My mom had a early 70’s speed queen it had the solid stainless steel tub built like a tank now you do good to get three years out of a washer

That is an excellent and durable washing machine, my dad used to sell these, the transmission ! in store we had a cut view demo showing the inside of the transmission and I remember they were advertising a 25 years waranty on the transmission, these were very good, my dad was buying by 48 footer truck load and cost was $50 each in the 70s, I owned a second hand coin operated commercial Speed Queen set with stainless tub . But silly me when I got married I abandoned it for a more modern cheap made set. I wish I could go back in time I'de buy one of those with my eyes close. Oh and I thank you for sharing, I just noted these were made by McGraw Edisson just like my little Speed Queen Wringer Washer.

Cool old washer. I am kinda hiding this, but the LG 3900 has hit the beginning of the Black Friday pricing. It is at HD for $798 now. Time to make my move maybe?? I have been nursing along a Kitchenaide which is a fantastic washer. But I want to get into the lower water. At my nephews condo building the water bill is just under $300,000. So I figure a big part of our water bill at the house must be the washer. They had it for $799 for July 4, but only down to $899 (from $999) on Labor Day sale. Eugene told me to wait till Black Friday and I did and got rewarded for it :) Thanks Eugene, thumbs up :)

I'd like to see a 1970s Frigidaire Jetcone Automatic Washing Machine... Back in the day those washers had a great reputation. I believe they were still made sure g the early 1980s too.. When I was a kid my neighbors mother had one.. I liked watching the Jetcone agitator go up and down. It really moved the clothes...

OMG! I absolutely LOVE these vintage washing machines! These were built during an era when QUALITY was MANDATORY. Now, just a few short decades later, quality has officially become taboo.

Excellent VIDEO Eugene!!! What a great restored Washer... those old school top loaders that actually used water and washed your clothes the first time were and still are the best... front loaders now a days only dampen your clothes. There's not enough water to get out the dirt... and they don't get the stains put either.. I have a friend that needed a new washing machine and refused to buy an H. E. FRONT load or top load or spend the OUTRAGEOUS price... So she gave her husband a couple hundred dollars and sent him out to my a refurbished old school centerpost agitator washer and she lives it... the only washers that come close to these New, are Maytag Commercial Washing Machine and Speedqueen year 2019...

This was a budget minded model with the porcelain tub and not stainless steel. Yes very expensive design and it impractical and didn’t meet energy usage requirements that were required by 1980. Love that sound of a the real deal SQ!

antney1108 the drives were all the same. You deleted the stainless tub and some cycle choices and you two could have a SQ for less money but still have the wash power. Think of this as the Pontiac version vs the Cadillac model!

Early 1970ts Liquid came out... I believe in Europe..... Tide was introduced in 1984.....I belive.... I still use Tide Powder!

Solid tub machines aren’t as complicated as one might think, and there’s no pressure switch to go bad or really anything else to go bad. Another thing too is solid tub washers don’t use as much water since there’s no outer tub to fill and what water there is in the tub is what water there is. Someone really needs to bring back a solid tub washer since they are simple and they don’t use that much water since there’s no outer tub to fill up.

Even as a "millennial", I can see that these older solid-tubs were the REAL high-efficiency washers.

guildrich I was born in 1999 so I might be a millennial? Anyways anything newer has never really appealed to me in styling and aesthetics, and function as well and most newer cars and appliances are a fine example of that. Most modern things look nice, but it’s all style and no substance and there is little to no user feedback at all and most people say “it’s technology” but it has nothing to do with technology and has more to do with the fact manufacturers just cut costs. Most people tend to blame millennials for everything these days, but most people don’t realize that it’s the Gen X’ers who are gullible and will fall for what ever anyone says these days, and because of that, that is what just makes me more and more wise on NOT to make foolish decisions. Yeah, they don’t make anything like they used to and that pretty much goes for everything these days, and that Speed Queen solid tub washer has pretty much outlived most if not nearly all HE machines made in the past 20 years or so.

They actually have a lot of drawbacks. Timed fills are affected by different water pressures. Higher pressure will fill more than lower pressure. Metered fills will be the same regardless. Pressure switches CAN fail, but it is very rare. If anything, solid tub machines used MORE water than perforated tubs because of the overflow rinses, and said rinses were very ineffective. If you look at some videos with them, there is still a lot of suds remaining by the time it goes to spin. They were also not very good at removing sediment either. And while this was rare, if the machine stopped working with clothes and water in it? You're bailing that water out by hand, no other way to go about it. In all honesty, going back to solid tub machines would be a huge step back.

These machines did not meet new energy regulations for 1980 model year and 1979 was the last year for the solid tub McGraw Edison Speed Queens.it did use considerable amounts of water with the overflow rinse feature. These were the reversing motor SQ’s here. The originals were mode shifted via solenoid machines prior to 1975.
