Fellowship of the Ring got a lot of hate at the time it was out because a lot of people can't embrace a slow and complicated burner. Trust me this is a masterpiece. Beautiful 10/10 Mind blowing

I think this is the target audience for the series: people who saw the films and loved the cinematography and the CGI, but haven't read the books and aren't bothered by the butchering of the established canon. There is a huge amount left out of the story simply because they didn't buy the rights to the Silmarillion, which is essentially the history of the time period they are covering. It is like making a series about the Civil War based on the Cliff's Notes to one historical novel. You will get names, places and some major events but mostly you just have to make stuff up as you go. They also take events that happen thousands of years apart and make them happen at the same time or out of order.
