The JDXA is a great deep synth, but it is a pain to program through the limited access menu system. I had one and sold it because it just sat in my studio gathering dust (and Roland ignored it after creating it - no computer sound editor which it badly needs). On the other hand, I have a Matrix Brute which gets a lot of my attention because it is so accessible! Two very different synths. I guess the question is, do you need a hybrid poly synth with a great vocoder, or an analogue mostly mono synth? Out of the two, the Matrix Brute is built like a tank whereas the JDXA is a lump of plastic.

Surely this is going to become a modern classic. A lot of time must have gone into the dev of the MatrixBrute. I love the places that this thing could take someone, even someone starting out. It's the kind of thing that a person could grow into. It's accessible and immediate - as you pointed out. But it's the kind of thing, that I think someone could sit in front of, and it would help creativity... some of the extra sound designer sets (produced as a free add on) are also amazing too. I wonder if something like the Moog One, is really worth 3.5 times more. Different markets I guess.

Wow ok yes I have to agree with the rest of the crowd here - this was the best demo and explanation of the Matrix Brute that I've seen. Twice in the past year I had gone into a Guitar Center and sat down in front of one of these, confidently believing I'd be able to coax some interesting sounds out of it. And twice I was proven wrong. So I lost interest. But after watching this, wow ok this actually looks quite powerful. The fact that they included a ladder filter is crucial, because the Arturia's Steiner-Parker filter does NOT do it for me. And of course, 3 voice paraphony is great. But most interesting is definitely, as everyone else is saying, the patch bay. Critical question - I'm assuming that it must do MIDI-to-CV for those outs to work when controlling the MB remotely (right?), but does it convert CV inputs from the patchbay into MIDI messages out? If every one of those CV ins produced a corresponding MIDI response that could be routed to a DAW, this would be almost be an insta-buy for me.
@loopop6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment... patch bay video coming... it does convert notes to cv but you can’t go the other way around. You can insert cv control to the oscillators but it won’t go ahead and convert that to midi
@WilliWerkel6 жыл бұрын
Dude I wonder what you'd show us if you had an Access Virus. I really like your Videos!
@BosseCory6 жыл бұрын
For anyone curious about the CV patch bay, here's a quick version: CV inputs send your signal straight to whatever parameter is on the label. You must attenuate before it goes in if you desire that, inputs do not pass through the patch bay. You can't modulate reassignable destinations. CV outputs send out whatever CV is already acting on a parameter, after attenuation and mixing. For example, if I wanna send out LFO1, I send it somewhere on the patchbay like VCO1 Metal, then take the CV output labelled VCO1 Metal. Sources can be mixed. (For pitch, it sends the 1V/oct signal that VCO is receiving, NOT the oscillator itself).

I have the Omnisphere... so what does this do exactly that the omnisphere doesn't?
@ThePCxbox3 жыл бұрын
Omnisphere is a sampler with granular synthesis. Omnisphere is like a multipurpose tool, it can act as a normal subtractive synthesizer or you can use more real sounds like a sampled piano. This is a true analog synth which the differences are kind of hard to explain if you arent into that kind of thing already. hardware synth sounds can probably be done is synths that you already own with very little difference. The main reason someone would buy this is for workflow purposes and just for fun. Also some hardware analog synths are investments that will grow in value once discontinued. For example I have a TD-3. There are plenty of vsts that emulate the original TB-03 for a very cheap price but i wanted hardware because tweaking knobs live and using the actual sequencer is a lot of fun.

I've played synths with "time-based" Glide (no matter the interval between the notes played, the time to reach the second note will always be the same) and I've played others with "frequency/time" Glide (the interval between played notes matters). So, I would like to know how Glide behaves in Matrixbrute. Thank you very much!

Can anyone tell me what is output from the 3 CV outs for each oscillator? Their names make it ambiguous. ‘VCO1 Metal’, ‘VCO2 PWM’ etc. I’m hoping they output the oscillator audio for each of the waves - equivalent to the oscillator outs on the Minibrute 2s. Or does it send the CV value of the associated knobs. I now that Matrixbrutes are getting cheaper on the used market, I’d love to get one and use its oscillators in a larger modular thing. To do it though, I’d need to be able to send audio for each oscillator discreetly to VCAs and envelopes.

Great video! I have few questions: (I assume that the analog effects modes are combined): 1) when the effects are combined (for example chorus, reverb and delay) can you change the order of which effects is processed first, second, etc? 2) when effects combined, would you be able to modify the parameters of (for example) JUST the Chorus using the Modulation matrix since it shares the same parameter knobs as the other effects? 3) it’s been four years since you made this video, do you still use the synth on a regular basis? Or as it has it lost its shine a bit, and if so, why (for example, have you discovered issues, or is it just take up too much room or take to long to setup, etc) Just curious. I am Really on the fence about buying one so I would really appreciate if you could give me an answer to the above… But in any case, great video and your style is really excellent and thorough…

Yes, a great stage synth yes, but for the studio no, for the price of the Brut, I could have all three of these synths: DeepMind12/Moog SubPhatty/Korg Minilog....which combined would give you 6 oscillators, a full keyboard MIDI control from the DeepMind, and most of all....polyphony.

"To me size is a disadvantage that needs to be justified"... really? I'd say the opposite... Being small is a disadvantage and needs to be justified. Having a small 24 key layout, with a single button, would make it the smallest/lightest thing ever. But guess what? You can't do anything with it except play 24 keys. Then someone would say "but you got that button, that one button lets you change what those keys do"... but then i'd say "but that means you have to hit that button every time you wanted to change something, and would have to hit it over and over and over and over just to get back to the beginning"... So no, size is not a disadvantage. Size is an insane advantage, since you can do more with what is infront of you. You have more capability, more opportunities. Weight on the other hand is a disadvantage, but you can have a decent size, with a decent weight. But you can't have functionality with something small, when something large can.
