Michigan J. Frog is one of my favorite characters. I always thought he was having stage fright. I was shy growing up, but would always audition for my school plays, but get really nervous and one time got stage fright and forgot my lines. I have since grown out of that phase. I know that there was a parody made, but with an Alien in Spaceballs and it was just as phenomenal as watching my favorite frog (sorry Kermit). Thank you so much for all the insight and connect. Love your channels.

For me, it's a message... or perhaps, a warning... of what happens when a person chases after fame. There are those in the world who could probably "make it big on Broadway", but prefer a quiet life. We're conditioned to believe, I think, that talent is a possession to be sold in exchange for money. Eras come and go, but talent survives.

Great observation! To add to this, the main character is trying to profit off of someone else’s talent. The frog is clearly intelligent and uninterested in these ventures. He just wants to sing for the sake of it!

I loved this cartoon, as a kid! I can view it now as a morality tale. The frog is trying to be exploited by greed. Once this happens, the owner of the frog falls on bad times and is destitute.

Good observation... I had the same sort of feeling about it.. I believe that back in the day, the producers tried to write cartoons in such a way that both kids and adults would see value in them. Remember, cartoons were not initially written for TV kid shows.. they were shown in theaters before the feature films.... certainly a predominately adult audience.

My son’s all time favourite, these led him to go to Sheridan College, Ontario, Canada, to learn to be an animator and succeeded, then went to British Columbia, Canada in that field for about ten years. He then was hired to work in Toronto, Ontario. That was a long time ago - as he is 54 now! How time flies!

Rick - did you know that there's a SEQUEL??! Released in 1995, it's called "Another Froggy Evening". For fans of "Michigan J. Frog" it is an absolute must-see!! There are several videos available on KZbin. But - a word of warning : the shorter version at 8:36 is higher quality than the 8:47 version, but it is slightly edited! You may want to see both. And one last word : Michigan is based on legendary old-time entertainer and songwriter Joe Howard. He actually wrote "Hello Ma Baby" along with other famous songs. You can see him here, well into his eighties, performing on Ed Sullivan's program back in the '50's. He's complete with top hat and a cane! You can tell how beloved he was by the applause. Here's a link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d2OypKJuZ7R4lZI

When you watch any cartoon from that era as an adult, you realize they actually aren't really for children. They're not inappropriate by any means, but there are so many jokes and nuances that children don't understand, you have to assume they were written for adults. But kids can enjoy them too for the silliness and bright colors.

Definitely a favorite as a kid in the late 60's and re-viewing them now I can see how adult they often were with sometimes deep undertones. As a child we just don't see it because we enjoy the comic entertainment value which is all we were looking for. I really like these deep dives Rick, appreciate it!

I always thought the frog didn't want to sing for money or even in public for free because he just wanted to do it for the owner. But I also thought he knew the owner wanted to make money off him. He couldn't even just do it once because then he'd be expected to do it again or he'd get kidnapped or something. So even when he saw that the guy was going broke and was put in the psych hospital he pretty much I think on purpose at least by then wouldn't sing in public. I always had a feeling the frog knew he would have been used if he let the owner do it and the frog was sort of a smart aleck. Like the kid that was offered 50¢ in hand and $1 in the other and he always took the 50¢ Somebody asked him why and he said that if he took the dollar that would be the last time he would be offered. But he kept getting 50¢ because they thought he was dumb. Then he'd keep being offered. It is a classic and it's hilarious.

Undoubtedly my favorite cartoon of all time. One thing nobody ever seems to comment on. Yes, the frog doesn't sing when others are present. But didn't anybody notice that the frog ALWAYS completes his song? He never cuts the song off, he always finishes the song - it just happens right before somebody else shows up. That is why maybe the first time you watch it, it is absolutely frustrating, but on the second and subsequent viewings, it's only more hilarious because now we know that frog ain't going to sing for anybody else. He is the only cartoon character in which I collected things. My mom got me a Michigan J. Frog stuff animal, and I had a Michigan J. Frog keyring, and of course a T-shirt. And to this day it's still my favorite cartoon.

I have a theory, from a Ub Iwerk biography on youtube--that "Michigan J. Frog" is actually an Ub Iwerks creation (post Disney), named Flip the Frog. In fact, the later cartoons Flip the Frog cartoons had a resemblance to Michigan J. Frog. But Flip the Frog was a commercial failure. Having lost his studio, Ub Iwerks returned to work for Walt Disney. It's possible the man with mustache is a representation of a middle-aged Ub Iwerks. Incidently, Chuck Jones was young artist working at Iwerk's studio, so he could've been telling Iwerk's sad story. But this is all juat a theory based on a biography. Nothing concrete.
