In this clip from Lord Jamar's January 2017 interview with VladTV, the opinionated elder hip-hop statesman tells Vlad about how he grew up with a consistent father figure, and how that might have affected his emotional development. Lord Jamar says he had to turn to TV and books for his male role models. "Probably the father from 'Good Times,' you can look at how he moves and try to move like him." Watch above.

Jamar spitting some facts right here. This is exactly why we have so many grown men bragging about clothing brands and diamonds. I've been raised by women and I've had to look at myself and make some changes.

Young Moptop all of us have to make some changes so you’re not alone in that. When you grow up with just a man and no mother you get cold heart and then when you have kids you have to change. Because they need to be showed love and warmth. A two parent household would be the best for kids.

therock007dmx if you think men can’t feel, and won’t teach their children how to feel, that’s a prejudice you need to work through. Men raised by men teach their children that actions carry more currency than words. Sharing how sad something makes you feel or how you love another is more valuable expressed actively than verbally. It’s easy to lie with your words. Can’t lie with your actions

Lol but wait grew up with a dad and he always rocked Rolex and made sure he had TONS of alligator shoes and ostrich belts idk if he cared about brands but he definitely had his diamonds and nice watches. My dad had a damn good Job was president of a huge association ( blk born in 50’s) he wasn’t effeminate but he was bout that nice shit. Black men have always liked to stunt since forever we had so much gold in our countries. Idk I’m not sure it’s all about being feminine although my pops didn’t grow up with a dad in the house he def knew him and had an older brother who was a respected gangster. I do think it’s a little much these days but men do like their swagger n shit

Personally I think males and females suffer when there's no balance of feminine and masculine energies present in the childhood and early teens. And regardless of the direction that our society seems to be moving in, it's not "ok" and there aren't any substitutes. There are just things little girls need a mommy or mommy figure for, and there are things girls need a daddy, or a daddy figure for, and it's the same with little boys. And so when there is an imbalance, the results can be subtle, or extremely obvious. I must admit there seems to be more effeminate young men, let alone overly emotional. I have met guys with blatant feminine tendencies, and then when you take a look at their parent, they were raised by a single mom. Some ppl believe there is no correlation, but I think that's being in denial. And I'm not talking about sexual orientation. Bc you have gay men, that act like men. They are not effeminate, or flamboyant. None of that. Being gay, doesn't automatically mean a person behaves like that. So I don't mean that at all. Also you don't really see that many young men wanting to get married. They do exist, but not as much. Wanting to one day take the role as a father and husband. I think you have a lot of young men who are fathers bc it just happened, bc they had sex. There's a difference. And when you have a baby with someone who you were just sexual partners with, there's often times a disconnect. Bc the mother isn't a woman they loved, adored, or planned on spending their life with. So from jump, the family dynamic is crazy. Bc you have two ppl bound together by a child, who didn't even want all of that. And I truly believe that's why you have young men who feel disconnected from their children, bc they feel they had them with the wrong person. But the thing is, bc that's so common in our community, it seems ok. It's normal to do this. Not realizing what this perpetuates. And if it how you were raised, you could feel that you can do the same.

XxScArEcRoWxX1 I agree, but unfortunately there aren't enough men even around to lay hands on them. When I was growing up, all my father had to do was either give me the look or yell. He NEVER EVER had to lay hands on me. On the other hand, my mom did only because my father was at work. She had to put in way more of an effort than my dad ever had.

That's what I hate. I hate when people keep talking this "LEARNING HOW TO BE A MAN" stuff. First of all. Nobody can LEARN HOW TO BE A MAN. Time makes you a man. Men have to learn how to be responsible for their own actions. And that's tough for most men learn. Nobody can teach you how to be a man. But somebody can teach you how to be RESPONSIBLE. Something most young adults can't swallow.

Truthfully, men are just as emotional than women. Men teach and socialize other men to be silent and not show their emotion as much. Women are given the ok to be deeply emotional. So technically, we all have the ability to be emotional. Women aren't naturally dispossessed to be more emotional. Society has just deemed that acceptable. It's not the end of the world if a man catches feelings more often than most other men.

