Sad poem about losing a loved one, about affair he had, but doesn’t fit his personality. He wrote other similar poems, common theme of love and relationship and all of them included betrayal from thte woman, not all published, paints himself as a loving man but the woman ruins it, he is victim, ‘thy vows are all broken’. His style then shifted when he got a new wife. Knower how he wanted to be perceived by people and aware of how he was actually perceived. 1- when they spit up crying and heartbreaking the cold moment for shadows the future. 2- that morning the due stuck to his skin he hears people speak her name and is sad about what they did. 3- people are talking about her and it kills him why did he like her. 4- met in secret, grieving alone she tricked him and will feel the same if they meet again. Accentual verse. Same amount of stressed syllables per line, 2 in each line even through the amount of syllables in each line differs, 5&7 break this and contain 3. This is when he knows he no longer loves him, she started to feel cold and this reflects the shock he felt Sensory description, pointing out the relationship was about only sense and now thing more . Half broken hearted - only one or both of them part? Interpretation he was broken she was not Rhyme scheme of a sonnet at the start broken by a full stop he felt fondly of her up till this point then felt cheated and she has broken a vow. Stop to his feelings. Ambiguity to ‘vows all broken’ that they made to each other and not marriage but might be as sacred They name thee before me... knell in thine ear. held feeling s for years and is upset when hears of her affairs People around didn’t know they had slept together. Past to present then future all in one poem. Suggests the pain he feels will last forever Thou and thee - already out of fashion but he still used it reflects the sacred love as thee is used in wedding vows expresses intimacy Ends like it began, repetition circular nature, he cannot get over the love In secret we met in silence I grieve, repeating his torture and pain he feels In silence I grieve should be I grieve in silence , poetic inversion, puts emphasis on the silence, his reaction is silent even th ugh he is a poet indicating he is broken

could I say that the fact that Byron (or the speaker) valued this love affair so much like a marriage, represents why his feelings are so deep about this lover in the poem? and because he wasn't yet married, it could suggest that the fact that he seems to talk about vows with alot of his lovers in the poems, that he wanted to be part of marriage and maybe was jelous of his love affairs because they were married and he wasnt at the time? Its quite complicated and long :(

16:44 but sir, doesn’t now rhyme with brow and broken with spoken?
@mrbruff Жыл бұрын
Yes. My point is that the rhyme scheme up to the line 'thy vows are all broken' is ABABCDCDEFEF, which is the rhyme scheme of a Shakespearean sonnet. Following that form, the next two lines should rhyme (GG) but they don't. So the poem breaks from the rhyme scheme of a sonnet on the line 'thy vows are all broken'.

Hi Mr. Bruff, quick question - Will writing about context be assessed and will reference to the poet's lives or situations be of any use to me? Im getting a bit mixed up about which sections context is assessed in and how i should go about referring to it. Thanks for your help.
@arielelroy2008 жыл бұрын
They both will be assessed in different ways. Context will be assessed in assessment objective two by the examiner while the poets life will be assessed in assessment objective 3 by the examiner. You get 12 marks in total for AO2 and 10 marks in total for AO3. So you aren't confused, AO2 isnt only about context its also about work level analysis, structure and from, while AO3 is just all about wider reading which shows you have gone beyond to search about the poets life, who he was, who the poem was about and how it relates to his other poems. Hope this helped!
