Your take on why the left hand shake came to be is mistaken. The left hand shake , was a sign of trust. The shield is carried in the left hand, and the weapon in the right. By relinquishing your shield and leaving the weapon in the hand of the person you were shaking hands with, signified your trust of them. Apparently this is the way it was done by Africans while he was stationed there during the Boer War (1899-1902).