Fightology I feel u on that but if you're reasons for not being in your kids life are behind some gang or legal type shit then you gotta assess as a parent whether or not a child really needs that's info and knowledge about their dad. if pops went under for screwing underage girls n wants to keep that away from his son then the best way maybe to just send financial support n not.interact that much. Contrary to popular belief, kids pick up more bad habits from home than in the streets

It's true that we need fathers in the household, but I see too many emotional men out here that were raised with fathers. Our current president is probably the most emotional person I've ever seen and he was raised with his father, while the president that preceded him was probably the least emotional person I've ever seen and was raised with no father. We don't just need fathers, we need GOOD fathers and mothers. Having both parents doesn't mean anything if neither of them are good at parenting.

Fair observation. Unfortunately in the black community, it's becoming very uncommon to have a father in the house hold. And the lessons in masculinity don't really take if most of his friends are raised in homes with single moms and act emotionally. Because ultimately we're way more influenced by our peers than our parents.
@oneman5753
@oneman5753 6 жыл бұрын
THANK YOU SIR! You cannot simply say "oh put a father in it will fix everything." No. That's childish overly simplistic thinking. There are no silver bullets. If you have GOOD parents, which requires parenting SKILLS, even one will do. The problem is that requires time, attention, peace (calm stabilizing force), and a village (support outside of the individual parent). Within that context I firmly believe you can make a bunch of mistakes. Most ppl do not value those things and then be sure to self reflect and see what is wrong with themselves. That is key. Even if shit is someone else's fault, what can I do to help this type of situation in the future. Everyone wants to blame everything else except themselves.

Global Dreaming I do agree and it is sad because a lot of women's priorities and goals in life aren't in the right places. Or focusing on the right things. Men will let you do to them what you let go on but at the end of the day you need to make sure your kids are taken care of and at least taught the rights things. So many young mothers especially don't focus on their kids and it's a shame.

As much as I can't stand Lord Jamar, he's a really smart dude. He understands why certain things effect different people. I grew up without my mom but with my father but, as a man, I'm not as negatively effected by it. Or at least maybe not on the surface. And it could be said vice versa. These are the kind of things we need to understand and empathize with in order to grow as a country of many different upbringings and lifestyles.

I know exactly what he's saying. As a young teen, I would hang out with grown ass adults looking for answers, what makes you a man? How am I supposed to treat women? All we did was listen to oldies, smoke weed and drink 40's of Old English. After a few months, I remember thinking to myself "I ain't learnin shit here" so I left that crowd and I decided to teach myself and I think that was the beginning of me becoming my own man.

THANKS FOR FINALLY BRINGING THIS UP!!! What’s hurting the hispanic and black community the most is growing up without fathers in the home and not learning what it means to be a man. People are really forgetting about the psychological effects of what European slave masters executed upon the enslaved Africans for 400 years. Then post emancipation racism and crap. Black people are super strong and cool so we move our pain around. However, psychological factors affect the cohesion (or lack thereof) of the Black family. If Black people really cared, they would stop listening to music, and people that promote infidelity, and callousness. Who are we waiting for to fix the problem. As well, a lot of the females being raised by mothers are overly aggressive and rude. So what's up with that? I thought women are inherently soft and feminine😂🤣😂. Why are the men coming out overly emotional and the women overly aggressive?

Men are definately more emotional than women were just better holding it in, because we were taught from a young age that showing your emotions means sign of "weakness" like even for a man to cry meant you wasn't strong enough and I don't think men should be more in touch with their "feminine"side more than their masculine side because women need a leader and man to protect, provide them as it's our role since the beginning of everything but men should balance out their masculine and feminine out one should not out weigh the other.

But I mean, not being able to control my behavior and rationalize, etc. So I got in trouble with the law as a kid and fights and stuff. Now that I'm grown, I grew out of it luckily. I can relate to this, even though I grew up in a nuclear 2 family house, my dad was the breadwinner, mom stayed at home and worked part time remotely, but he was emotionally distant and wasn't really around much in my youth, and mostly focused on his career, so I was mostly raised by my mother and sisters, and I am very emotional and highly sensitive as a man. People do say that I act very emotional and too sensitive as a man, but in a way, I kind of like it, because most women growing up loved that I was in touch with my emotions as a man, and it''s easier for me to get along with women than men. People always joked and said that I was the ladies man, and that how I am so cool with the ladies, back in high school, university, online groups, grad school etc, and had lots of female friends.
