Uliana Lopatkina is probably one of my ultimate favorite ballerinas. Everything about her is perfect, and I have never seen a dancer who moves and feels through every inch of her body the way she does.

Being taller works to her advantage. Her lines are more dramatic and graceful. She's absolutely elegant and magnificent to watch.

I could also say that I know more people happy that they parents forced them to learn something in childhood than people who are damaged because of it, and I know some people who are unhappy and complain that they parents didn't give them chance to do something (like one of my friends who is convinced she would be professional musician if only parents send her to music school at right age).

I read this about her in Wikipedia: "...drinks a glass of grapefruit juice or a cup of tea for breakfast... She often skips lunch... After performing she can eat a kilo of grapes or drink a liter of grapefruit juice... drinks Russian kefir with a biscuit before going to bed. She might be a great ballerina, but she's starving her body to death!

Parents' decision of giving children carefree childhood can be as harmful as forcing them to do what they, at this stage of life, think they don't want to do. There isn't such a thing like one good way, one child "forced" to ballet will be happy adult, the other will be unhappy. It's parents' decision and parents' responsibility and people who care so much about childern sent to ballet school should just deal with it.

In some places it isn't seen as perverse especially if the person isn't developed yet. In this case they want to see how the girls are developing to judge what their body lines might do in the future. Also because it is a boarding school it's basically a physical so they can put on their medical records and the notes home that the children are healthy and their muscles and bones are growing properly plus they don't have scoliosis or and bruises that could be a sign of something more serious.

@skbfamiliar There is a documentary on Netflix called "Ballerina" heres a summary, Filmmaker Bertrand Normand's fascinating documentary profiles five outstanding Russian ballerinas from the prestigious Mariinsky Theatre (Kirov), following them from grueling rehearsals to flawless performances around the globe. Dancers in the spotlight include gifted 18-year-old Alina Somova, the newest Mariinsky ballerina, along with Svetlana Zakharova, Evguenya Obraztsova, Diana Vishneva and Uliana Lopatkina.

the mariinsky does not have a "prima ballerina." that is an out-dated term. I do not know of any company with a prima ballerina. lopatkina and alina somova and nine others are formally identified as "principals" on the mariinsky website. check it out.
@ibkod10 жыл бұрын
Principles are primas. Educate yourself by watching some documentaries. The heads of both the Bolshoi and Mariinsky as well as all the company dancers still refer to their star principles as primas.

ZAIRE. in classical ballet education, semi-nude children are ubiquitous. that's part of the education. the training is hands-on, as well. perhaps some find it offensive. KATHERINE, below, explains this better than I do.

@YouGoOutBruiseYellow13 жыл бұрын
@TheHoliday555 i'm sort of as clueless as you but i think it might have to do with the fact that the girls auditioning are around ten years old, so a factor may be developing breasts, since ballerinas are usually flat chested, since breasts flopping around on stage would be unsightly for such a strict and graceful art. and maybe parents trying to get their daughters in may try to bind their daughter's chest?

@katievhoneychurch she's probably frustrated, as she is still recovering from ankle surgery and has not danced for the past 3 years!...but she does look quite pale and a little weak in this video. Hopefully she gets better because she really is on of the best Odettes I have ever seen!

Vaganova Acdemy admits girls at the age of 10, not after, and it's probably so it's easier to try and guess what they'll develop into much later (if you watch the documentary Ballerina, it talks about how ideally ballerinas will be in a certain height range, have long necks, long arms and legs, small heads, and are quite thin--"It's hard to tell at age 10 what they will look like"). And anyway, they're prepubescent, so it doesn't really matter.

+Paulay K weird. i don't interpret my comment as sexul at all. if anything, these kids are being systematically objectified. have you ever worn a leotard? if you have, you know that skin-tight spandex is already PLENTY revealing. so then what is the actual point of this exercise, i wonder? are they so hard-core, that they require insight into the articulation of skin on bone? i remain unconvinced.
