and Devilish." The deadpan nasally delivery on the first two lines by Mel Blanc is comedic gold. And something about that last line is supremely amusing given the boorish nature of these two Tasmanian Devils.

Sadly, Taz wouldn’t return until 3 years later in Bedeviled Rabbit because the Warner Brothers animation producer/head at the time Edward Selzer (a notorious wet blanket) insisted on shelving Taz because he thought he was was too violent. Thankfully, Jack Warner, the president of the Warner Bros. Studio, noticed Taz’s disappearance and insisted that Taz be brought back as he was actually quite popular with audiences.

It just shows that Sid Marcus can write good shorts like this one in additional to his time as director at Columbia (via Screen Gems animation studio) Lantz and DePatie Freleng. Both he and Art Davis who at this point was at Friz's unit as a animator would work together on and off for years at the studios thst both worked together. Sid was good with Robert McKimson as well who also was at DePatie Freleng eventually as well. Solid short and impressive debut for Taz.

Robert McKimson has usually been the unsung hero of Looney Tunes, and a creative genius in his own right with Foghorn Leghorn, Speedy Gonzales, & of course The Tasmanian Devil, aka TAZ
@TheEman590Сағат бұрын
He was a great animator for the Bob Clampett cartoons and had a great string of shorts as a director from 1946 to 1954 before they downsized his animation unit. Bob is just as integral to Looney Tunes as Jones, Avery and Friz
@l-wolverine2211Сағат бұрын
@@TheEman590 Except Bob Clampett was very difficult to work with, and even tried to take credit for being the sole creator of Bugs Bunny. This was one of the reasons why he was fired back then, because none of them could stand working with Bob Clampett. Btw, don’t confuse Robert McKimson with his Animator brother Charles McKimson, who also hated working with Bob Clampett.
@Bundy532 минут бұрын
@@TheEman590he also lost Warren Foster from about 1950 onwards (Foster went to Freleng's unit) and got the unit drunk Tedd Pierce whose work was very inconsistent. The quality of his shorts then suffered. But he had a bit of a renaissance period after the strike of 54 I believe and started working again with other writers (although the majority still was with Tedd). The Devil may hare was actually written by Sid Marcus who he had success with in 1954 and 1955 with no parking hare and with the hole idea shorts. If it wasn't for Freleng snatching Foster who knows what legacy we would be looking at for Mckinson but he always had to be satisfied with the last of the quality because he was the final main director Warners hired.
@TheEman59026 минут бұрын
@Bundy5 So I've heard. Every time Eddie Seltzer, the producer after Leon Slechenger, complained or said something wasn't funny, the Looney Tunes directors said, "Well, he hasn't been right so far." None of them knew what a Tasmanian Devil was either and, just like Bugs and Daffy in the shorts, looked it up in a book. Little did they know how popular Taz would become
