First beneficial training video with border collie! Great job

I would ask my BC if he wanted to go for a walk, and he would go get his leash and bring it to me. He hated the leash as a puppy, but taught himself to sit at my side whenever I stopped. The whole neighborhood loved Ol' Clarence!

Awesome Video Janet, nice idea of good snack and ok snacks, and not when hungry.
@TheDogVlog4 жыл бұрын
Yes, some snacks are definitely more motivating than others! And yes, being a little hungry helps. It's great to use their meals for training when possible - they have to eat anyway. Why not make it fun and useful? :)

I have a rescue Collie from Romania (im from the UK). Been looking for ways to get her walking and behaving nicely. She's 9 months old but so excited and pulls too much when out walking. Will try this method. Thanks :)

Good luck with her! Adolescent dogs challenge us to be better trainers. :D I have one too but he's a year and a half old now.

my kelpie dogs leash is so loose it's non existent, he has been off lead since he was a young dog, i am lucky we cross busy roads together without a leash, i doubt my next dog will be off leash so much, which is all the time, it works out well i walk and he sniffs and pisses and keeps up, or i keep up with him ???

Love your videos! Keep it up! How long is your long lead?
@TheDogVlog4 жыл бұрын
So glad you like the videos! The long lead is about 31 feet, but you could use one that was around 20 ft or even less depending on the space you have. This is an extra long one made by a company in Hungary called Bende.

Ooo- hey thanks about the tip not to get too hyper if your dog is getting overstimulated. Can you clarify why you don't want to do that when teaching this exercise? I feel like it makes sense but I'm not totally sure...... thanks in advance!! Such lovely dogs! 💗

It depends on the dog. If your dog starts to get wild i.e. jumping on you or leaping around, then speaking quickly and excitedly might send them into a frenzy. But other dogs that are laid back or lower energy might enjoy a more excited tone. So just pay attention to your dog and use the type of tone that works best for them. :)

Your video is really helpful to me. 😘 I have been raising a bordercolie for 5 months. I have a question🤔 When he meets another dog, he lies flat(crawling) and waits wagging his tail . Can you tell me why he does this?🐶
@TheDogVlog4 жыл бұрын
It sounds like he may be uncertain about the new dog. When dogs lay flat they show another dog that they aren't threatening. I fostered puppies who did this with my adult dogs. The adult dogs were pretty scary from their tiny viewpoint. :) There are games that can help your dog build confidence over time. Also, if it's becoming a problem and your dog can't stop focusing on the new dog, you can work on disengagement games. The last video I uploaded about border collie overexcitement talks about this a bit. Good luck with your pup!

Also... at the end you mention using a harness for this. We're working on LLW right now and what I've been doing is using a harness with my dog when she can pull and explore and be kinda crazy. Then I put the collar on when we do the LLW exercises. I keep the collar super loose but I use it for practicing our LLW to help her differentiate what activity we're doing. Yikes- have I done anything bad here? Would love any feedback from you on this as well IF you have time!! Again, thanks!! 😊

It's not wrong. I just prefer the front and back clip harness so that I have more control and it's a little safer. When I do a "sniffy" walk (less structured), I use a longer line and I attach the clip at the back, but I only do this in low distraction settings. (The right kind of) harness is just safer for the dog's neck. I have a video about harnesses that you might want to watch: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b6TFo2NplL6qg6M

I actually don’t want to throw food because I don’t want my pup to learn to eat from the floor/street…
@TheDogVlog2 жыл бұрын
You can teach a command like "get it". There are lots of impulse control exercises you can do for this. Susan Garrett has great techniques for this.
