Also can I mention I’ve been trying to call VCAT all week and after all the prompts I literally cannot get through! I cannot even get put on hold. I’m constantly being put through to a voicemail service that states you’ll only be called back if your matter fits certain criteria!

I agree! These problems are so easy to fix too if they actually wanted. Vic (for example), they introduced the min standards, but they still don't have a register or keep track of what properties are rentals even though they have access to this information. It was just an honour system where they assume the private industry would create the ability supply and manage the checks, and that landlord would do them, and tenants would report them when they don't. Then the govt employed someone to randomly call agencies asking for the min standards check for a select property advertised online, as if that was regulating the standards. All they need to do is update what is considered habitable for all new properties, apply this to all existing rentals, use an algorithm to cross reference RTBA & real estate listings, request all min standard proof within x period of time and then serve orders in all the ones that don't comply. They need to make it an offence for REAs to knowingly manage non-compliant properties too, currently they know but because they could lose the client, they're literally disincentivised from reporting them. They need to make it that REAs must report within maybe 30 days of the owner refusing to do compliance checks or repairs.

Please remember that to negative gearing a property, it only needs to be listed. It doesn't need to be occupied.

Also check out the reports about the amount of vacant properties that aren't "officially" vacant, which is found by essential utilities like water not being used at the property. I'm almost convinced this crisis is a manufactured farce to limit renters rights and for the idle class to squeeze as much money as possible out of working people.

Australia used to pride itself on having the title "the worker's paradise". That meant solidarity, compassion and hard fought for strength through unity. A pretty decent social democracy. It's weird how much Australia has changed. The Keating and Howard neoliberal governments really made inroads to push selfishness and division amongst the working classes. Couple that with the corporate news koolaid and this is what you get. Ignorance, fear, confusion and division. Furtile ground for fascism and in our times governments controlled by foreign corporations and self-interest. Feeding off the global south.

I have rental property in Brunswick West. I'm giving the renters 60 days notice & putting it up for sale. Not sure how they are going to find a new place to live in this time since they got a dog while living in my property.

Landlords can't discriminate on that basis, so I hope those tenants know to lie on their subsequent applications if that question is raised.

i thought landlords can't prevent a person from renting with a pet unless they have a reasonable purpose for doing so, and if they do have a reasonable purpose they have to make a request to VCAT for a refusal?

Yeah, but if you're a landlord and you've got two identical applications, however one of them owns a dog, which one are you more likely to accept? It's a pointless rule because there are so many ways around it.

@@sandohale86 the biggest issue is the fact (they think that) they're allowed to ask it on their application forms. It should be seen similarly to if they ask on the application if the tenant has a disability, what their religion is, what their ethnicity is, or which genders they have sex with. I want to see the whole application process totally anonymised, where the landlord is only entitled to knowing that the otherwise undescribed tenant passed the credit check and that they have no history of abusing the properties that they live in.
